  1. Jack Atherton is leaving Cincinnati’s WLWT to join WKEF-WRGT in Dayton as the main anchor, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The move comes eight months after Atherton left the 11 p.m. anchor desk at WLWT, a shift which was said to allow him to “dig into the elections during this critical political year.” He was replaced by Mike Dardis, who joined the station from KOMO in April. Atherton’s last day at WLWT is today. He will make his debut in Dayton October 17. WPXI morning news co-anchor and former WCBS Alum Todd McDermott will have the luxury of sleeping in when he takes a new job beginning next week at WPBF ABC 25, the Hearst television station in West Palm Beach, Fla. Mr. McDermott, whose last day with WPXI's 4:30 a.m. morning news show is Friday, will anchor the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. broadcasts. His WPXI co-anchor, Jennifer Abney, has a new colleague at the desk with the Oct. 22 arrival of Joe Arena. Mr. Arena has been a news anchor and reporter at CBS affiliate WIVB in Buffalo, N.Y., for the past five years.

  3. There are changes coming to the anchor lineup at WTTG, the Fox O&O in Washington, DC. Will Thomas is stepping into the role of weeknight 5 p.m. anchor alongside Shawn Yancy. Thomas, currently the station’s weekend evening anchor, will also report for the 10 and 11 p.m. newscasts in his new role. Thomas replaces Laura Evans, who will step into the role of weekend evening anchor alongside Maureen Umeh. Evans will expand her reporting duties at WTTG, contributing to the weekday newscasts as the consumer reporter.

  5. John Discepolo begins next week as the primary anchor at WPEC, the CBS affiliate in West Palm Beach. Discepolo comes from KOMO, the ABC affiliate in Seattle, where he has been a weekend anchor and weekday reporter since 2010. Prior to his time in Seattle, Discepolo also worked at WCBS and WNYW in New York and KDFW in Dallas. At WPEC, Discepolo will anchor the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Liz Quirantes. His first broadcast will be September 24. Julie Luck, anchor at WGHP in Greensboro, NC, is leaving the station. While there’s no word on where she’s headed, the station’s website posted a statement from the FOX affiliate’s president and general manager Karen Adams saying Luck was leaving to “explore other opportunities.”Adams went on to say, “We appreciate Julie’s contributions to the FOX8 News team over the past 7 years, and wish her all the best in pursuing other options. She is a professional and classy lady”. Luck who anchors the 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. newscasts said, “It’s been a privilege bringing you the news nightly. Although I’ve decided to move on to explore new opportunities, the FOX8 family will always be near and dear to my heart.” Maria Antonia has signed off from KMBC after 28 years with the Kansas City ABC affiliate. “As I said at the end of my last KMBC broadcast Friday, I thank the people of our community,” Antonia told Bottom Line Communications. “For 28 years so many families were willing to share their stories, even when it wasn’t easy.” Antonia will be taking on an expanded role at The Bishop Sullivan Center, where she has been a volunteer for several years. Her husband, KMBC photojournalist Tim Twyman, will remain at the station, according to Bottom Line.
  6. Deanna Dewberry is coming back to D/FW and will join Dallas NBC O&O KXAS next month. Dewberry will be a consumer and investigative reporter for NBC 5. She comes to the station from WISH in Indianapolis, where she co-anchors the noon and 5 p.m. newscasts. It is a return to Dallas for the Texas native, who used to be an anchor and reporter at WFAA in Dallas. She has also worked at KLBK and KCBD in Lubbock, Tex., and KTHV in Little Rock.

  8. Nexstar has renewed affiliation agreements with CBS for eight of its stations, the company announced today. The long-term extensions are at KLBK in Lubbock, TX, KLST in San Angelo, TX, KTAB in Abilene, TX, WCIA in Decatur, IL, WFRV in Green Bay, WJMN in Marquette, WMBD in Peoria and WROC in Rochester. Mission Broadcasting has also renewed an affiliation agreement with CBS for KOLR in Springfield, MO, which Nexstar operates under a local marketing agreement. WSBT, The South Bend CBS affiliate, has added Rick Schutt and Jennifer Copeland to a three anchor rotation that includes longtime anchor Cindy Ward. Ward’s previous co-anchor at 5 and 6 p.m., Dustin Grove, retired from TV news on Friday. The lineup looks something like this: Schutt and Copeland will anchor the 5 p.m., Copeland and Ward will take the 5:30 while Schutt and and Copeland will again anchor the 6. Schutt will take the 10 pm. and will be joined by Ward for the 11.

