WXIA Tempoary set?

Recommended Posts

Tegna seems to be upgrading WXIA and WCNC. As WCNC has been staging the anchors at the video wall and side areas in the studio rather than the main anchor desk, for about 2 weeks. It may be a renovation rather than a full rebuild set. Perhaps they are changing the video monitors behind the desk with a new backdrop. And perhaps a similar upgrade at WXIA.

But for WXIA, they just had an update around two years ago, which makes me think it's a new set. Plus, the Olympics is right around the corner.

Newscast quality aside I will say Tegna stations tend to be very good looking, even in smaller markets.

The upgrade wasn't all that necessary as 11 Alive has the best set in the market (WAGA has the worst)...we'll see what they do now.

I kind of disagree. I do agree that most TEGNA station's have good sets but for some reason that has not happened with WXIA IMO and here's why, the outgoing set, technically, is over ten years old! The set premiered in 2013 with the USA Today graphics, and honestly, even though most on this forum were not fans of that look, I really liked it.

Then in 2018 I think it was, the set was updated and got the TEGNA treatment of woods and bricks, carrying the same structure but swapped out, but on this set in particular, that look has always just looked off to me. (Examples of swaps, the bright lighting was replaced with dark lighting, black floor with wood floor, white column with decent sized glass logo replaced with brick wall with giant metal logo.)

Side note: Pre covid, they used lots of shots of the newsroom, for those that don't know, the newsroom and set are in the same large space, and honestly, in hindsight, I really liked those.

Then in 2022, the set was updated again, ditching the newsroom view all together. The area that was originally just a faded duratran in 2013 that became a series of panels in 2018 became home base and other pieces of the set were moved around.

I definitely think their previous lower thirds were better than what they have now. More shine gloss and not too flat. Their current graphics arent bad though.

I'd still say 11 Alive's current set tops WAGA's overwhelming blue look. The WSB wood set looks a little outdated. I wish the skyline took up their entire background framing. WANF's set is not the worst or best...the overly fluorescent lighting cheapens their look though.

Here's a look at the new intro and how WXIA is using the updated TEGNA graphics, interesting cut of C-Clarity being used, I honestly wonder they are getting another cut, or does anyone already know of this cut?

Also, from my contacts at the station, the new set will debut tomorrow, not sure when but when the set updates debuted a few years back, they revealed it in the morning.

Is WXIA leaving behind the red/orange graphics??? (I will never call it 11Alive)

Looks like it, all the intros, for all hours, are using TEGNA blue, the bug is now blue, and red is only being used for Breaking News. Honestly a shame in a market dominated by blue graphics, now WANF will be the only station using red as it's colors.

WCNC Charlotte also debuted their renovated set today at noon. Main change was adding a new large video wall as the main backdrop behind the desk, replacing several monitor panels stacked vertically. Nice improvement, but the side video monitor wall and weather center remain the same. Overall a generic Tegna look similar to WXIA, but a nice upgrade.

It’s not a bad set. But I think the previous set had more depth and character. The new set looks pretty flat.

Exactly. The old set had a brick texture and a loft apartment-style staircase giving it it depth.  It looks cramped. The new set is not bad though, definitely ahead of WAGA and WANF.

Big fan of that cut of C-Clarity and hope it's part of a refreshed music package. Also a big fan of that new open. Looks like the TANK has really stepped up its animation game.

Wasn't their last cut of music a custom piece? I never heard it on another Tegna station....may be the same with this one. The open music sounds like Al Jazeera to start and the sting sounds similar to the Tegna elections theme. Not really liking the tease bed though. I wonder if there is a longer or alternate cut? I know a lot of the newer additional themes Sixième Son made for Tegna are just a bunch of mini loops strung together to make a 1-2 minute track, sometimes resulting in a disjointed theme.

I do like the graphics in the open. It's obviously designed with their logo in mind, so I don't think it would translate as well to other stations.
