New anchor will head 10 p.m. newscast

By JOSEF ADALIAN

KTLA has officially tapped Emmett Miller to replace the late Hal Fishman as anchor of its 10 p.m. newscast.

Miller has been considered a candidate for the gig since September, when Carlos Amezcua -- who had been thought of as a likely Fishman successor -- jumped to rival KTTV (Daily Variety, Sept. 5). Miller has been handling the anchor duties on an interim basis since then.

More than one option

Leila Feinstein, who's been co-anchor of the 10 p.m. "Prime News," will continue in that role.

By choosing Miller, KTLA has opted for inhouse talent rather than shell out megabucks for a superstar anchor. Miller has been with the station since 1999, most recently co-anchoring the station's early morning newscasts.

Well, ever since Carlos took over, KTTV has been going in the same direction as CBS with Katie Couric. KTLA on the other hand...looks now a lot more like KCOP when Lauren Sanchez replaced Tawny Little back in 99.

I suppose the decision to add Emmet to the News At 10, or as Vinnie "The 'Cool' LA Guy from NY" Malcolm likes to call it "Prime News" serves ultimately as the last needle in the coffin of KTLA's great news tradition, knowing well that either Marta Waller who has been there for ages or Lynette Romero would be far more preferable than the fill-in weekend sportscaster-turned-anchor Feinstein.

As for Frank Buckley, I think he is better off as a reporter than an anchor. I liked him when he was reporting at KCAL and CNN, especially his coverage of the 2000 Elections. He just does not seem comfortable as a morning news anchor.

And as for John Beard, well it appears we will never see the guy again on an television set in Los Angeles, not ever. KTLA doesn't want him, FOX dumped him, ABC7 and the other duopoly has their hands full already. I say, he might as well just give it up and find something else, a better life. That's what so many others are doing.

YEP FOLKS TV IS DYING!

KTLA taps 'Morning' anchor

L.A. show names Frank Buckley co-anchor

By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER

KTLA has formally tapped Frank Buckley to serve as the new co-anchor of its signature "KTLA Morning Show" broadcast.

Buckley has been sitting in the chair since the fall, when longtime "KTLA Morning Show" (formerly "KTLA Morning News") co-anchor Carlos Amezcua first began filling in on the station's 10 p.m. newscast, then jumped to rival KTTV.

Buckley moves to the ayem shift from the weekends, where he anchored the station's Saturday and Sunday 10 p.m. newscasts. He's been with KTLA since June 2005; before that, he was an L.A.-based correspondent for CNN.

Buckley's awards include local news Emmys, reporter of the year from the Associated Press Television-Radio Assn. and the Golden Mike Award from the Radio and Television News Assn..

Michaela Pereira also co-anchors "KTLA Morning Show," while Mark Kriski handles weather and features, and Sam Rubin continues as entertainment reporter.

Buckley's announcement comes a week after KTLA also made Emmett Miller's appointment to the 10 p.m. anchor chair official (Daily Variety, Dec. 4). Miller replaced the late Hal Fishman in the post.More than one option(Co) Daily Variety
