GRAND JUNCTION(KJCT)- The building that houses KREX-TV on Hillcrest Drive was totally destroyed by a fire that started around 8:30 this morning. Crews had the fire under control a few hours later.

There were a few people in the building at the time. Initially they were unaware of the fire but were able to make it out on there own. No injuries have been reported.

According to the GJFD, the first arriving unit attempted an interior attack but were quickly driven out due to the thick smoke and dangerous conditions. In all, four engine companies responded.

Mike Paige of the GJFD, said a smoke explosion was a big concern for them due to the construction of the building. The building was old with many remodels over the years. There was no fire sprinkler system in the building.

"This building was built back in the 50's. KREX was the first TV station to go on the air in this market, this is the original facility, it's kind of a historic station and building, and we're just heartbroken to see this happen." Ron Tillery General Manager of KREX said.

Fire fighters do not know the cause of the fire at this time, but say the building sustained and estimated $6-million in damages.

Our heartfelt wishes go out to their crew.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area due to traffic congestion. The National CBS network feed will be available to cable and Dish Network customers.

This is really a sad situation.

The station was finally starting to make some ratings gains after decades in the gutter. They had invested a ton of money in a syndicated G.O. graphics package and a new set in just the past couple of years, and now it's all gone. I've heard the only thing that was saved was the ENG camera's.

krextv.com is back up this morning with a statement about the fire. They also have a video promo up that shows their graphics and now charred set.

As of last night, KKCO had a statement of condolences at nbc11news.com... I would guess it's still there this morning.

It sucks to see a station finally starting to pull itself up,only to be knocked back down in such a complete way.

Hopefully Hoak has the resources to keep everyone employed, and to get a new building up quickly.
