Former WCMH reporter dies

"COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Members of Michael “Mike” Bowersock’s family confirmed the former NBC4 reporter and anchor died suddenly Sunday night.

 

Family members say Mike died Sunday night surrounded by loved ones. He was 56.

 

 

Mike worked at NBC4 from 1989-1994 and from 2004-2016. During his career, Mike was honored with four Emmys, five awards from The Associated Press, two from the Society of Professional Journalists, and one each from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Detroit-Windsor Metropolitan Christian Council and the Detroit Free Press. He was named the Best Street Reporter by the Free Press in 2000.

 

He said the most memorable event he covered was the Gulf War. While at WCMH, Mike and photojournalist Ronnie Clark entered Kuwait at the end of the war.

 

Mike and photographer Andy Banks were also embedded with an Ohio National Guard Unit in 2011 in Afghanistan. They produced a week of in-depth stories highlighting an Ohio unit that specialized in route clearance accompanying them on missions. (Sidenote: These stories aired during the 2011 Red, White and Boom! special.)

 

After he left Channel 4, he began working with the Ohio National Guard as a civilian public affairs officer.

 

Mike received a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from The Ohio State University. He also had an MBA in Finance.

 

He’s survived by his wife and four children. Funeral arrangements are pending."
