With a week to go in the ratings-intensive November “sweeps” period, Chris Slaughter, news director at WWL-Channel 4 since fall 2006 and a news staffer at the station dating back to the late 1970s, has been fired.

Evening news anchor Mike Hoss is Slaughter’s interim replacement.

Bud Brown, WWL’s president and general manager, declined to comment on specifics of Slaughter’s departure, citing company policy that forbids public discussion of personnel matters. Reached Thursday evening, Slaughter also declined to comment.

Slaughter’s time at the WWL news team’s helm saw a few key staff losses – most notably Lee Zurik’s defection to WVUE-Channel 8 earlier this year, and Lucy Bustamante’s exit last month to follow her husband’s job to the east coast – but the station remains the dominant TV-news provider in New Orleans.

Last year, WWL earned a George Foster Peabody Award – generally considered broadcast journalism’s highest honor -- for a series of investigative stories by Zurik.

Most recently, the station has initiated newscast commentaries by Gambit editor Clancy DuBos, a throwback to the Phil Johnson era Slaughter joined as an entry level newsroom desk assistant.

Hoss will continue to anchor, and apparently is a candidate for the full time news director slot.

“We’ll conduct a large search to find the right person,” Brown said. “Everyone will be considered.”
