  1. KTLA seems to be having a meltdown right now. At exactly 6 PM, a studio shot came on air showing the anchors getting ready without any graphics on screen. At first it didn't seem like they knew they were on the air, but after a few seconds they were staring at a monitor looking confused. After a few seconds, they cut to Two and a Half Men, which is what they have been showing for the past 13 minutes now. Stay tuned...

  2. KFMB has finally updated their Chopper 8 "beauty shots" for their helicopter opens. Here's one of the several fast shots they show.

And no, this isn't another KFMB "rumor." Back to your regular scheduled programming.

  3. Word around the San Diego Harbor, is that KNSD NBC 7 will be getting some new "weather equipment" and possible a weather truck like the rest of the NBC O&O's. Promos are being shot today, truck is currently being build and will be here "soon."

In other news... don't be surprised to see the 10 News Breaking WeatheRate+ Tracker 10000 HD Mobile Weather Prius, after NBC gets their truck.

  4. KFMB just aired a bizzare, yet puzzling new promo. It shows a coffee machine pouring hot coffee into a KFMB mug, in the background you can hear the AM anchors. Then towards the end it says "Were brewing something new, STAY TUNED"

I first saw that yesterday, and also just now tonight. Very puzzling indeed. Wonder what's going to happen?

  5. I get the need to plug the show, but it's excessive. Then again, everything KGTV has been doing recently is excessive...

    The long-gone Rosie. They'll send Raven-Symone instead.

Running at least 5 morning show promos each commercial break...sigh...

Seems like they also love doing the new "weather center computer" shot during the 7 pm news. Wouldn't be surprised when they start doing shots with the studio door as a backdrop.

  6. Why do they need more [new] live trucks? It's not like they have a big staff of reporters anyway. When Corsini took over at GM, I thought that he would give them a chopper. Maybe down the line?? but they would really have Southern California covered if KSWB had its own bird...

Re. KNSD: Several weeks ago, I stumbled across one of the social media pages of a photog at 7, and he had posted a pic of the former newschopper 7/39. Reminiscing about the good ol' days, I suppose, but no indication that they would be getting their own chopper back.

Do you know anything about the helicopter sharing agreement? like for example, can a station get out of the agreement at any time or do they have to give an X-Amount of time notice, or are they bound by to stay for a certain amount of time (i.e. one year, two years, six months, etc.)?

Yeah they already have 6 or so live trucks, plus the lil' Subaru car, so it's a waste of money to get more especially since they are using Dejero most of the time.

I don't know much about the helicopter sharing agreement, wish I knew more though. I would think they are in a contract, but I'm not positively sure on that. All of the SD stations are using 8's feed, right? If I were to guess any station that would drop the feed, it would probably be KUSI since they can't afford a new set and are spending money left and right fixing news trucks and buying new ones. Unrelated, but I still remember from 5 years ago when they showed a picture on the screen of their "SkyEye" chopper. It was a random picture of some random white Bell 206 helicopter with the works KUSI SkyEye Chopper put on the side in like Microsoft Paint or something lol. Just had to mention that.

  7. Still surprised that KSWB hasn't gotten a chopper from ACA/Welk. Makes perfect sense, but I guess no money with all of the live trucks they are purchasing. Maybe KNSD would get one since they are moving to Kearny Mesa close to Montgomery Field.

  8. The A-Star is provided as a replacement at no extra charge when the problem is on the platform equipment. The cost comes out of the pocket of Welk or Angel Air or whoever is the provider for Clearchannel / IHM or whoever owns former Metro now.

I bet N925tv has the answer to that.

I would think National Helicopter would pay for the rental of the A-Star from ACA. Maybe I'm missing something, but I doubt ACA would just give their helicopter at no charge, especially since they aren't affiliated as far as I know.

They're still using the A-Star today, quality and picture better than ever as always. Pic of the inside from Wednesday, shows the ACA logo on the door.

  9. KGTV is now jumping on the 4 pm "news" bandwagon... they just aired a promo for "The Now San Diego" premiering September 14th. It's going to be on at 4 pm. Let's see how long this lasts...

