qwertnyc 1
What is the reason for a temperature bug, if the stations are not accurately indicating the "real feel" temperature? I would suspect that people dress in the mornings based on the outside temperature, but on a day like this when the temperature is 26, but the windchill is 12 what kind of service are they providing? Wouldn't it make sense if they toggled back and forth between the actual temperature and the windchill? Harry Houdini 0
That's waaaaaaay too much information. If it's 26 degrees, you should be dressed for it. If it's going to be a chance of rain would you "toggle" back and forth with an unmbrella? If it's going to be a chance of rain would you "toggle" back and forth with an unmbrella? Not really that ridiculous of a thought. Most of the stations here do it when the wind chill becomes dangerous. When that happens, the bug also stays up during non-news programming on some channels. Harry Houdini 0
No one said it was ridiculous. Very, very few stations leave the bug on non-news show. Either way, there are too many bugs, crawls, logos etc. now. Either way, I'm surprised no one has chimed in that this in the wrong catergory. They must be slipping. TrfRptr 3
How do you dress differently for 26 degrees compared to 12? I understand you're point, most of the national stations have rotating bugs for time (E/C/M/P). How would you indicate on the bug the real-feal and temp? You'd have to add more text (thus clutter) and then it becomes to big and on and on and on. Geoffrey 861
Once you get below a certain level, cold is cold and there's not much more that you can do. But I remember back when CBS 2 was using the orange graphics (1998-2000), they sometimes put the wind chill above the time and temp in the bug in the morning. I don't recall them doing that anytime since then, though. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/4717-weather-bug-idea/#findComment-44201 Share on other sites
qwertnyc 1
The question is not how this information would be executed on screen (as I admit the screen is already cluttered), but what service are they providing. Let's face it, in the summer months the temperature bug is completely insignificant. Who doesn't know how to dress for a 76 degree morning in August (hint: no jacket)? The only time the temperature bug is important is in the winter. Needing a coat is one thing, but added layers, scarves, long-johns. etc is entirely different. The example given above was only a 14 degree difference, but still significant when you reach a particular threshold. I, for one, would dress the same for 12 degrees or at a 12 degree windchill, but would not dress the same at 26. DMA 135
It's not a big deal. I walk two miles every day in the cold. If it's 34 degrees out, I know it's cold. I don't need a bug to tell me that I should dress warmly. People aren't stupid.
