WTVT reporter fired

06/27/07 - Our friends at NewsBlues.com report that longtime WTVT investigative/general reporter Glenn Selig was let go yesterday. Apparently someone tipped off management that he was running a website, where he notes his on-air credentials and will help clients put out an effective press release (for a small fee). The website (http://www.pressreleasepros.com) charges $239 and up for releases. Selig was a twelve year veteran at the Tampa station.

 

NOTE: The website above is not his only venture into the web. He has been writing a blog for sometime now. http://pressreleasepros.blogspot.com/

 

Serious conflict-of-interest problem there and a good move by Ch. 13 to fire him.

These organizations cannot always be trusted. Many of them are not even licensed businesses and can rip-off people. My advice is to do so research, gather facts, and ask questions (sound journalist) before considering them. Personal Testimonials, awards, and news pieces are the key things here.

I don't think it's the reputablity of his company that's the issue here, it's the blatantly obvious conflict-of-interest problem.

 

Obviously Mr. Selig has no knowledge of journalistic ethics. Having ANY side job as a journalist seems like pretty risky business (when it comes to possible conflict of interest), but having a press release company is pretty fishy.

This was a similar mentality which FLA used to say its reporters or anchors could not wear flag buttons or USA jewelry in case they had to do a negative story on the govt. It is a pile of crap.

 

Can a reporter have a side gig without losing credibility? Possibly, if the side has no connection to media or his/her FT gig and if asked to cover a story about something which may conflict, s/he needs to recuse him/herself.

 

In Selig's case the above was a conflict.
