Former WBBM TV-Ch. 2 news anchor Linda MacLennan was knocked to the ground when she confronted a man suspected of breaking into cars at the Westfield Old Orchard shopping center in Skokie, authorities said today.

In an interview with WGN-TV Ch. 9, MacLennan said she struggled with the man after seeing him leave her car Thursday about 2 p.m.

"The defendant was seen exiting the victim's car. The victim approached the defendant. The defendant knocked the victim to the ground," said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman with the Cook County state's attorney's office. MacLennan is listed in the state's attorney's office report under her married name, Linda Rammelt, Simonton said.

Skokie Police said a Park Ridge man was arrested after he shoved her to the ground in the shopping center parking lot.

Police said the victim yelled as the man fled, and an alert citizen was able to give police a description of the getaway car and a license plate number. The suspect, Johnathan Neumann, 21, of the 2000 block of Linden Avenue, Park Ridge, was eventually apprehended.

Neumann was charged with four counts of felony burglary from a motor vehicle and one count of misdemeanor battery, police said. He is suspected of breaking into three other vehicles; one of those crimes occurred at Old Orchard on Oct 1, another happened Tuesday in Skokie in the 9400 block of Skokie Boulevard and the other one occurred Sept. 19 in Park Ridge, Simonton said.

Neumann's bail was set at $250,000 when he appeared for his bond hearing today in the Skokie Courthouse, she said. His next scheduled court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 23.
