Paramount and WBD should have only sold a combined 33% of their stakes in The CW to Nexstar, rather than giving up all but 25% of the network. By offloading the majority of the network to Nexstar, the company’s strategy for The CW seems to hinder it more in the name of making it profitable while making it more difficult for the network to make it into the black (even though they claim it’s slashed the network’s operating deficits, while simultaneously stating that the network’s revenue will soon no longer be disclosed publicly) by driving away its existing audience through the replacement of its more costly but better produced shows with low-cost fare and imports that make it less competitive with the Big Four.

It makes you wonder what the network would look like under a Paramount/WBD/Nexstar equal partnership. Would the programming be much like the CW pre-Nexstar or a hybrid of the old and new formats?

WBD & Paramount all but gave up on the CW in 2019 when they ended the Netflix deal and stopped selling CW shows oversees. They are the ones that set the CW down it's current path. Had Nexstar (or someone else) not assumed the network's $100 mil. debt in 2022/23, the CW likely wouldn't exist today.

I say this to say, that even if all three companies (WBD/Paramount/Nexstar) been equal partners, you still would need all three to be fully invested in the success of CW. It's clear that WBD and Paramount could care less about the network which leaves Nexstar to have to shoulder everything alone.

Yes they could have made more of an effort to keep/buy more expensive/higher quality programs, but again, if your main programming suppliers (WBD and Paramount) aren't willing to work with you, what can you do?????

I really hope they use the full studio and that it's used for news. It's a huge space for just weather...

I think they will (use the entire space). Based off the orange signage promoting the street side studio, my guess would be that the morning/streaming newscasts will move here. Plus, if designed properly, there should be enough room for an AR weather center/space as well.

If wbd doesn't get part of the deal, they're probably gonna file a lawsuit.   I don't think they will have a case.   NBC can offer what wbd can't,  which is broadcasting on regular tv while paying more $.

I wouldn't say they don't have a case. I don't think they have the $$$ to fight this. And if WBD were to match NBC's offer, NBC is in a much better position to go higher.

  4. After a long delay… the (reimagined) street side studio will be unveiled soon (tentatively scheduled for July).

Not sure if it’s just a state-of-the-art weather center (as previously reported) or something more. Nevertheless, glad to see the studio fully back up and running.

Don't know where else to put this but surprisingly NBC is breaking up the 3-hour Law and Order Thursday block to put Organized Crime on soely Peacock. According to execs it does well on streaming.

    https://collider.com/law-and-order-organized-crime-peacock-explained/

The strength of this block was to have Stabler and Benson back on tv on back to back shows.

On these forums, one of the biggest reasonings against NBC slashing its third hour of primetime was that it would destroy the Dick Wolf blocks on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

It's not too surprising L&O: OC moved to Peacock. Ratings-wise, it is the weakest of the L&O block and it just doesn't work well as a 22-episode show. I wouldn't be surprised if they move Chicago PD (Season 13) to Peacock as well.

As far as slashing the 3rd hr. of primetime, that likely isn't necessary if they get the NBA. Their scripted slate would be greatly reduced and result in cost-savings long term (which is part of the reason why they wanted to cut the hour in the first place).

Given that TNT's parent company WarnerMedia also operates NBA TV, I wonder if there is a scenario that "Inside the NBA" can somehow continue on that network.  Over the years, NBA TV's studio shows have featured Shaq, Kenny "The Jet" Smith, and others, from TNT, after all.  I haven't heard anyone specaulate about that scenerio in the media coverage yet.

If I'm not mistaken, 'Inside the NBA' is repeated on NBA TV, so it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities to move the show over. However, if WBD were to lose the NBA, they may just decide to end their NBA TV partnership with the NBA as well.

Having a poli-sci background, this is all so... incredibly... odd... As a candidate, you want your message in front of as many people as possible, and their reach is severely limited with just one cable channel (albeit, every network will run a highlight reel). Glancing at the link quickly, I did not see anything from CNN that they will remove the paywall to be able to stream (Note to CNN- that would be a smart thing to do).

Second debate is slated for ABC (interesting choice, as former president Trump is currently suing ABC News and George Stephanopoulos) which does not limit reach as much as cable, but still just one channel.

I am very interested in seeing what the other networks run against these debates.

My guess is that CNN will join ABC and make the debate(s) available to others. Nothing is gained by maintaining exclusivity for the sake of ratings.

As far as other networks counter-programming; despite being a re-match of 2020, I can't see anything being of interest that could draw viewers away from watching the debate(s).

I thought that it be Stadium since Jerry owns Stadium that he bought the stake from Sinclair for White Sox, Bulls, & Blackhawks. I didn't think that Standard General would buy the rights for the White Sox, Bulls & Blackhawks guessing that is coming from Soo Kim.

