2015 MLS Season

I'm a little over a week late. But, the start of the 2015 MLS regular season under way. And, I figured since the "2014 NFL Regular Season" thread seemed to be well received why not start one for the 2015 MLS regular season.

With the new year come the start of the new broadcasting agreements in the US and several international markets between the league and their broadcast partners. The major one(s) being the new 8 year deal(s) between Univision, Fox, ESPN and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) that are reportedly valued at a combined $90 Million annually. The MLS gains two new expansion teams this year, New York City FC and Orlando City SC. But, The MLS lost one team with the league folding Chivas USA leaving the league with an even 20 teams. However, a replacement expansion club will take the pitch in LA, along with an Atlanta club, in 2017.

Of course, with the new deals come changes. Here are some of the changes and/or "highlights" related to MLS broadcasting headed into the 2015 regular season:

Viernes de Futbol (Univision):

  • Looking to create consistent national broadcast times/windows the league established a Friday Night Soccer franchise on the Univision family of networks.
  • This is the first time a Spanish-language television network will have its own exclusive night with a major professional sports league based in the United States.
  • Univision will broadcast a minimum of 34 games per season, Primarily on UniMas.
  • Kickoff times are based on the home teams time zone. But, primarily kickoff at 7pm ET or 11pm ET.
  • Univision does not have a match scheduled for broadcast on the following 6 Fridays:March 27th
  • June 12th
  • July 31st
  • September 4th
  • October 9th
  • October 23rd

[*]As a result Univision will broadcast an additional match on 5 Friday nights plus the 2 "Decision Day" matches:

  • April 24th @ 10:00pm ET (on UDN).
  • May 1st @ 10:00pm ET (on UDN).
  • May 8th @ 10:00pm ET (on UDN).
  • May 15th @ 9:00pm ET (on UDN).
  • July 3rd @ 11:00pm ET (on UniMas).
  • October 25th @ 5:00pm ET (on UniMas) - "Decision Day".
  • October 25th @ 7:00pm ET (on UniMas) - "Decision Day".

[*]The following Univision matches have been postponed:

  • Friday, March 20th @ 7:00pm ET (on UniMas) moved to Saturday, March 21st @ 4:00pm ET (on UDN) - Inclement Weather

[*]All Univision Matches (except the MLS All-Star Game & MLS Cup Final) will be available in English via SAP.

[*]It appears as though all matches televised on UniMas will also be simulcast on Univision Deportes Network.

[*]Breakdown of regular season matches on the Univision family of networks:

  • UniMas: 24 Matches
  • Univision Deportes Network: 11 Matches (+simulcasts w/ UniMas matches)

[*]NOTE: In markets without a UniMas OTA affiliate the local clubs will be allowed to broadcast the games "in market" via their local partners. For example, Sporting KC's three games on UniMas (5/29, 7/24 & 9/18) will also be available on KMCI.

MLS Soccer Sunday (ESPN/Fox):

  • Looking to establish another consistent national broadcast time(s)/window(s) the league established a Sunday "doubleheader" franchise with ESPN and Fox.
  • Due to scheduling there will be five Sundays (6/24, 7/6, 7/12, 7/19 & 9/6) with only a single game.

ESPN

  • ESPN will broadcast a minimum of 34 games per season, Primarily on ESPN2.
  • Kickoff times for ESPN broadcasts are primarily at 5pm ET. There is one exception:August 9th @ 4:00pm ET (on ESPN)

[*]ESPN does not have a match scheduled for broadcast on the following 4 Sundays:

  • May 24th
  • June 14th
  • September 6th
  • October 11th

[*]As a result ESPN will broadcast a match on the following 3 Wednesdays and 1 TBD:

  • May 13th @ 8:00pm ET (on ESPN2).
  • May 20th @ 8:00pm ET (on ESPN2).
  • June 26th @11:00pm ET (on ESPN2).

[*]Breakdown of regular season matches on the ESPN family of networks:

  • ESPN2: 31 Matches
  • ESPN: 1 Match
  • ESPNEWS: 1 Match
  • TBD: 1 Match (ESPN still has one match to pick up)
  • ESPN Deportes: 34 Matches

FOX

  • Fox will broadcast a minimum of 34 games per season, Primarily on Fox Sports 1.
  • Kickoff times for Fox broadcasts are primarily at 7pm ET. There are two exceptions:June 21th @ 10:00pm ET (on FS1).
  • July 26th @ 2:30pm ET (on FS1).

[*]Fox does not have a match scheduled for broadcast on the following 5 Sundays:

  • July 5th
  • July 12th
  • July 19th
  • August 23rd
  • October 11th

[*]As a result Fox will broadcast an additional match on 4 Sundays:

  • March 8th @ 9:30pm ET (on FS1). Creates a "Tripleheader" with ESPN's match that same night.
  • April 26th @ 9:30pm ET (on FS1). Creates a "Tripleheader" with ESPN's match that same night.
  • May 24th @ 5:00pm ET (on FS1). ESPN does not have a match this Sunday.
  • October 4th @ 9:30pm ET (on FS1). Creates a "Tripleheader" with ESPN's match that same night.

