Pittsburgh Storm Coverage

Some parts of the Pittsburgh area suffered from major storms yesterday and there were several counties in the area last night under tornado warnings and watches. Many people also suffered from flooding and power outages as well.

KDKA was on for several hours last night with Patrice King Brown and Stacy Smith anchoring. Jon Burnett was in the weather center filling in for Jeff Verzyla. Dave Trygar also called in and talked with Jon about what exactly a torndao watch and warning is and what people in the track of the storms should do. Marty Griffin was out earlier in the evening in Edgewood and was back in the newsroom later in the evening with his story. Paul Martino was live on the phone in Turtle Creek where they had a lot of flooding on the road.

I believe WPXI was doing updates at the top of the hour, but I'm not sure because I wasn't really watching them. Darieth Chisholm was anchoring the coverage. Julie Bologna and Scott Harbaugh were handling the weather coverage.

I didn't catch any of WTAE, so I don't know how they handled the storm coverage.

From my experience of living in both markets, Denver and Minneapolis stations go bat crazy whenever severe weather hits, with full coverage of the storms often for hours from almost all the stations.

I even remember in Denver how each station would go tornado chasing with their copters, to try to beat the competition in getting the winning shot.

Yeah. It's almost as if there has never been any severe wx in the Pittsburgh market. KDKA and WPXI went way overboard (not sure about 'TAE). I mean 2+ hours on the air for KDKA? Just a little excessive.
