KDKA has The Sunday Sports Showdown, Pittburgh Today Live (if that counts as non-news, it's more discussion/interview focused,) The Sunday Business Page and The Lynne Hayes Freeland Show, plus Hometown HighQ, a heavily-sponsored quiz show.

WPXI has Our Region's Business, Black Impact (well, it's just Impact now, I guess) and Talking Pittsburgh.

WTAE has Action Sports Sunday, and former KDKA anchor Jennifer Antkowiak's new commercial show, jennifer, a wanna-be syndicate-style Martha Stewartish program (Enough semi-adjectives in that sentence?); it's actually produced at WQED-TV, the PBS station. They have other programming specials throughout the year, like Summerfest, Winterfest, Project Bundleup and Healthy4Life... I don't really bother with four lately, so I'm sure I'm missing some regularly-scheduled community programming.

WFAA also produces a weekly show entitled, "Metro" on sunday nights @ 11:10 geared toward the African-American community. Great show, I try to catch it when I'm awake at that time.

WTKR

Other than that, I don't think they have any... they had a feature/talk show called "Live at 9" for a few years in the 90s

They also air a program through Sentara hospitals. I believe it's actually taped at WHRO's (PBS affil.) studio.

Pitiful...

Our PBS affiliate, WKNO, does produce a lot of fine programming, such as:

Southern Roads-profiles local people and locations around the Mid South

Real People-Charlie Rose knockoff (but the interviewer, Bill Waters, does not interupt the guests nearly as much as Rose does)

Hello Mr. Chuck-Children's program which has won a few national awards

Real Medicine-Medical show that features many former Memphis TV people including Kim Hindrew, Rod Starns and Lurene (Cachola) Kelley

Memphis Memoirs series-Highly popular documentary series that profiles certain periods of Memphis history

It Matters-Seasonal public forum type program

WKNO also produces various special presentations and documentaries throughout the year.

But as far as commercial TV in Memphis, WMC used to have 2 public affairs shows: "Overview" aired at 6:30pm Saturdays and "Face To Face" aired at 10am on Sundays.

Pitiful...

Actually, WREG still does "Mid-South Outdoors" and I know they at least used to have a home and garden show that ran on Saturday Mornings immediately following their Sat. Daybreak newscast - it was actually hosted by former WHBQ anchor Tonya St. Romain in recent years. I'm not sure if WREG's "Live at 9" would fall into this category. They do news-oriented interviews on occasion, but mainly its entertainment and variety. WMC runs those "Definitely Downtown" shows and have just recently started "Tunica This Week", but I'm not sure if those are produced by WMC or not. WLMT has "Memphis Wrestling" on Saturday Evenings, and I'm not sure if its still around but the Clear Channel Duopoly used to have a Teen-oriented show called "We Are Tomorrow. RU?" for several years. WPXX (the My/ION affiliate) also runs a monthly special produced by the local utility company in town.

Since others are noting such instances, all of the stations do specials for seasonal or annual events. The stations do the High School Specials during the Fall Football season and WPTY does the Memphis Tigers Coach's shows for Basketball and Football season. WREG and WMC used to have Sunday Sports Specials but both were canceled in the last few years. WHBQ has "Smoke on the Water" during the Memphis in May BBQ contest. WMC has been off-and-on with their "Countdown on Beale" New Year's Eve show in recent years, it didn't air last year and have no idea if it may be gone for good this time.

WKNO, the PBS affiliate, is really where all the good local non-news programming is now.

Thanx, Jterry. I have no idea where my mind is today (too much beer and BBQ, perhaps? ;))

"Tunica This Week" is produced by a Memphis company called Empire Media. It airs in a lot of markets, including Memphis, Nashville, Greenville MS, Chattanooga and Monroe, LA.

:D The Beer and BBQ might do it to ya ;) Didn't know that about "Tunica This Week" though. I haven't even caught a showing of it, just saw a commercial a few weeks ago.

You did handle all of the WKNO programs well. I've always enjoyed the Memphis Memoirs programs, always very well done IMO, and they did one on the local TV history back in 2004. "Real Medicine" is always good just to see some of the former Memphis TV personalities.

The public affairs shows just aren't around in Memphis anymore for some reason. The most recent I remember was "Impact" on WPTY, hosted by local radio personality Mike Fleming, which ended several years ago.
