What do you think would have happened to Kristine in that case? Laid off or relegated to field reporting?

It would probably only stay at 5pm and maybe catch the 8pm slot on WLNY. I'm curious what it will be like at KDKA, since their news department is strong and has a good audience.

This line stuck out to me in this story regarding Jessica Kartalija's departure from KYW (yes, it was a cost-cutting measure to release her)...

  • Apparently, the plan across all CBS-owned and operated stations is to go to single-anchor newscasts in the evenings, so in Philadelphia, it will be Ukee Washington solo at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

So if this part is true and it goes forward like this, who will solo anchor across CBS' O&Os amongst their markets and on KYW's other news (4, 5, and 8pm on WPSG)?

https://www.crossingbroad.com/2024/09/digging-up-some-details-on-jessica-kartalijas-cbs-3-departure.html

Ken Rice at KDKA has been doing the 11pm show solo for some time now after the cost-cutting moves during the pandemic that led to the departure of the sorely-missed Susan Koeppen.

But there was a lot of talk back then that going solo was their plan for the morning shows across the O&Os.  A number of morning anchors were let go in that same wave of cuts: Chris McKinnon in Boston, Erin Kennedy in Chicago, Rick Dayton in Pittsburgh: and they did that for some time in Pittsburgh with Heather Abraham anchoring solo until it was evident that a 2.5-hour morning show didn't lend itself well to one anchor.

6pm/11pm shows can work with a solo anchor -- and if they're a strong talent like Ukee or Ken, it's a no-brainer. But CBS local hasn't been the greatest judge of talent in recent years.

Doug Dunbar has solo-anchored newscasts at KTVT off/on in the past.  I haven't heard whether KTVT has solo-anchor plans for any of their other newscasts outside of their morning news.

In a In a letter to coworkers and viewers that was read on air this morning by co- anchor Brandon Walker , WWL-TV morning anchor Eric Paulsen announced he has cancer. He didn't say what type of cancer it was but said it was very aggressive and treatable. Paulsen also said he will be on medical leave for a few months and is confident he will beat it (he has been off the air since last week). He will return to on-air duties "when his hair grows back." (That is SO like Eric 😁)

Another departure in Central PA. Danielle Miller is leaving WPMT, just two weeks following the departure of Cyera Williams, who I'm assuming (since the latter said she wasn't going to be too far from the region) is likely Philly bound, but that's just my guess. As for Miller, no word yet on where she's headed.

Also, of note, this is the third departure for the Harrisburg/Lencaster/Lebanon/York, PA market in over 3 weeks, as former WGAL meteorologist T.J. Springer left for WOFL in Orlando.

This one slipped by me.

Longtime WEAR sports director Dan Shugart retired back in June.  He had been with the station since 1981.

I don't think they have a dedicated sports person anymore since Steve Nissim was let go back in 2021.  This leaves WALA and WKRG as the only stations covering sports with dedicated reporters in Mobile/Pensacola.  WKRG has two (Simone Eli & Gerhard Mathangani) and WALA has Emily Cochran, who only appears in their 10pm shows.

A hearing has been set for Wednesday in federal court in Oklahoma City as KFOR-TV and The Institute For Free Speech looks to have a restraining order filed against Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Waters and Walters' press secretary, Dan Isett. KFOR management has complained that Walters and Isett have routinely kept its reporters from attending any meetings of the state Board of Education. Instead, it says its reporters were put in an overflow room. Management also says its reporters were banned from attending press conferences held by Walters or Isset. The reason: Walters says KFOR isn't a legitimate news outlet. In addition, the plaintiffs are asking for $17.91 in damages, to commemorate the year the First Amendment was ratified... and we know what the First Amendment represents.

Lawsuit documents are on the web link.

A federal judge issued a 14-day restraining order Wednesday against Oklahoma Superintendent of Education Ryan Walter's and Board of Education spokesman Dan Isset. The board cannot ban KFOR reporters from rooms where the BOE meets, cannot ban them from press conferences and cannot physically impede their access. Isett attended the hearing and still insisted KFOR isn't a legitimate news organization in comments made after the hearing.

Please go to CBS Brian! Their evening news could use you.

CBS has been dealt a lot of blows over the past few years, but after what Brian Williams did at NBC, he's still not fit for a network newscast again.

Now when (or even if) Matt Lauer ever crawls back from the mess he created.  Sad to say, he's more credible then all of the Trump-nets put together, and that's not saying much....

Can CBS afford him with all the cuts?

Good point. CBS is paying Norah $8 million annually. Brian Williams made $6 million annually on MSNBC. Assuming they match his cable rate, CBS would be saving $2 million dollars on Brian (even more more if they go lower).

In all fairness, Maurice and John are probably the cheaper option, and previous big name hires like Katie Couric have not elevated CBS from the perpetual third place. But if even Dan Rather, one of the biggest anchors in news history couldn't elevate CBS from third, maybe that's just their lot. Everyone can't be first place. At this point their goals should be to increase the ratings, and be more competitive.

I think he would bring the leadership CBS has wanted since the Walter Cronkite days. CBS and these cuts have been an ongoing thing since the 80s.  CBS Evening News isn't

NBC or ABC which is short story form newscast because people attention spans are short. The Evening News does a good job, but CBS been third since the late 80s and still struggling in resources and etc.  You made some really good valid points and with this pending sale it seems CBS News still doesn't move the needle. It going to be business as usual. Brian would be great, and didn't CBS offered him the Evening News back several years ago?

I think folks forget CBS had tried to lure Williams to head up the evening news in the past, and, was rebuffed. Not sure anything has changed (other than more chaos at CBS with budget cuts, headcount reductions, and the pending purchase).  Plus, does Williams even want to go back to the daily grind now that he hasn't been doing that for 2 years?  I also would assume that he would want much more than his ending salary at MSNBC, and that could be an issue for CBS today, considering the current plan is a lower cost option.

Well this is sad for me to hear because I love her and I think she's an excellent anchor but...

After 8 years at WAVY-TV 10, Marielena Balouris is leaving the station, leaving the business, leaving the area, and packing her bags to join her husband (who's in the Navy) in South America.

Same for Shepard Smith. I wish Shep was anchor of The CBS Evening News.