Seattle ABC-affiliate KOMO has announced that anchor Kathi Goertzen is back in the hospital as a result of her ongoing battle with brain tumors. “She has had a bit of a setback and is in the hospital again,” a statement on KOMO’s website reads. “As you know, Kathi believes very strongly in the power of prayer and how your love and support give her strength. We know right now Kathi would appreciate your thoughts and prayers.” Goertzen developed pneumonia while undergoing treatment for her brain tumors, which she has been fighting for 12 years.   11. Raleigh-Durham NBC-affiliate WNCN will have a new evening co-anchor next month: Pam Saulsby, until last year was an anchor at rival station WRAL. Saulsby signed off from WRAL last year after 20 years with the CBS-affiliate. In her new role at WNCN, she will co-anchor the 7 and 11 p.m. newscasts alongside Penn Holderness (pictured with Saulsby) and chief meteorologist Wes Hohenstein, as well as produce reports for the station.

Jim Henderson, the longtime radio voice of the New Orleans Saints who retired from his sports director post at WWL earler this year after 34 years with the CBS-affiliate, has signed on with Fox-affiliate WVUE as a football analyst. Henderson signed off from WWL in January, planning to continue as the Saints play-by-play announcer on WWL-AM. Now, his semi-retirement will include regular appearances on WVUE during the NFL season. Mike Brooks is returning to his home state to join KOKH, the Fox-affiliate in Oklahoma City, as evening anchor. Brooks was most recently a freelance anchor at WFTX in Fort Myers. Prior to that, he was morning anchor at WGCL in Atlanta. Brooks, who signed off from WFTX on Friday, will be anchoring KOKH’s 9 and 10 p.m. newscasts alongside Jamie Cerreta.

  15. Anchor Paul Joncich is joining KLAS, the CBS-affiliate in Las Vegas, next month. Joncich comes from WOIO in Cleveland, where he has been an anchor for the past six years. At KLAS, he replaces Gary Waddell, who is retiring. Joncich will anchor the noon, 4 and 4:30 p.m. newscasts, as well as reporting for the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts. After 18 years as chief meteorologist at KOCO in Oklahoma City, Rick Mitchell is moving to Dallas to join KXAS. Mitchell replaces Jennifer Lopez, who left the NBC O&O earlier this year. Prior to joining KOCO in 1993, Mitchell worked as a meteorologist at WOI in Des Moines and at AccuWeather in State College, PA. Tampa NBC-affiliate WFLA has announced the launch of a 7 p.m. newscast beginning July 30. The newscast’s debut coincides with the start of the Olympics, which will air on NBC. It will be anchored by Jennifer Leigh, who currently anchors WFLA’s 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, and one other person who has yet to be hired.

Hubbard Broadcasting is shutting down news operations at KSAX, its ABC-affiliate in Central Minnesota, and 17 employees are being laid off. “Although this has been a difficult decision for our company, we will be streamlining operations at KSAX-TV beginning today,” Hubbard Broadcasting president Rob Hubbard announced in an email to staff Tuesday morning. Hubbard plans to maintain KSAX’s studio in Alexandria, MN but the station will no longer produce local news. Instead, KSAX viewers will receive all of their news from sister station KSTP in Minneapolis-St. Paul. In his announcement, Hubbard promised that the 17 employees being laid off would “receive severance pay and benefits, along with outplacement assistance.” “We’re grateful for the service that KSAX and its employees have provided to west Central Minnesota for the past 25 years,” Hubbard added. Jennifer Myers is joining KDFW in Dallas as the weekend meteorologist, the Fox O&O announced today. Myers begins on July 24 as the meteorologist on the Saturday and Sunday morning newscasts. She comes from KVIA in El Paso, where she has been a meteorologist, reporter, fill-in anchor and web producer since 2010. “I’m very excited about joining the FOX4 team,” Myers said in a statement. “Severe weather has always been my passion, so being in a place where I can do what I love is really something I’m looking forward to.”

