WBNS Video Vault: 1963 Ohio Penitentiary Documentary

Found this cool clip from the WBNS website. Was impressed with the quality, the writing, the narration and the style. I only watched the ffirst and last few minutes, but this looked to me like network quality stuff. The closing credits were the best.

I know society is too dumb these days to appreciate something like this, but it just oozed quality and talent.

If they did a lot of stuff like this back in the golden days, I can see why WBNS had such a great reputation.

Today? Not so much. Just another TV station.

The voice is that of Bill Pepper.

Great, way to stereotype society....

Well, they didn't have to upload that on their site, you know. When it comes to their past, WBNS has done a stellar job embracing it. Most stations, if they even have something like this in their archives, couldn't care less about it.

I do agree with you though. That was well written and produced and very informative.

It's a combination of several things. First, TV is no longer the shiny new technology anymore. Except for C-Span and PBS, I don't think TV holds people's attention through something like this. Also, we have a more jaded public these days. I doubt what was in that video would phase anybody today, whereas the 1960's was a coming of age for civil rights. Finally, let's face it. Local TV doesn't have enough critical mass anymore - they probably can't afford to do something like this.

What caught my eye was some of the camerawork in that video. You don't see shots like some of the shots they used in the beginning these days. I think there might be a lesson here to be learned by local news operations.

But then again, it was on film. I don't care what people say about HD, there is nothing like film in my opinion.