The Sun-Times ran a story about this yesterday.

If I’m understanding correctly, Standard will invest (in the RSN) and help with distribution while Stadium will provide the content (and handle other operational matters).

That said, it ‘appears’ that Stadium will be converted into the aforementioned RSN that will air White Sox, Bulls & Blackhawk games. At least that’s how it sounds…

It's interesting that they went with the sports reporter from WCVB instead of their NBC 10 Boston station. I'm just pointing this out here.

As @Georgie56 has pointed out, Funayama has covered previous Olympics, so it isn't unusual to be asked back despite working at a non-NBC station. It's a win-win situation.... WCVB has someone in Paris covering the Olympics on NBC's dime and NBC adds an experienced Olympics reporter to the roaster.

Why does the article say that wcvb is an NBC affiliate when it's an ABC affiliate?

    A simple mistake...

There's an article that says NBC would air 2 primetime games a week during the season.  Would that mean a Sunday Night double header or 2 games spread out during the week on NBC?

The primetime games would have to air during the week given NBC has college football on Saturday nights (Big 10 Saturday Night) and of course... SNF on Sunday during the Fall. Once football is over, they could then mix things up. The prospect of NBC airing sports 3 (or 4) nights a week would be interesting to say the least...

  11. NBC slashes space at NBC Tower [Chicago], extends lease to 2040

Not a huge surprise they're cutting back space, but I do wonder if this means the proposed plan to create a combined newsroom (for WMAQ/WSNS/NBC Sports Chicago) on the 2nd floor have been cut. It would be unfortunate if it has.

  12. Some news and notes...

Fox 32 is looking for a new meteorologist to replace Tim McGill (who is no longer with the station).

Gabriella Premus is returning [to the station] in a new role on GDC.

Matt Piacente stepped down as VP, News Director in late February due to personal reasons.

CNN only averaged 900,000 viewers in primetime for Super Tuesday, with 938,000 in the marquee 10pm ET hour. Comparing the numbers to all the other channels including broadcast networks, how could CNN, once seen as the election go-to network, end up in the last place, not even passing one million viewers??

Thompson has acknowledged that most people (when it comes to politics) have gravitated towards channels that align with their political beliefs (i.e.. FNC or MSNBC) and aren't interested in getting a 'nonpartisan' viewpoint from CNN.

This has Weigel, the CBS indies and the Fox Plus stations written all over it, along with Scripps just going by a raw eyeball of where it would air in NFL markets (Green Bay it'll likely be WACY for sure, likely KMCI for Kansas City, WCIU for Chicago and WMLW for Milwaukee).

I wouldn't be surprised if WFLD/WPWR makes a play for this (rather than WCIU). They're looking to add/launch new content (particularly sports-related content) and GMFB would be a perfect fit.

Update on the 11am hour, Wolf Blitzer is anchoring under the "CNN Newsroom" brand, was sort of opening "The Bulletin" would launch but I guess that'll be after Brown returns from maternity leave. Also with it's move to 11am, I guess that means the 3pm hour will remain with News Central for the foreseeable future.

They wouldn't launch 'The Bulletin' with Wolf if the show is Pamela's. Honesty, they may not launch 'The Bulletin' at all if they're looking to cut cost and same some $$$. That said, I wouldn't be surprised when Pamela comes back, they stick with 'CNN Newsroom with...'

Glad that News Central didn't get reduced to 2 hrs. No reason to do so given it performs well (relatively speaking).

I was surprised to see that they add with Wolf Blitzer since this is temporary show

Since a rotation of people isn't anchoring the 11A hr., it makes sense to add Wolf's name even if the show is just a placeholder. I see it as being consistent across the board more than anything.

Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos are quite different in personality, interests, demeanor, affect, etc and have been number 1 for years.  Gayle King and Charlie Rose were pretty dissimilar but helped CBSTM rise steadily.  You don't need people who are carbon copies of one another.  Your argument that the three on CNN never truly seemed interested in making the show work nor supporting each other is not a factual one. Poppy and Kaitlan were and are close friends; their chemistry has always been evident. Don may have been an issue but could have been replaced with someone else from inside or outside the network.

It's not about people being carbon copies, it's more about putting together individuals that have some level of respect toward each other or at the very least, a connection (whether it be sports, family, etc...) to build on. There was no debate that Robin and George and Gayle and Charlie had 'something.'

Just being colleagues and 'hoping for the best' isn't enough to make things work.

For example, if Don is the centerpiece, then you surround him with people he can relate with and respect. It's great Poppy and Kaitlan are friends, but this wasn't a 2-person show. Simply put, the three of them together just didn't make sense from the start and by their own accord, they said.. "the show immediately struggled, with the original trio of anchors — Harlow, Kaitlan Collins and Don Lemon — noticeably lacking on-air chemistry and reports of infighting."

