Over the holidays I was speaking with a family member about KTVT chief meteorologist Kristine Kahanek. This family member has a friend who works with Mrs. Kahanek's husband. They spoke of a situation in which Kahanek and her husband, Jim Kjolhede, faced charges of cocaine possession. I found this very unbelievable, but unfortunately just found a story about it from D magazine.

KRISTINE KAHANEK'S HUSBAND FACES COCAINE CHARGES

On June 19, 2004, Kahanek and her husband, Jim Kjolhede, were headed to Maui when they ran into some trouble at DFW Airport. Old news, except that it isn't. His hearing on the case is just now coming around. It's set for Thursday morning, at the Frank Crowley Courts Building. Here is the full narrative from the arrest report (Photo by Doug Reeves):

Reporting officer responded to Terminal A, A-35 Skycap check-in reference to suspicious circumstances. Upon arrival officer was advised by TSA, CTX Screener Juan Lucio that when he was conducting a hand search of a passenger's suitcase, he observed a small brown glass container that had a white powder substance. The container in question was removed from a black shaving kit that was in a red suitcase.

Reporting officer obtained a name from a checked American Airlines bag tag on the red suitcase identifying the owner as Jim Kjolhede. The bag tag also indicated that the owner was to Maui, AA flight #7. Officer B. Hanlon #325 went to the gate area A-39 and had the owner, Jim Kjolhede, paged to the gate counter. Mr. Kjolhede responded and officer Hanlon escorted him to the location of the skycap check-in area.

Arresting officer asked Mr. Kjolhede if the brown glass container was his, at which time he was advised it was. Arresting officer placed the defendant under arrest and read the Miranda Warning at 1118 hrs.

The contents in the brown bottle was tested using NIK Test Kit G, Lot #07633 and tested positive for cocaine.

Unit 702 Officer Jon Thompson #541 responded and transported the defendant to Station One for book-in. The defendant's luggage was turned over to his wife.

The cocaine was weighed, tagged and bagged, and sent to Station One with an Evidence sheet.

Reached this morning at home, Kjolhede said he had someone on the other line. He has yet to return the call.

This situation upsets me and I'm really surprised it didn't create a bigger public reaction.

I'm sorry that it upsets you. I don't think this story should be raised with more publicity. If it does, I bet Mauldin will let her go. I bet she can handle this situation internally, you know?

Well, in all honesty, that's showing a bit of bias. Just because she is a member of the media does not mean that she shouldn't be subject to the same scrutiny as anyone else.

Any private citizen would recieve a write up in the paper (at least here), and there's a good chance that their boss could see it and take action- not to mention it's going to be on public record.

So why not let the facts and imbellishments come out in court and let her deal with it as best she can?
