Nancy O’Dell before she was famous. A 1992 report from her at WCBD. Dan Ashley is one of the news anchors.

Not only did Nancy O'Dell became a nationally-famous entertainment reporter, but also Dan Ashley moved to the Bay Area's ABC7 KGO San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose. I didn't know Nancy O'Dell went by Nancy Humphries, nor did I know Dan Ashley anchored in the South Carolina low country before going to the San Francisco Bay Area.

This has the longest recording of the KARE/KUSA 9 Country / 11 Country closing theme I've come across so far

Actually I beg to differ at the 28:02 mark

Although I remember this theme very well. It was first used on channel 9 in Denver (KBTV/KUSA) during its ABC affiliate days. Mike Landess and Ed Sardella delivered the news, Stormy Rottman and Bill Kuster did weather, and Mike Nolan did sports. I especially love the KUSA 9 Country News Opens, which featured the golden pipes of Mr. ABC himself Ernie Anderson.

And staying in Chicago, this 1990s WGN compilation opens with three news/weather promos, including a pre-launch promo for the WGN Morning News:

These WGN promos look like they were produced 1993-1995, when WGN became a WB affiliate in 1995.

Phone call for NMSA - it’s confirmed KRDO used the WRAL 1982 Theme!

Here's another video taken from KRDO ABC13 in 1987. It's a commercial for Blick's Sporting Goods in Colorado Springs, and the music sounds awfully familiar

Cue the video below to the 2:16 mark. You'll hear the news theme that was used on these two stations

    • WNAC Newsroom 7 Boston (now WHDH) for their Election 1980 coverage
    • WJET ABC24 in 1986 for their Action News

This is a surprise. You never expect Ernie Anderson to announce a newscast open on a CBS affiliate, because of his famous work with ABC stations. I will tell you this though, the set looks nice and the open animation is good.

On an actual ABC station in 1991 - rival WSB Channel 2 Action News - Now THAT was more like it.

They also did the graphics that KMGH introduced in 1998.

SHOOT! Your'e Right! That makes KMGH ABC7 the THIRD Denver client of TVbD

    • KWGN was Denver client #1 in the 80s until about 1993
    • KUSA was the Denver client #2 from 1992 about mid-2000s
    • KMGH was Denver client #3 from 1998 until unknown

It wouldn't be TVbD would it?

Doubtful it's TVbD because I saw the KCNC news open (1995-97), and it doesn't look like TVbD to me. This was when after NBC sold KCNC to CBS.

The only clients in Denver I know were KWGN and KUSA. KWGN was TVbD's first client in Denver, which began in the 1980s when Channel 2 was an independent station before the WB in 1995 (now as CW affiliate). Then, KUSA became TVbD's second Denver client. This was after 9NEWS moved to its new (and current) building in 1992, and before/after it switched from ABC to NBC in 1995.

  8. LOTS of Discoveries from the KMGH 1983 video during Channel 7's CBS days

Ann Wade's former co-anchor Kris Long (at the 15:22 mark) and a promo for Robin Robinson (at the 10:41 mark). Little did we know that - in 1987 - Long and Robinson would be reunited in Chicago at WFLD. That was when FOX32 launched it's own news department in 1987.

A much younger Kim Christiansen (at the 12:02 mark) talking about the ski event alongside the KIMN radio mascot. That was before 1984, when Christiansen went to KUSA 9NEWS (ABC affiliate at the time). She's currently working at KUSA to this day (as NBC9).

The first known instance of KMGH broadcasting 24 hours a day, but only FIVE days a week, by airing the then-new news program called CBS News Nightwatch (now the CBS Overnight News). No sign-off sequence here; just the outro of Cinema 7 going into the intro to CBS News Nightwatch. KMGH signed off on weekends back then. But now, KMGH (as ABC7) is on the air 24/7.

  9. "Six months later they were using the “9 Country” package that was carried over to WTCN when Gannett acquired them. I’d assume they debuted this package shortly after this was broadcast."

I think when Gannett bought KARE 11 in 1984 (WTCN at the time), it had taken that 9NEWS magic, and brought it to the Twin Cities. Here's what I mean by 9NEWS magic:

    • Reporter Andria Shaine - I didn't know Shaine was a 9NEWS reporter before being transferred to KARE 11 as reporter and morning anchor alongside John Bachman
    • The news theme music 9 Country - first used on KUSA (then KBTV) but also known as 11 Country when KARE played that music in their newscast. Both KUSA and KARE shared the same theme music
    • Joe Franzgrote - KUSA general manager got transferred to KARE 11 as THEIR GM
    • Talent with the same caliber as Landess & Sardella - Paul Magers and Diana Pierce
    • Great group of photojournalists and photographers - KUSA and KARE won accolades as NPPA station of the year
    • #1 in the Ratings - KUSA got out of the rating basement in 1976 (as KBTV and ABC), and so did KARE in the mid-80s. Gannett had ratings dominance in their cities.
    • Patriotic colors - red white and blue USA flag in their logos, graphics and animation. KUSA used it first, then KARE followed suit.

