WPRI is now broadcasting news in HD as of the 5pm news today!

The new set looks amazing. They are using the same on-screen graphics, but using them in their intended HD.

The broadcast looks far superior to WLNE and to WJAR.

They, however, are having a lot of technical issues in their first broadcast.

The cameras look like they are now robotic, and are doing some funky things (such as turning around to a new camera position mid-story).

They are also HD in the field (with the exception of live shots).

I think I prefer WJAR's set still. WPRI's looks sharp, but feels kind of small. WJAR's has a much bigger look to it.

The newscast is also a technical disaster. They've had so many mess ups - some of them big. The camera just did a 360 away from a reporter doing a standup to an empty weather center shot. They also had 15-20 seconds of black between a report and the start of weather. It's pretty bad.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - WPRI/WNAC TV is proud to announce that all Eyewitness Newscasts can now be seen in high definition (HD).

On Tuesday, September 20, 2011, WPRI/WNAC brought viewers to the next generation of television broadcasting, high definition. For its news broadcasts, the station invested in a new set, studio and field cameras, editing equipment, and studio control room.

“WPRI/WNAC were the first stations in the Providence/New Bedford market to broadcast syndicated, network, and locally produced programs in beautiful high definition,” says Jay Howell, President and General Manager of WPRI/WNAC/ENAC. ” The significant investment, by LIN Media, to broadcast local news in high definition is part of our continuing commitment to best serve the local community. Broadcasting Eyewitness News in HD means the viewers will see sharper pictures and get the clearest audio, both from the field and the studio.”

In addition to the news, the Eyewitness News Pinpoint Weather team will be using new high definition maps and graphics for forecasting and tracking storms. These enhancements will help viewers get the most accurate day to day weather as well as during times of severe weather.

“Our viewers count on us for the best coverage of local news and weather. Now by going HD, we can provide viewers the best picture and sound quality,” says Eyewitness News Director Joe Abouzeid.

The new Eyewitness News set was built by FX. The station is using Avid Interplay to edit and Sony XD Cams to shoot. Additional production systems include the Avid iNews computer system, Avid Deko graphics software, Grass Valley Ignite Connect switcher and the Wheatstone D8 audio console.

So those are flat-panel, thin-bezel monitors behind the anchor desk there...that's cool! Set design companies really have a great idea going with these, as they really help establish clean, crisp solutions for backdrop scenery.
