6A actually launched earlier than Monday.  Yes, it hit the air Monday but it was a live studio prior to that as Kelly tapes about a week in advance. The season premiere that aired on Monday was taped on October 10.

But the launch of 6A has very little connection to 3B. If you were looking for a studio launch that could impact WNBC, look to the other half of the studio. With WNBC and WNJU sharing 3B, you are bringing two spaces online at the same time. Not to mention the logistical hurdles associated with moving WNJU into 30 Rock.

So the telemundo side of 3B doesn’t debut until next year.

Thanks @IceManNYR, I'm aware of the plan to split Studio 3B. I was inquiring about the set, not the studio. Nynewsguy made it sound like the new set is a rehash of the current set. So I was trying to figure out if I read his post correctly.

It’s legit a smaller version of what they are using now - just with a couple of additional stand-up areas.
Let’s put it this way - the changes that WABC makes to the studio for the 10am show on a daily basis are more substantial than what I’ve seen coming to WNBC.

WNBC shooting promos in new set guessing it debuts soon

    Don’t expect anything earth shattering.
it’s smaller than 3K that they are in now. Essentially, think of 3B but with curved walls.
Same style lucite desk. Same blue Peacocks all over.
if I didn’t know it was a different studio; I wouldn’t have guessed.

@nynewsguy - The music, that we heard for the opens for "Mornings at 10" is that part of the new music package? It didn't have the distinct Eyewitness News signature so was just curious. :)

Nope. The current mornings at 10 music isn’t part of the larger redesign.

Personality wise, I really think Sam has the best presence, I think Shirleen and Mike seem a little more wooden with the banter but maybe they'll warm up with time. I would have picked Sandra or Michelle

Should have definitely been Michelle for this show. Would have truly set it apart. Shirleen is stiff and has always come across as fake.  Put Michelle in that chair, you have a show that would actually be a true NY version of “Live”.

Sam brings years of hosting experience and is solid in his role. Don’t forget that before he moved to GMA, he would often fill-in for Regis on LIVE.

definitely would have updated the set and graphics to debut a new show, but as others have said, they plan on moving HQ so at least update the graphics.

New graphics and music package are coming soon - no new set though. That will be when the move to Hudson Square is complete.

Was WABC always #1 in the ratings?

WNBC with Chuck and Sue in the 80s and 90s were the team to beat if my history serves me correctly.

Actually I believe CBS was #1 at 11. In the 80s. NBC was in early 90s. WABC gained dominance when they picked up Oprah. 5pm on WABC was the newscast in NY. They started to win at 11 in the late 90s and AM when Lori Stokes joined. Since 2000 it’s been a virtual landslide.

Just found this article from Pagesix, saying Mike Marza is the likely candidate to replace Ken, but would not put much stock into this: https://pagesix.com/2023/05/23/mike-marza-poised-to-replace-fired-anchor-ken-rosato-at-wabc-7/

Either way I do think this will resolve with putting Mike in some weekday slot. Jim Rosenfield would be great in any timeslot. I could see Jim doing one or a few of the evening slots also if they wanted to put David Navarro onto mornings?

Moving David to mornings was actually the original plan - team him with Shirleen - AM and noon, Bill and Liz at 4 and 6 and Mike and Sade at 5 and 11 - but that has since been passed on. Bill not too keen to give up 11 permanently until after the 2024 election cycle.

however, talk as of late has Mike moving to 5pm in the interim. After 2024, Bill staying on at 6pm

    only.

I hope he is, but is he going to be Bill Ritter's successor?

No. That would be Mike Marza. When expect Mike to be on weeknights by the fall. Not completely replacing him - just alleviating some of the load.

  10. Listen guys -

I said Ken was fired for cause. What he said wasn’t right. It’s a disgusting word to use, let alone call someone.
what I said was that SA has been the same person for 20 years. She is not the nicest person. She knows how to be fake.  If she doesn’t feel like she can gain something from you - she’s not very friendly.

  11. Yes, different anchor pairings will be tested.
don’t think that Ken didn’t speak up about Shirleen before walking out. That includes others on staff. While his comment was not appropriate - it’s not untrue. Known SA since Hofstra. Wasn’t a pleasant person 20 years ago and still isn’t.
warm and pleasant is Sandra Bookman. Shirleen isn’t liked by most.

