KSAT finished the sweeps period #2 overall. KENS beat us in the morning and at 10:00. We won noon, 5:00, and 6:00. Not to shabby.

Haven't gotten to see the numbers yet, but we were neck and neck. There's always May..........

The KENS 10 p.m. news team had something to celebrate today at the end of an image-bruising week that saw the absence of sportscaster Joe Reinagel for a couple of days after his arrest on charges including public intoxication.

The newscast remains No. 1 in the local news race, according to February Nielsen ratings, which wrapped up Wednesday night.

KSAT finished a close second, and WOAI was third.

All late newscasts delivered strong investigative and consumer-help pieces during February sweeps, a good balance to the usual fear-and-dread reports that seem to be staples of ratings.

Examples: Vicki Buffolino did a report on the safety of kids' car seats, which, according to KENS general manager Bob McGann was especially well-received by viewers. Chris Marrou also did a clever package that tested viewers on whether they'd be good witnesses to a crime.

WOAI delivered an eye-opening report on the dangers of driving while text messaging and a two-part investigation into certification tests for teachers. KSAT also pulled out some compelling investigative work on topics such as couples being cheated in wedding photo scams and a woman whose life was turned upside down when she contributed money to a phony cause via the Internet.

Buffolino's promotion from weekend anchor to morning co-anchor paid off for KENS; its 5-7 a.m. block finished No. 1. KSAT's early news, which was expanded by a half-hour prior to this ratings book, scored a strong No. 2, and WOAI finished third.

It should be noted that KABB's fairly fledgling "Fox News First," from 7-9 a.m., is making its own mark in morning news. KSAT was the leader at noon (with its popular hourlong newscast) and for its news shows at 5 and 6 p.m., co-anchored by Steve Spriester and the sunny and beloved Leslie Mouton.

As for which network leads in prime-time here, the order for Monday through Sunday is as follows: CBS; ABC; NBC and Univision (virtually tied); followed by Fox.

In the weekday prime-time race, Fox actually outscored NBC and Univision here, coming in third, based in part on the increasing strength of "American Idol." KABB's 9 p.m. local news also saw a boost in this ratings book.
