Is this to lessen the likely hood of a player accidently running into them? Members of the media including the TV broadcast crew have to wear them so security can see they are permitted to be on the field. It's pretty much like wearing a credential. The vests are mainly worn by Videographers or Photographers shooting the game, not just TV cameraman. For the College Football games I work, I have a number on my vest so stadium security can verify my identity from a far.
