ABC Logo Standardization?

So this is really damned interesting...

ABCNews.com has a video player - and what I find neat is that at the top right, they display your local affiliate's logo. As I'm in Philadelphia, I get the 6ABC logo. And, up until about a week ago, the logo was the standard one ABC always seems to use - grey 6, red ABC ball, proportions completely out of whack compared to WPVI's "standard" logo:

So I log on this week... and they changed it. The proportions are correct, but the treatment isn't what they use on air at all. It's an insanely glossy all-black number... with the slick new ABC sphere that they've seemed to adopt as the "official" treatment.

A quick manipulation shows that all the O&Os, as expected, now feature the new treatment in some way or another - some have nice new logo treatments, others have paste jobs:

Here's where it gets interesting. Apparently, every single ABC affiliate has the new glossy sphere inserted in their logos. From big:

To small:

Keep in mind... I have no idea whether or not this is being used on air at any of the stations. I've seen the black treatment on WPVI once - as part of the ABC standard digital switchover promo. KABC and KGO are using the treatment on the sites apparently, but beyond that, nothing.

At the same time they changed these, they also seem (at WPVI) to have finally changed the logos for both ABC network promos, and the watermark that appears when the network comes back from break. The ABC network promos for WPVI now use the standard logo they use on newscasts, and the watermark is a nice-looking outline. And both - FINALLY - have been redone so that the proportions match the actual 6ABC logo.

I've first seen the new O&O logos on their website's ad bar which they're airing those custom DTVAnswer commercials with the ABC graphics. I thought that was interesting to see on all of those websites.

They even have the new ABC logo on stations that don't reguarly incorporate the network logo into their local logo. Look at Grand Rapids' WZZM

After checking out some of the affiliate logos, a few don't have the new ABC Logo.

Yeah, they are clamping down a bit. I can't blame them to be honest...it's a nice logo, and given the reflective nature of it...if you know what you're doing, you can do a lot with it.

Thank you for posting the WEAR logo. That logo has been used in the corner of some recent network promotions.

I was wondering if ABC, will mandate all of their affilates to use the new glossy logo. Our ABC affilate wten, doesnt normaly use the abc logo in their logo (dumb i think)

WGNO in New Orleans.

A quick check on their website shows they're not using the new ABC logo, which is a shame, because it goes well with what they got (which ain't much).

They don't even utilize the ABC logo, except in their promo bugs when it relates to network programming. Other than that, they still use their "News 2" logo for everything else.

When I went online (to the abc video player) this is how the WTEN logo looked, I have NEVER seen them use it with the new glosey logo. Also I think the abc logo looks odd there.

sometimes its in the 0 of the 10:

wten_abc10_albany.jpgBut they never use this on the newscasts..oddly enough, this one is not on their website.

WTEN_logo.jpg This is what they use

Very unconsistant aren't they?!?

Guys, before you get your knickers in a knot....these stations are more than likely not changing their logo. As I said above, it's likely that someone at the network simply added them in.

I second that motion.

Here's the link to see the bitmap file for each station's logo. Just replace "WSB" in this instance with whatever station you are intersted in seeing.

Agreed with cfif...likely done by an ABC art department guy using local logo clip-art kept on file at the network.

Interestingly enough the KDNL logo doesn't look like it's been altered.

Actually, WEAR has been using a new version of their logo with the new ABC logo since the fall. All of Sinclair's stations (except for WXLV) are using the old ABC logo with this setup. WCHS's is their old logo they haven't used in almost 2 years!
