I hate localized coverage because satellite viewers can't receive it. Also, if they had enough staff to produce continuous live programming, why not air it to the entire country?

Agree. I would think the target demo of TWC viewers would want to see this type of coverage, whether they live in the affected area or not. It's why they are tuning into a niche channel....

Repetition is pretty high, but it's not a canned loop at least.  All of the blocks have different content, and some have different top stories.  So it's a mix.  That being said I felt exhausted by the end of it all, so yeah.  They must be getting fierce competition from WPHL (and this is probably the answer to the question of whether Nexstar goes in-house with their news - they clearly have a good thing going)

Here's a compilation of the new format.  Judge for yourself.

Wow. Interesting format. I will say the 10 minutes are good 10 minutes. But I don't see most people sticking through more than 1 or 2 segments considering the repetition. Are they hoping to train viewers to tune in at any point in the hour to get all the news the need without feeling compelled to start watching from the top of the show?

If I were them, I'd have at least 2/6 of the 10 min blocks be substantially different so that viewers who do want to watch more than 10 min, actually get something out of it. But hey, if they find this works, good for them!

TEGNA is going to be sold sometime soon which I think will be Byron Allen as TEGNA doesn't want Soo Kim with Apollo/Standard General, since the board doesn't like Soo Kim and his takeover and not getting his choices on the board of TEGNA I wonder if Soo would sell his stake in TEGNA if Byron Allen if he is the winning bidder of TEGNA?

I think the way it works is that if an entity is approved to buy a public company, all the current shareholders are forced to sell so the new owner owns the company 100%.

  4. It's not a complete overhaul. Non-news junkies wouldn't immediately notice a difference. It's just an evolved look for some various graphic elements. I've already seen some of the "updated" look on KGW.

As if the drama can't get any bigger, TVNewser is reporting that Brian Williams is looking to leave his 11 p.m. slot.

    Move timeslots or leave MSNBC?

Question- Does Gray hub master control for their stations? NY or TX to be exact? This is what happened on Saturday in Fargo when they tried going to Jeopardy...

Or is it just a misfire over at KVLY?

That looks like their playlist had the wrong source or satellite wasn't tuned to the right spot.

Attempted break-in at Fox 29 at around 5AM - no injuries reported and a man is in custody.

I don't think that should have led the show, but whatever.

I'm actually more curious about the security guards. I'm not familiar with their building but Google street view makes it look like it's a standalone facility. I can understand a large shared building having security, but private security just just for a station? Is this the norm in the top large markets? A temporary things?

KTTV is out for blood with the Michaela hire. That is a huge get! I'm a KTLA guy, but I give a tip of the hat to KTTV.

I don't follow LA too closely but am curious, in what way is this a "get" for KTTV? Because she was popular years ago at KTLA? Were other LA stations clamoring to hire her or was KTTV the only one interested? Was KTLA even interested in getting her back at all or have they "moved on"?

Also, it seemed the camera on Skycam 9 isn't as good as the camera on KTLA's helicopter, or the operator wasn't able to adjust the camera properly for night operations.

I've watched some of the LA choppers night time protest coverage on Youtube and have been really impressed with the quality, clarity, and brightness of the cameras at night. Must be expensive special cameras compared to other markets.

Next up on the list of local stations doing the CBS Weekend News is KOIN 6 of Portland, OR. And the host is Jeff Gianola.

    https://www.koin.com/news/jeff-gianola-hosting-cbs-weekend-news-from-koin-6-studios/

I don't say this much about people, but he is one of those very old school anchors who has not changed with this times. I wonder how the anchors get chosen. CBS or station's choice?

BTW, does anyone know how the production actually happens? Does CBS staff produce the show remotely and then send the content (video/graphics/script) to the local station to load into their system and then produce out of their control room? Or is just a studio camera feed from the station sent to a CBS control room and then the show is assembled there?

  11. Can someone explain why/how Soo Kim and Standard General board members would benefit Tegna? I've heard each sides take, but I'm not educated enough to really understand what is going on. Can anyone here give an impartial summary? Seems like many here have a feeling of not liking the direction of Tegna, so any new board member is good....? Or is there something specific Soo Kim/Standard General can bring to the table?

IMHO here's what I have noticed about Norah from the very beginning:  She doesn't smile enough.  The old adage goes, "It's not what you say, but how you say it."  I'm not saying she needs to smile while delivering sad stories and the like, (this is gonna hurt and will sound cruel, not trying to be sexist, but I need to be honest) ....but she needs to lose the RBF.  If you don't know what RBF is.... google it.  She's a very good looking woman, but I don't think her expressions while delivering serious stories are very inviting.  It's almost like she has a scowl on her face.

There are plenty of female anchors out there who can deliver a heavy story without looking into the camera like you spilled purple grape juice on their new white couch.

Norah is not one of them.

There may be a tinge of truth to this, but I'd love to hear women's perspective. Maybe as a society people have a subconscious preference for the way we'd like to see a woman appear on TV, and this comment is a manifestation of that. I'm not saying the preference is invalid or not ok, but I've never seen anyone comment on this site about any male anchor not smiling enough. 🙄

  13. Here is an example and explanation of KGW's "social distancing" at the start of their 5pm show Monday. They have also ditched their usual 7pm entertainment show for a half hour of responding to viewer questions. They have this new thing as well where people can text in questions to their newsroom phone number.
