WBBM set changes

It appears they're beginning to do work on the WBBM set. The large main anchor desk that hasn't been used for a few weeks is now gone. I noticed the past couple days that lights on that desk platform weren't on and cords have been disconnected from it. The side of the studio with the fake monitor backdrop and 103-inch plasmas has been blocked off too. They've readjusted camera angles to completely avoid any shots of that side of the studio.

I'm guessing this is all for their new morning show starting Feb. 1.

They just showed a little sneak peak of the Monsters & Money in The Morning show set on the 10PM news tonight..

The fake monitor wall is gone. It has been replaced with a duratran of what looks like a room with a window overlooking the city and some monitors around that window.. It's kinda weird looking but I'll wait until it debuts and is fully lit before I make any real judgements. The new round table is in place. They are just using the chairs from the former anchor desk for the new table. You can see for yourself in this video:

The spot behind Rob Johnson sitting at the table with Dan where the large plasma was removed seems to have been replaced with a large backlit panel with the Monsters & Money in The Morning logo.

Almost looks like an RP screen to me. If it IS a backlit panel... why on earth did they put that in the monitor space most likely to end up on-screen during an evening newscast? Oh, WBBM...

I remember a few years ago when I saw that set being built (Back in the day, the space above the old monitor wall said "CBS 2 NEWS", even! When it premiered I think it just said "CBS 2"). I thought it was going to look pretty cool. Now they're just making it lame.

That was the same question I asked myself.. Heck, I still wonder why they removed/sold that giant plasma instead of the other one.. That is the side is still shown on screen during all the other newscasts. They still just roll one of the rolling cart plasmas in front of that space to cover it.

If that is an RP screen, then they should have just left the silver border in place so it would at least match the other side.. The silver border was still there until only a couple days ago. Come to think of it, they probably still had the RP screen and projector from their old studio from the 2002 "Works for you" days which only got a few months use so they could have very well just reinstalled that.

When this set premiered, the space above the monitor wall just had the "CBS 2" logo in the center with "cbs2chicago.com" on both sides of the logo.. I personally just liked the "CBS 2 News" up there better but I think that change was a last minute GM Ahern change. As for the fake monitor wall, I personally would have just put a city skyline duratran in the place. The duratrans from their old studio were almost the exact same size as that space, so heck, they could have just put those up there too. Or like I've said in a post before, if you're going to do a fake monitor wall, make all those monitors real monitors..

I found this photo of the set on Flickr: Live from CBS 2 Chicago It's the set when it was used the way it was originally meant to be used.. The original anchor desk chairs are being used there too but were later replaced with different chairs because management didn't like the giant chair backs being shown.

If you notice in that photo, there is a diagonal line on the side wall in front of the fake monitor wall.. That's the line where the original frosted glass to cover the backdrop was inserted. It was removed a few days before they premiered at their new studio. Someone said it was because of the vehicle lights outside reflected off it. I was told it was because Ahern didn't like the way it looked on screen. Those were wrapped in blankets and just stored in the other studio among the piles of stuff they brought over from their old studios.. It's a little hard to tell from the video just put up on CBS 2's website but it looks like they reinstalled that glass..

As for the anchor desk, I have no idea what its fate is now.. I heard it was stored in the other studio. Rumors a while back said it was going to be moved to the newsroom. I hope they just don't throw it away. It's a nice desk. I remember the day it was delivered to the studios there. A portion of it arrived broken so a replacement piece had to be sent over. I say if they don't use it, they should sell it to another station out there. I'm sure there are alot of stations out there that would kill to have an anchor desk like that at a good price.

Their new morning show table and much of the set work is being done by Chicago Scenic.. ALL the Chicago stations use them. I have very mixed feelings about their work. Some of the stuff they do is great and others are just horribly ugly. Any updates and most new construction you see being done to any Chicago news set is done by them due to the whole Chicago union thing that has to be abide by here in Chicago.. I'm not liking that new round table. It just doesn't seem to match the set. They should have just given Jack Morton/PDG a call to design their new morning show set so it would have better matched but I'm guessing that would have been too expensive..

Ugh.. not only studio 5 but all the more recent and latest changes/updates made to their main newsroom studio set have been by Chicago Scenic.

Speaking of set changes, WFLD FOX Chicago made a set change today. It appears the giant RP screen on the set has been replaced with a large plasma. It makes more sense being the wide HD format. I was wondering why they just didn't put that in to begin with. Has any other FOX O&O's replaced their giant RP with a large plasma?

A portion of the new plasma can be seen around the 4:25 mark of this video:

This past Friday was marked the end of CBS 2 Morning News. CBS 2 no longer has a morning newscast. It was kind of a trainwreck towards to end being a newcast made up of a veteran morning anchor and 3 meteorologists..

CBS 2 has made clear their new morning show is a MORNING SHOW, not a newscast. If you're looking to watch the news in the morning, you'll have to turn on another station.. This is going to be a morning sports and money talk show. Susan Carlson will have news segments and Meteorologist Mary Kay Kleist continuing to do weather as permanent morning meteorologist.

Here's the video from the final CBS 2 Morning News close on January 29:
