They had enough money to spring for a good news package (Non-Stop's First News), and an experienced anchorman (former KMOX-TV anchor Steve Schiff). They clearly had high hopes.
Don't know how many stations were still making "There Goes That News Van, Again" promos in the late 90s; but KVBC decided that the 1998 public wouldn't find silent home film reels too dated.

If only GE had held on and invested in them like they did with KCNC. It seems like they were in the process of doing that, but then the sale to Knight-Ridder...
Lottery numbers themselves are public domain, so 6 will still be able to show the numbers.
Fox 29 probably fought hard to get the drawings, I doubt they were the lottery's first choice. Aside from that and WPXI, all the other incumbent stations kept the drawings. WNEP, for example, still has them. They've been very good to the lottery; they air every drawing, including the multistate games, live. Most stations air Powerball and Mega Millions on tape delay.
One has to wonder: was WEWS (which also called their newscasts TV-5 Eyewitness News) used as a middleman to get ABC's golden voice to a non-ABC affiliate?

I just had a bit of epiphany about WVIT's 1989 theme. The instrumentation and melody is very reminiscent of Michael Randall's work around that time. Just a hunch, but I think it's a good one.