  10. KFMB's Chopper 8 crapped out again, they were using the Welk Aviation (Angel City Air) ex-Sky 2/9 Helicopter, once again. N29LW. I saw it flying above my place 2 times today. Hope it's permanent this time.

  11. Kai Goldberg made the move to KTLA from KCBS/KCAL. Today is his first day, tomorrow he will be on the air. He is replacing Jim Castillo, who left the station a few weeks back.

  12.

So the lil Subaru is the one that "Commuter Carl" drives? Do you know when the helicopter sharing agreement ends with all the stations? I can't imagine KNSD and KSWB being too happy with being in a helicopter sharing agreement in which the chopper is down constantly and/or the images/video is unreliable most of the time. I'm no expert in helicopters, but i've always wondered why the LA stations could use their choppers even when it was raining--yet here in SD, if there is some rain, Chopper 8 gets grounded.

Yes, they use the Subaru. In fact, it drove past my place here in Del Mar today on live tv this morning haha!

I wish I knew about the sharing agreement, but I hope it's soon. I think it has something to do with insurance or the pilots themselves. I know the LA ENG pilots, and they are the best of the best. Another point, all of the LA helicopters came down here yesterday during that pursuit that ended on the 5 in Del Mar. Chopper 8 was no where to be seen, and all of the SD stations were using LA chopper feeds. Chopper 8 was up and running yesterday, it flew past my place, so I have no idea why they didn't fly yesterday. ...

  13.

Last time I checked they had 3 trucks units 62 and 63 and the sat/eng combo. I got a shot of one of the old blue ones after it was sold last year. It was stripped of everything but the mast. It was on Robinson and Meade streets.

I will find that pic cuz it's pretty sad and funny.

Unit 5 used to be the North County car with MiniMicro. It's now a Dodge Caravan(?) I see it in NC and at the courthouse often. Pretty sure KGTV has mostly ditched "unit numbers" since most the cars no longer have VHF 2-way radios. Just the the instacams. The KGTV mini-mic's do not have the attached pre-amp/controller like the KFMB Sienna mini units.

I'm sure you have seen the Ch69 Suburau???

    Aint it cute???

Didn't know they had a sat truck. That pic sounds interesting, hope you can find it!

Do they have a base up in North County to keep the Dodge Caravan, or it's just assigned for service up there?

Yeah, I've seen Fox 5's cute lil' Subaru driving around, they use it in the mornings as well for the live traffic reports. Speaking of Fox 5, they've been really expanding their fleet over the past year or so. They have all of their trucks very nicely wrapped. As far as I know, they have 1 Sattelite/ENG truck, at least 4 regular ENG trucks, and the lil' Subaru. Now all they need is a helicopter. I'm getting dizzy from Chopper 8's feeds lol.

  14. Yeah it took several attempts to get the van in view!

I recall KGTV doesn't have too many live trucks, so this makes sense. Thanks once again everyone for solving this mystery!

  15.

A test unit, perhaps? I don't think KFMB has any Frontline Comm. trucks. It could be KNSD or KGTV. KNSD really needs a few new trucks.

Here's a pic I got of the unit, from yesterday. Sorry for the bad quality.

  16. I've noticed a new live truck driving around San Diego lately. It's a Nissan NV-HR truck, painted all black. It also has Frontline Communications decals on the sides of the truck. When I first saw it a few weeks ago, it didn't have these decals. Yesterday, it was at a breaking news situation, and I saw it parked there from Chopper 8 with the Frontline decals. Anybody know what station it belongs to? Did that station break a deal with Frontline to keep their decals on there?

  17. KTLA just announced that starting July 5th, they will be expanding their weekend morning news by 1 hour to 10am, Sunday's only. It will now run 6 - 10 am on Sunday. Saturday will be 6 - 9 am

  18. Shocking to hear this officially, Pat Brown at KGTV just announced that she is leaving, and where she goes next will be "undetermined." Also, Ashlee DeMartino is also leaving 10News in early June, to head to KSAZ.