Had more thought (from top to bottom) been put into CNN This Morning, maybe things would have turned out differently....

Bit of a shame.  I may be in the minority, but I think the first incarnation of CNN This Morning with Poppy Harlow, Don Lemon, and Kaitlan Collins was a quality product that just needed time.  The three of them each brought something -- Poppy as a longtime anchor with a business acumen, Kaitlan as an incisive political questioner, and Don as an older guy attuned to social issues with an ability to humanize. Yes, Lemon stuck his foot in his mouth one too many times, but in the three of them you really had an ensemble of three smart anchors with different yet complementary skills.  When there wasn't off-camera acrimony or awkward on-camera blunders, the three actually did have good TV chemistry.  To be clear, I'm not saying they should've kept Don.  Just lamenting the show's potential, had things worked properly.

Firing Don and plucking Kaitlan off was a one-two punch to the show.  Then it never got the new set it was promised.  Then they decided to return to a stale two-anchor format, and plopped in Phil Mattingly who has a goofy sense of humor and a great political acumen but is still somewhat awkward at the anchor desk and plays too much "inside baseball" when asking questions during his political interviews, which works for a midday show but not for morning.  The morning warmth disappeared from the show and it started to feel like any other two-anchor show of CNN's prior days.

Something else that's telling.  After deciding to move News Central up, they could have moved Poppy and Phil from the morning slot into the 10a-noon slot, either together or each with their own show.  Instead, they completely took them off the schedule, brought Acosta over from the weekend, and gave Pamela her own show.  Apparently someone decided Poppy and Phil have had enough.

No amount of time could have saved the first incarnation of CNN This Morning. Don, Poppy and Kaitlan were (are) polar opposites of each other and never truly seemed interested in making the show work nor supporting (uplifting) each other in any way from the beginning.

Of course building chemistry takes time, but everyone has to be willing to do the work and I never got that from them. It was a pain to watch.

  18. They should have moved Mary Kay to weekends and promoted Robb to weekdays (at 4P) given her current semi-retired status. I can't see many people being interested in taking on double-duty on weekends (WFLD's Mark Strehl being the exception).

Not sure why they just didn't go back to 4A. They have a new executive producer for GDC too and when they posted that job, they mentioned a 5-hr block (5-10A) not a 5 1/2 hr. one. Guess they changed their minds at some point.

My guess is that she moves to a reporting/fill-in anchor role. They're in dire need of reporters between 9a-4p. Dane has been the lone reporter covering the late morning/midday shift since Sally left.

Not sure all these changes were warranted, but not surprised they moved Terrance to a later shift. He's a stronger #2 to Scott than Anthony is/was.

Very interesting choice for co-anchor. I’m pretty sure NFL Sunday films in LA so he’ll be doing the trek back to NYC weekly.

Curt is going to divide his time between NYC and LA during the NFL season. That said, I wouldn't be surprise if the bigger goal is to resurrect Good Day Live with Curt and Rosanna. Otherwise, this move doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Funny, I actually just came here to make the same observation that the the AM and PM versions seem to have almost entirely dropped the stand-ups that were meant to define the show in favor of anchors stationed at a desk.  Bit of a shame, in my opinion.  I think Licht was onto something -- the stand-ups did give the show more of an active feel that differentiated it from the rest of the day's desk-based programming.

I can't understand why they fiddle with something that isn't broken. I wouldn't be surprised if they abandon (phase out) News Central at some point.

    Quick FYI-

I caught bit of their 75th Anniversary Special today and they mentioned (toward the end of the program) that they're turning one of the sound stages on the 2nd fl. into a huge newsroom combining the news-gathering resources of WMAQ-NBC 5, Telemundo Chicago and NBC Sports Chicago thus bringing everything 'under one roof.'

No word if they're going to move the entire operation of NBC Sports Chicago to the Tower as well, but it would make sense to do so.

??? The entire purpose of a reporter doing an outdoor stand up is to have them at the scene or a related location.

On local news you don't see a reporter standing on a random street in the Bronx in front of nothing to talk about a shooting on Long Island.  Exactly.

I would argue that it's the equivalent of being in studio/the newsroom, but instead, they're outside. For example, WFLD has often had reporters right outside the studio doing standups instead of 'at the scene' or in studio. I want to say WMAQ has done the same over the years (i.e.. having someone live right outside the NBC Tower). It's not as uncommon as it may seem.

At the end of the day, what's important is that the news/stories these reporters are reporting on is accurate, true, informative, etc.. and not necessarily where/what place they are saying it from.
