Just days after announcing the hires of two new anchors on its sagging morning show, CBS affiliate WTSP-Ch. 10 has let go a longtime face: 4 p.m. anchor Marty Matthews will end a nearly 16-year tenure at the station, following a decision not to renew her contract.

Matthews is one of the longest-tenured anchors at the station, behind top evening anchor Reginald Roundtree and co-anchor Dave Wirth, now the sole anchor of WTSP's 4 p.m. newscast. She has been best known, outside of her regular anchoring gigs, for the Wednesday's Child feature profiling kids in need of adoption.

ugh, this SUCKS! Marty Matthews was a complete class act and did amazing work for the community.

While I understand that stations are getting desperate in this economy, this is really sad.

There goes the last reason to watch WTSP. First went content, then character.

That is horrible I love Marty and I agree 10 is getting worse. Only Dave and to a lesser degree Heather are tolerable. Gannett is screwing up WTSP!

TSP isn't helping itself either. They choose to lose talent and keep trash.

Update: They informed her of this by leaving a Manila envelope on her doorstep....

After more than 15 years delivering news to Tampa Bay area viewers, Marty Matthews’ career at WTSP-Ch. 10 ended Tuesday with a manila envelope left on the doorstep of her St. Petersburg home. That’s where the 48-year-old anchor discovered a letter informing her the CBS affiliate was exercising a window in her contract and terminating her job. An official at the St. Petersburg station said they had to send the letter, after repeated attempts to meet with Matthews in person failed.

The anchor called the statement “a lie” saying she was blindsided by the news and had no idea managers were considering ending her job.

“They sure could find somebody to drive over to my house and leave a manila envelope here...why didn't they find time to ask me while I was in the office?” said Matthews, struggling to contain her anger. “I even chose to take a five-day furlough in the 1st quarter to help them save money and a be a good ‘company gal.’ And this is the thanks I got.”

this is getting real nasty real quick.

So, 10 is having trouble connecting to tell the talent that they're going to be disconnected.
