1. The other cuts are definitely 615, but I question whether that open is--sounds more like Chris Crane put his spin on it (I hear a WHDH style synth hit in there), which would be even more exciting if so.
2. Huh. I didn't think WFMZ's set was all that dated. All they really needed to do was update the RPs in the back. I hope the new set is more than just another monitor wall. My guess is the graphics get updated in September too.
3. *Cough* WGN America isn't going to exist in a year, is it?
4. In all fairness to Sinclair, a 0.8 rating at midnight on a Sunday in a sleeper market is nothing to sneeze at--and the numbers it's getting in Vegas and Austin, of all places, are quite good.
5. So...um...WHAG is bringing back the WDVM calls to the DC market...
6. Unless the creative in the set mockup is just that--a mockup--it definitely looks like they're doubling down on the cylinder design they have now and evolving it. From what few shots there are of the set, it looks like a mesh between KTRK and WFLD.
7. Remember in the Sinclair / Tribune merger thread a few weeks back where I lamented 3rd party vendors stand to lose a lot if the merger goes through? This could break Nielsen. I'm serious.
8. Since nobody can read the fine print under the bug, that's a 25-54 demo win. I'd be curious to know the margin of victory. Someone jog my memory--when Mendte/Chenault beat 6 that one other time in the 2000s at 11, was it in HHs or demo? Or both?
9. The weird thing about those opens is that the photography in all of them is beautiful. Like, major market beautiful. They could have worked around the graphic shortfalls by making all their opens in the vein of the Today one and it'd have been fine. I don't get it.
10. I think other FOX stations with 90 minutes of news at night would do well to adopt this format. They could even highlight college and high school sports to fill the time.
11. One small thing... The clip in question was from MONDAY. And nobody cared until it went viral on Tuesday morning. Had FTVLive not posted it, I bet he'd have been fine.
12. First, that limit probably dies under a Trump administration and a Republican controlled FCC. Give it time. Second, EVERYONE will feel it. Trump has proven you don't have to spend money on TV ads to become President of the United States. Political spending as we know it is about to change and I've long felt local TV is too dependent on it. I hope all Sinclair is doing is future-proofing itself, because with all the stations they have in swing states, if they can't balance the books, who can?
13. Honestly, for some mets...yes. That would be a step up. Especially if it were WWL. Literally anywhere else in NOLA...probably not. Guess it depends on what floats your boat--tornadoes and hurricanes vs. blizzards and extreme cold in the winter! I also think that, for better or worse, a lot of viewers in Philly (and Tampa, where she was before, for that matter) focused on Sheena's...style, rather than substance. DC doesn't work like that. This is a chance to show off her forecasting skills and not be ogled on TV. Doug Kammerer, who I imagine also fit into that "style over substance" category in Philly, did the same move, and it's worked out just fine for him.
14. WRC is the top station in DC by a MILE. It's not a demotion.
15. I wonder if In-Sink V1 got an "Update" before V2 was commissioned--though the question then is whether it was ever folded into the proper syndicated package...
16. I'm in the crowd that appreciates the *idea* of Good Question, but I think the execution was more often than not too fluffy.
17. I definitely just saw a :05 ID running during Late Late that looks like nothing corporate at all (not even a CBS eye or the proper 3 if I recall) with the VO "Thanks for watching Channel 3." It felt very CCO--but bolder. Thought I'd put that out there.
18. Early Today is on right now instead of the 4AM news--first time in a while that I can remember 10 running Early Today. Eeesh.
19. If you think about lead-ins, the fact the 10PM news on 29 has been around for decades, etc., that should be happening anyway--that spot is designed more to try and annoy 6 than anything. It'd be news if the 10PM on 17 was beating FOX regularly--and for a bit, there were some days where they were and it was competitive. It'd also be news if the 10PM news on FOX was the market's #1 late news or close to it, or if GDP were making inroads again in the morning. There hasn't been any newspaper coverage on how May sweeps were for Philly. I guess it's safe to assume the status quo?
20. The simple answer: They were all probably just told to up their social media engagement. I'm not sure anyone's properly unlocked the potential of turning social engagement to eyeballs on the TV. If anyone in this market can do that, it's them.