[*]Breakdown of regular season matches on the Fox family of networks:

  • Fox Sports 1: 33 Matches
  • TBD: 1 Match (Fox still has one match to pick up)
  • Fox Deportes: 34 Matches

Scheduling Initiatives:

  • As a result of Fridays and Sundays being reserved for the national broadcast partners Saturdays are now reserved for the MLS clubs. This gives the clubs and their local broadcast partners an exclusive day. And, providing the clubs additional flexibility in scheduling. Hopefully, improving the local TV deals and the gate in the process.
  • MLS will also showcase league rivalries over two weekends with "MLS Rivalry Week" taking place the weekends of June 26-28 and Aug. 28-30
  • For the first time ever MLS will use "flex scheduling". In the next-to-last week of the season Univision, Fox and ESPN will be able to select the match of their choosing from the slate that weekend.
  • Borrowing from the English Premier League the MLS unveiled it's "decision day" format. On the last weekend of the year all games will be played on Sunday October 25th:
  • All Eastern Conference matches will all kickoff at 5pm ET. Two games will air nationally, one on Fox Sports 1 and one on UniMas.
  • All Western Conference matches will kickoff at 7pm ET. Two games will air nationally, one on ESPN2 and one on UniMas.

Postseason:

  • With the expansion of the league the MLS Cup Playoffs will also expand from 10 teams to 12 teams.
  • There are now four single elimination "Knockout Round" matchups (3 v. 6, 4 v. 5) that will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 28 and Thursday, Oct. 29.
  • The Conference Semifinals and Conference Finals will continue with all matches played in a two-leg, home-and-away aggregate-goal format. Each round will take place over two consecutive weekends.
  • Each broadcaster will televise the following MLS Cup Playoff matches under the new deals:Univision: Two "Knockout Round" matches (Spanish/English) and the MLS Cup Final (Spanish only)
  • FOX: Half of the remaining MLS Cup Playoff matches outside of the two Univision games(English/Spanish) and the MLS Cup Final starting next year alternating each year with ESPN (English only).
  • ESPN: Half of the remaining MLS Cup Playoff matches outside of the two Univision games(English/Spanish) and the MLS Cup Final starting this year alternating each year with FOX (English only)

[*]Also, as part of their deal(s) Univision will televise the MLS All-Star Game (Spanish Only) for the duration of the agreement. And, Fox will televise the MLS All-Star Game starting this year (English Only) alternating each year with ESPN.

En Espanol:

  • ESPN Deportes will broadcast a Spanish Language version of all ESPN matches (except the MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup Final).
  • Fox Deportes will broadcast a Spanish Language version of all Fox matches (except the MLS All-Star Game and MLS Cup Final).
  • These clubs also have local Spanish Langunge telecasts:
  • Houston Dynamo: KTMD (47.2)
  • Los Angeles Galaxy : TWC Deportes
  • Portland Timbers: KGW (8.3)
  • Seattle Sounders: KOMO (4.2)

In Canada:

  • TSN will continue as the exclusive English Language national broadcaster though next season televising 33 national matches.
  • TSN is also the regional broadcaster for all Vancouver Whitecaps FC regional games and half of Toronto FC's regional games. Although, these are de-facto "national" as to the best of my knowledge they are available nationwide.
  • Sportsnet is the regional broadcaster for the other half Toronto FC's regional games. Like TSN's regional telecasts these are de-facto "national" broadcasts as well with most matches airing on Sportsnet 360.
  • RDS will continue as the exclusive French Language national broadcaster next season televising 33 matches.
  • TVA Sports is the regional (French Language) broadcaster for all Montreal Impact FC regional games. Again, like TSN/Sportsnet regional games these are de-facto "national" games.

Streaming Options:

  • All the broadcasters were granted digital rights as part of their new deals.
  • ESPN obtained out-of-market rights to the MLS clubs local telecasts as part of the overall deal between ESPN & SUM. These matches were to be made available via ESPN3 and via planned OTT subscription package from ESPN. However, these plans have shelved for this season with MLS Live and MLS Direct Kick returning for the 2015 season.
  • The TV Everywhere applications require authentication through a participating provider and a subscription to the channel.
  • ESPN Deportes and Fox Deportes feeds will be available via WatchESPN and Fox Sports Go, respectively. Likewise, Univision will provide an English option via SAP. All follow the normal TV Everywhere process.
  • So, as at least as I understand it here is a quick breakdown of Streaming/Mobile rights:

So there you have it. If you haven't checked out the MLS, give it a look it will be much easier to do. I'm pretty pumped up about this new MLS national deal. And, as a personal aside I'm even more pumped up Minnesota will very likely join the MLS fold in the next few years...and even more excited that in all likelihood the club won't be housed in the new Vikings Stadium (or, be run by the Vikings ownership.) I'll try to edit this post with any changes or additional relevant info as the season goes on. So, what do you think? What are your thoughts on each broadcaster's presentation?

EDIT: (3/22/15) - Updated to reflect changes in this post.

A few updates to note:

To avoid possible conflicts with 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, 2 matches previously scheduled to be televised by Fox have been changed:

Orlando City SC announced another television deal. This time announcing a multi-year deal with Fox Sports Florida/Sun Sports to televise matches throughout the state. Matches on Fox Sports Florida/Sun Sports will also be available "in-market" on Fox Sports Go. And, will also be available in Spanish via SAP. This deal is in addition to their previously announced multi-year deal with WOFL/WRBW.

Lastly, the Friday, March 20th FC Dallas @ Philadelpha Union match originally scheduled to be televised by UniMas (and simulcast on UDN) was postponed due to inclement weather. It was rescheduled for Saturday, March 21st and televised on exclusively on Univision Deportes Network.

  • 4 weeks later...

Not MLS, but I'm excited about the CONCACAF Champions League final. MLS is represented by Montreal Impact. I'm a Sounders fan, but will root for any and all MLS teams in the CCL. Gonna be a very tough go against Club America, of Mexico. But stranger things have happened.

As far as zMLS goes, I sure hope Seattle picks up some steam. They aren't in playoff form yet. But it's way, way early.
