WSLS Refreshed Set

The reason I say "refreshed" is that it's really just been "re-covered," not overhauled by any stretch of the imagination. The desk remains the same, but the background is now highlighted by giant screens that really don't serve much purpose. I suppose this was to get HD-ready, which I think starts in August. Pictures attached.

An improvement over what it looked like before:

(I know that's your cap... just for those who haven't seen it before)

How is the transition to "WSLS 10 On Your Side" and are they using the open that WJBF and WNCT are using (

)?

No, they still have the same bland open, featuring "Newschannel 10." For now, "WSLS 10 On Your Side" is mainly vocally spoken by the talent, although it's made its way onto maybe half of the graphical elements.

Wow - WSLS has finally gotten out of the early Nineties and moved into the...late Nineties.

At least it's an improvement.

VARTV reports that this is a temporary set, and they're actually doing it from the newsroom. It's pretty sad when your temp. set looks better than the one you're replacing.

:// HD newscasts in Roanoke

(Media General-owned) "NewsChannel 10" WSLS (NBC) Roanoke viewers may have noticed something a little different this past week. The station's newscasts are temporarily broadcasting from WSLS' newsroom while the main studio undergoes a transformation.

Crews are tearing apart the current set, in use since January 1999, and are gutting the entire studio. A brand new set will be installed to coincide with the planned transformation to high definition newscasts this fall. The set itself isn't the only upgrade. Technicians began converting the station's control room to HD in April.

That is pretty sad. If the temp. set looks better than the old one, maybe the new set will actually be nice. It will definetly be an improvement to that outdated 90s one.

I think this tidbit was just late being posted. They did broadcast from the newsroom for a week or two, in what amounted to two director's chairs in front of a plasma screen. From what I understand, the pictures above are the new set.

The new one is technically supposed to be a 'stopgap' set. They barely spent 10k on it - didn't even use a real set designer, just a local interior designer. The idea is that once the full HD transition comes around, theyll invest in a new set.

Yeah right...they'll use this one until 2019. Mark my words.