  18. Tom Leyden has been promoted to sports director at WXYZ, the ABC-affiliate in Detroit. Leyden replaces Don Shane, who retired in March after 23 years at the station. He has been a sports anchor at WXYZ since 2004. In his new role, Leyden plans to expand the delivery of sports content on web and mobile platforms. “We need to continue to stay current and relevant,” Leyden said in a statement. “That means finding new ways to deliver sports information to our viewers when and where they want it. We want to be part of their lives.” Evening anchor Nina Radetich is leaving KTNV next month to pursue new opportunities and spend more time with her family, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my professional life, whatever it may be, and really looking forward to more time with my family,” Radetich said. “My husband and son are the world to me, and being the best wife and mom I can be will always be my top priority.” Radetich, who joined KNTV in 2007, anchors the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts at the Las Vegas ABC-affiliate. After her departure, weekend anchor Tricia Kean will move into the weekday evening anchor position alongside Steve Wolford.
  19. Popular Indianapolis meteorologist Angela Buchman is leaving WISH to join crosstown rival WTHR. An Indiana native, Buchman has been with WISH since 2001. According to multiple sources, she is set to depart the LIN Media flagship for a job at WTHR, the market’s #1 station. As the Indianapolis Business Journal points out, it’s unclear what the move means for WTHR’s primary meteorologist Chris Wright, who has been with the station since 1999.
  20. Boston Fox O&O WFXT is expanding its local newscasts beginning next month, VP-GM Gregg Kelley announced today. Beginning in July, WFXT’s morning newscast, anchored by Gene Lavanchy and Shannon Mulaire, will launch a half-hour earlier, at 4 a.m. The station will also launch a weekend newscast at 6 p.m. The weekend newscast will launch July 7, and the 4 a.m. morning newscast will debut on July 9. “This additional expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to covering news for the viewers wherever and whenever it happens,” Kelley said in a statement.
  21. Leon Bibb is no longer the anchor of the WEWS 6 p.m. newscast, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports. Bibb joined the Cleveland ABC-affiliate in 1995 and has been co-anchor of the 6 p.m. newscast since 2010. He will continue to anchor the station’s noon newscast, as well as its Sunday morning show, “Kaleidoscope.” He will also take over two new programs, “Leon Bibb’s Ohio” and “Leon Bibb’s Perspective.” “Leon is still a very vital part of what we have here,” WEWS vice president and general manager Sam Rosenwasser told the Plain-Dealer. “We want to put a spotlight on what he has.” Bibb’s replacement at 6 p.m. is Chris Flanagan, who also co-anchors the 11 p.m. newscast. He took over alongside Lee Jordan on Monday.
  22. Jim Rosenfield, a veteran anchor who made his mark in New York with WNBC and WCBS, is joining WRC in Washington, D.C. The NBC-owned station announced today that Rosenfield is coming on board as a weekend anchor. “Jim is a talented anchor and reporter, but more importantly, he’s an all-around good guy,” said Camille Edwards, WRC’s vice president of news, announcing the move. “I’ve known him for almost 20 years, and I am so happy to be working with him again. He is a perfect addition to our winning news team.” Rosenfield spent a decade working as a reporter and anchor in New York, first at WCBS, then at WNBC, then back at WCBS, where he replaced Ernie Anastos on the station’s evening newscasts. He signed off from WCBS for good in May of 2008. Rosenfield worked at KTRK in Houston and WLS in Chicago before moving to New York. “I am thrilled to be joining WRC and returning to the NBC family,” Rosenfield said. “This is an exciting time to be in the nation’s capital, and I look forward to working with one of the strongest, most respected television news teams in the country.”
  23. Yetta Gibson, who has worked as a reporter and morning field anchor for KTVK since 2010, has been promoted to evening anchor at the Phoenix independent station. Beginning Monday, Gibson will anchor KTVK’s 6 p.m. newscast alongside Fields Moseley, and solo anchor the station’s 10 p.m. news. “Can’t wait 2 work w/u!” Gibson tweeted to Moseley on Wednesday. As part of KTVK’s evening shuffle, Moseley and Carey Pena will move from 10 p.m. to co-anchor the station’s hour-long 9 p.m. newscast. Pena will also host “Politics Unplugged,” KTVK’s weekly public affairs show. Patti Kirkpatrick will stay on as anchor of KTVK’s 4:30, 5:00, and 5:30 p.m. newscasts.
  24. WTVJ announced today that Adam Kuperstein will join Jackie Nespral as anchor of the NBC station’s 5, 6, and 11 p.m. newscasts. Kuperstein, who has been with WTVJ since 2005, has transitioned to the news desk over the last several months while serving as the station’s weekend sports anchor and weekday sports reporter. For the past six years, he has also co-hosted WTVJ’s Sunday night sports show. “This is an incredible honor for me,” Kuperstein said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to come into our viewers’ homes in this new role and look forward to informing and serving the South Florida community for many years.” Before joining WTVJ, Kuperstein served as the weekend sports anchor at Toledo Fox-affiliate WUPW. Prior to that, he was the weekend sports anchor at WHIZ, the NBC-affiliate in Zanesville, OH. In December, Kuperstein began anchoring WTVJ’s weekend morning newscasts. In addition to Kuperstein’s promotion, WTVJ announced two other staff moves today. Trina Robinson is moving from the station’s 11 a.m. newscast to anchor the news at 5:30 p.m., and morning anchor Pam Giganti will add the 11 a.m. newscast to her list of duties. “I am delighted to announce these expanded roles for three individuals so dedicated and passionate about what they do,” WTVJ president and general manager Manuel Martinez said, announcing the moves. “These changes to our anchor line-up will continue to position NBC 6 in line to serve our community and our viewers.”