  10. A RARE TREAT from 1982 at KUSA in Denver (formerly KBTV and an ABC affiliate). This looks like the 6:00am morning edition of 9NEWS, which was just before ABC's Good Morning America (Joan Lunden & David Hartman at the time) came on the air at 7:00am

from the 0:00 mark to the 0:28 mark - the opening credits using the cut from It's All Right Here (Peters Communications version). It's the SAME cut that was also used on sister station KPNX in Phoenix.

from the 2:38 mark to the 3:12 mark - the closing credits with the cut from Peters' It's All Right Here that I've never heard before.

I've seen the 9NEWS opens and closes, which came from nighttime newscasts with Mike Landess and Ed Sardella, but never like this.

Footage from KRIV's old studios and holy moly..I can definitely understand why they got their new diggs off of the Southwest Freeway.

I'd like to point out two things about KRIV FOX26 news sets. For one thing, that KRIV set looked similar to the news set used by sister station WNYW FOX5 New York. Secondly, I noticed FOX26 done its own version of the Newsmat set, the chroma-keyed green screen new set used by rival station KTRK ABC13 in the 1980s.

  12.

WRTV 1989 promo. The music was used by KUSA around this time as an open bump. Production or network track?

Interesting there would be a Denver/Indianapolis Crossover with that music...This AND the WRTV 1990 news theme.

Both KMGH (which was CBS at the time) and WRTV are ABC affiliates, which used to be owned by McGraw Hill. Now, KMGH and WRTV are owned by Scripps, which is the company that used to own the now-defunct Rocky Mountain News newspaper.

KUSA (ABC at the time, now it's NBC) used that same music track for the 9NEWS tonight intro (

), and Channel 9 also used the WRTV 1990 News theme for it's 4PM local talk show Good Afternoon Colorado.

Even before ABC moved from KUSA to KMGH in 1995, it's interesting that KUSA would use theme music from rival KMGH's sister station in Indianapolis.

  13. TVPMM Vault recently uploaded the NBC Background Music Library 1970

When I clicked on Tabloid by Frank Denning (NBC Background Music -112), I knew it was the exact theme music heard on WTLV and other markets in the 1970s (mainly NBC affiliates).

  14. Those symphonic versions of the KCRA theme: I remember hearing it from 1984 to 1988 on KRDO Channel 13, the ABC affiliate in my hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado. I also recall the WFAA-like news opens, which had aerial footage and photos of KRDO anchors (with their signatures in the lower thirds), and it had that background music. Does anyone have those symphonic versions of "Where the News Comes First"?

  15. KMGH 1992 open, back in the CBS days, taking a cue from a certain ABC O&O.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOlzODsDklo

Clip from KMGH in 1988, including a clip of Midday Colorado with John Lindsey.

The address from the Midday Colorado video...

    Midday/ABC KMGH-TV

    P.O. Box 5007

    Denver, CO 80217

...and elements from the 1992 clip

Newsmat set, graphics, 7 logo animation

All from a few ABC O&O stations

They were both signs of KMGH going from CBS to ABC in September 1995

I just uploaded a video from my hometown ABC affiliate.

It was from Sunday, January 12, 1995

WJBF is the ABC affiliate for Augusta, GA (DMA #114). These are rare clips I just recently stumbled upon from an old VHS tape, rare as in there are no traces of any video from an Augusta station from the 1990s anywhere on the internet, and is probably one of the last recorded samples out there other than what the station has in their archives. This is also a rare recording from the station's "Spartan Radiocasting" days, a good 5 years before the station and it's sisters were purchased by Media General.

The video features an 11pm topical (during an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos), and 11pm weather tease, and then the full 11pm news open. The tape abruptly cuts off about half a minute after the open, as it was taped over. The video features Paul Herdtner (now at WDAF-TV) and the late and great Michelle Lima. The open montage has a brief shot of former mayor Bob Young at the anchor desk when he was weeknight anchor in the 1990s.

If anybody knows the name of the music (I've heard it before), please let me know! :)

It's Prime News by Jerome Gilmer, a composer based out of Denver, CO. Gilmer did some theme music for soon-to-be ex-NBC flagship station, and soon-to-be CBS O&O, KCNC Channel 4.
