I agree with this. I guess it looks "cool" but it gets stale pretty quickly. In fact, I think it gets in the way of showing the weather. Where we used to have weather maps and graphics taken full screen, they now exist on only a portion of the screen. I don't care if it "looks bigger" because the talent is tiny in comparison, if it takes up less of my TV screen at home it's smaller and harder to see. Instead of seeing the maps, we see fake walls that add nothing. And having the weather talent in a different room than the news anchors just makes everything feel less friendly. 

 

I guess it's interesting for viewers to look at, but it's distracting and takes away from presenting information.

Yup, same. When news of his death was announced, I just knew this was going to be the reason. I hope the other KCAL dudes on Grindr are careful. 

The LA County Medical Examiner says Chauncy Glover died of "acute intoxication by the combined effects of chloroethane and methamphetamine. The manner of death is accident.” More from ABC 7.

Oh cool, I’ll have to check it out. I always wondered why markets 1 and 3 have talent opens but not LA. 
 

Separately, I caught the end of the 5:00pm show today and the two shot of the anchors was actually split and Marc Brown was in a different studio. I know COVID numbers are spiking in SoCal - are we back to this for a bit? Have all shows been doing this? 

I would argue the brand has been successful for 34 years which is why they decided not to use CBS News Los Angeles on channel 9 where a bulk of the newscasts are aired. Even when the two stations became a duopoly, it was KCAL’s management that ran the combined operation. 

Jeff Vaughn wasn’t anything special. When he first got to town, he couldn’t pronounce city and street names correctly which was instantly annoying and why a local should’ve been an anchor. His delivery is flat and boring; he has zero personality and IMO, better suited for news radio, especially with his deep voice. Those annoyances coupled with Suzie Suh always shaking her head in the affirmative at every damn thing, turned me off real quick. In fact, I remember being annoyed CBS dumped Jeff Michael in favor of Jeff Vaughn, but figured JM had the higher salary, which I assume is true now, Vaughn had a higher salary than Chauncey Glover, who, again, IMO, is equally unwatchable, starting off the newscast “hello friends.”  Creeper.

Mary Yoon at KTLA? please!   She has ZERO personality.  She’d be a better fit with the FAA or an airline meteorologist. 

KABC does this during the 11am show sometimes; I find it annoying because this is market 2. Yes it’s actually raining rn, but how much can the weather change over the course of a couple hours? If we were in Chicago where the weather really does change and alerts need to be issued, the taped forecast would be unbelievable. Hopefully KTLA has a live report tonight.

That part! They might as well call the 10pm news The Mike Rodgers Show.  He kept popping up with the most annoying updates; we don’t need to know every time a tree topples over in LA. At a minimum they should have a breaking news anchor. This guy Mike doesn’t appear to be a trained broadcaster nor educated as a journalist; his grammar was the worst. To someone’s point above, this is LA, not Podunck, Iowa.