Paramount Global is putting attention and care at the CBS stations for the first time in decades. They're beginning to implement changes sorely-needed in the industry that the other networks will imitate, including branding and identifiers. And yes, I will not be shocked if one day, WPVI rebrands to "ABC Philadelphia" and WABC becomes "ABC New York". It will absolutely happen.

"ABC 7" might mean WABC to you or WLS to someone in Chicago or KABC in Los Angeles, but they get drowned in a ton of other ABC 7s in social media and online portals. The current way of doing things is 100% unsustainable.

WABC will not change the channel 7 branding as long as they broadcast over the air. It’s the only of the O&O stations that the ABC# didn’t work when the Disney mandate pushed through years ago.

Can’t remember seeing him anchor 6pm but he’s done the 11pm a number of times.

Has Sade ever anchored 11pm solo? The reason is likely going way over my head but it seems they always use the most odd fill-in dynamics for Bill at 11pm though when Sade is off, Bill or his fill-in are usually solo. Also have never seen Sade fill in at 6pm though she often fills in on First@Four.

6pm is anchored solo unless Sandra is in specifically for Liz @ 4 - then she will join Bill at 6.

Sade prefers not to anchor alone, so David will generally join her at 11 in Bills absence.

Mike has been in for Bill at 5 a lot this summer. This is not by accident.

Why would they need five when two of them only work weekends? WPIX just added a weekend morning newscast, and they're having their weekday morning meteorologists to work one day each weekend. Then they seem to get a day off during the week and the weekend evening person covers their morning slot.

For those of you unaware - both Jeff and Brittany work 5-day weeks. Jeff is in evenings 3 days with Lee and Brittany is in mornings with Sam 3 days a week (including Friday obviously). They work as backup and wx producers when not on-air. They also can be found reporting on human-interest stories on occasion.
there is no such thing as a 2 day work week in television. As a matter of fact - there’s no such thing as a 5 day work week in local news either. You’re lucky if you have a couple of hours each day to sleep.

I thought David was born in 1959. He did start at WABC during his original tenure in 1981. I think Mike will replace Bill although we will see what happens.

WABC should have replaced Bill Beutel with Greg Hurst. He was about 30 years younger than Bill and familiar with the viewers. It is what it is although that would have made the most sense.

Ok well Greg Hurst parted ways because he wanted Beutel off the 11pm as part of his contract renewal. At the time, Bill wasn’t ready to hang it up at 11pm as it was before his diagnosis with Lewy Body. Hurst didn’t want just the 5pm and left. Hence Robb Hanrahan’s ascension to 5pm.

Lori is a class act. One of the best. She is on at 5,6,10 now and is much more comfortable in that element you can tell. The morning honestly is a little bit different and I feel it’s a little more acceptable to interject some more “insight” or “view” there. But on the evening shows where there are no interviews or anything like that I don’t think it’s acceptable.

Ahh the coulda, shoulda, woulda story of Lori. She should have been made 5pm anchor when Roz left for CBS, which would have set her up for 11pm several years later. Would have been a great team. Bill Ritter admired Lori, and vice versa.

There’s a reason why WABC went with Bill Ritter over Greg Hurst and Robb Hanrahan when Bill Beutel retired. I actually think they should have went with Harry Martin although that obviously was not the direction they wanted to go in. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Marza reached Bill when he eventually does retire.

David is heir apparent. He’s 14 years younger than Bill. He will get his day in the sun before anyone else does. Mike has a long time before he even gets off weekends.

  17. There’s already a chain of succession that has been established.
    Novarro replaces Ritter

    Torres replaces Novarro

    Marza replaces Torres

Josh doesn’t want an anchoring job - which is why he, along with the likes of Jim Dolan (the lead reporters) have never filled in on the desk.
Now you can go ahead and flame me - but when the time comes - look back to this post.

  18. This was 100% Rob’s choice. His contract was expiring, he was looking for more $$.  He used his time on FMLA to look for new opportunities and one came his way.
His resignation from the anchor desk effective immediately makes for less confusion for the viewer. Mike has been on for the past 6 months and to have Rob anchor for a month would just create more speculation.
You’ll find out where he’s off to once his contract is up. Rest assured Rob fans - he is not leaving television.
