A very big accomplishment for WCBS-TV: The station has won the overall household ratings race at 11 p.m. This marks the first time since 1994 that the station has won the 11 p.m. news race and the first time since 1991 that the station has won the 11 p.m. news race without the help of the Winter Olympics (which previously aired on CBS).

WABC won all other HH ratings for news time periods and maintained its lead in key Adult 25-54 demographics in the morning, 5pm and 6pm newscasts. At noon, WCBS took the demo while WABC took the Women 25-54 demo.

It has been said before that WABC usually goes from #3 or #4 at 10pm (thanks to ABC network lead-ins) and grows to #2 or #1 most nights at 11pm while WCBS mostly loses viewers. The fact, however, that WCBS is now retaining enough viewers to hold on to that edge should be a clear sign that Eyewitness News @ 11 needs to be re-energized or promoted a little better. ABC network won't suddenly be given affiliates #1 hits at 10pm anytime soon, so change needs to happen on the local level if WABC wants to take back the 11pm crown.

Finally, a changing of the guard.

5pm/6pm newscasts will definitely be more competitive after Oprah ends. Great opportunity for WCBS to continue to take advantage.
