Does this make CBS the Eye in the Sky looking at you? 😏

(It can read your mind.)

Not with the way that Skydance produces sequels as almost half their projects.

The deal will be confirmed this week. Just pushing this ahead of the announcement.

And it still hasn't been announced. Supposedly Shari Redstone is still thinking it over, after all, she has the final say. That she hasn't indicated anything yet is enough to make one curious.

I wonder if Shari Redstone will say yes to the Skydance deal which will selloff CBS & Viacom cable networks as all that Skydance wanted was the Paramount studios only.

It kinda makes you wonder, if CBS is sold off from Paramount, who gets the TV library?  Back when CBS and the old Viacom split up, Paramount's TV library went to CBS and merged into what's still now CBS Studios.

That won't happen though. In the CNBC article that I shared, it said,

Quote

"In early May, Apollo and Sony formally expressed interest in acquiring Paramount for about $26 billion, CNBC previously reported. However, Redstone has favored a deal that would keep Paramount together, and Apollo and Sony planned to break up the company, CNBC previously reported."

In that case, Sony would have kept Paramount and the studios, while Apollo would have taken CBS - and likely would have started to sell it for parts like they have done with Cox stations, maybe even reorganizing Cox stations around CBS.

Jeff Shell, the former NBC exec who will come aboard the post-merger entity as President, has stated that “I personally think the linear business is going to be a strong business for decades to come...”

I'm surprised a large tech company did not want to make an offer like Apple?  A few years ago, rumors were thar Apple wanted to purchase Disney, which owns ABC.

Why did the Ford Motor Company not buy up horse-and-buggy dealerships of their choosing in 1924? The answer should be fairly obvious.

Because MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and Teen Nick are unsalable assets no one in their right mind would want to buy. Simple as that.

To be very blunt, Larry Ellison's money can not save this dumpster fire of a company, no matter how much his trust fund kid wants to play pretend media mogul.

Jeff Shell isn't going to sell off CBS once the merger is approved and a done deal in a few months from now.

Because the mass consolidation of the past decade eliminated the available pool of buyers for the network and owned-stations. Think about it, Nexstar is going to lose WPIX because they refuse to sell anything and Sinclair can't sell their small-market stations which have been on the block for months.

It’s easy to take a stand and not sell when no one wants what you’re peddling.

Not holding my breath that anything of actual value comes from the deal. Maybe there’s some value in the office equipment they can sell at a yard sale. Because there’s not a lot else to wring cash from.

That said, Godspeed to the employees impacted.

I feel like you're ignoring the movie and TV libraries Paramount owns - which would be the real attraction. But a Big Tech firm being interested in that would undermine a key principle of the Streaming Wars™: that content is interchangeable and ultimately disposable.

An interesting tidbit Shell said courtesy of the Wrap:  "I think if there’s going to be a change for CBS, we’re going to probably manage it a bit more aggressively for cash flow, meaning making some harder decisions on time periods and things like that going forward, which you have to when you have a declining business.”

Curious to know what is behind his time periods comment.  Content or will they do what NBC evaluated and then decided not to pursue regarding the 10pm hour?  I'm sure we will see more cheap reality crap.

They're unsalable because, with a few exceptions, they mostly show reruns, terrible reality shows, or reruns of terrible reality shows. Also, I would think most teenagers don't watch linear TV these days...

Don't forget about the digital multiplex channels such as MTV2, MTV Live, MTV Classic, etc. Surprisingly, MTV Classic actually shows music videos...but I bet more people watch those on YouTube.

Perhaps one thing I could agree with Mr. Muck is that all of the Paramount cable networks are all-rerun farms, outside of what you've mentioned.

As an example, because I watch plenty of classic reruns on days I work from home (if I'm not watching news or sports), Logo is all-day/evening marathons of either Bewitched, The Facts of Life, The Nanny, Mama's Family, Will & Grace, Three's Company, or Married...with Children; the few original programs they had in the past that are still running have since moved to either MTV or VH1 (particularly RuPaul's Drag Race).  BET Her is more or less another all-rerun channel, with repurposed content from linear BET or BET+, along with the annual simulcasts of their award shows.  BET's Jams, Hip-Hop, and Soul channels also play all-day music videos.  I don't watch any of the Nickelodeon channels or TV Land, and haven't in years.  Comedy Central, of course, still has some original content, but most of their broadcast days are all-day reruns of the same dozen or so shows, or the same couple dozen movies they currently have rights to.

Honestly, with the success of Pluto TV, they've made the Paramount cable networks rather useless, but they're still sticking around just to get retransmission dollars from the various TV providers around.  Eventually, and who knows when, several of these networks will shutter and what original content they'll still offer can move to either Pluto or Paramount+ (or whatever becomes of that platform).

I wonder how this sky dance deal eventually affects CBS NEWS & CBS News & Stations?   That will be interesting to watch.
