Providence, RI is NOT a sub 100 market (they're in DMA #53).

Correct, I did miss WLNE. In addition, I did miss a few other markets in my quest for glory and antagonism, which I also now included.

But to reiterate my point: If people are turning away, it's because the CONTENT of the broadcast -- the stories within the newscast and the way the new age MMJ are presenting the content. I am able to accept the argument of the CONTENT and PRODUCTION of the broadcasts being a part of declining ratings, even to go as so far as to allow a discussion of the social-media branding of the productions (I don't agree with that notion that social-media marketing they are using is inherently negative or hurting the stations to be honest, but it's worthy of a discussion).

But again, arguing to me that the music is in and of itself, a key factor of repulsion, that's a pretty superficial way of criticizing something that you could actually put a critical thought behind, IF you so chose to.

I'm a 20-something guy, and the way Tegna thinks my generation wants forced ingenuine shows that are irrelevant is not smart.   If I'm taking time to watch a newscast, I want a newscast with real substance.  And I'm saying that being as tech-savvy as anyone my age.

If you're taking the time to watch a newscast and you're in Generation Z (or Gen X/Millennial(GenY) like me), you're in the minority, according to a study by Oxford and Reuters Institute.

Absolutely agree again, and if there is ever a merger of the Internet and TV (ATSC 3.0 is an early indication that we may be heading in that direction), then the TV product must be high quality anyway in preparation for any eventuality.   In any case, it's never wrong to strive for the best possible product.

If Hearst is successful with producing a stellar gfx pkg and music, then Tegna can and should do better.

There are many fads in life, and I can guarantee you that "C Clarity" is one of those fads.   Is it any wonder why you still hear music pkgs like Signature, Primetime News, MCTYW, Eyewitness News, and others on-the-air decades after they were first introduced (albeit with updates in many cases)?  The composers of those pkgs used their talent to create iconic music packages that have survived the passage of time.  "C Clarity" lacks any memorable element whatsoever.

I've been meaning to say this for a while now:

There are many things to argue about with these station groups: inherent editorial biases, incompetent newsrooms/production, even graphical presentation can be considered. But if you're simply griping about news music -- arguably about a total of 30 seconds to 1 minute of a 30-minute broadcast -- you're overreacting.

Now while C Clarity is not a traditional "news" package, but it's not a bad package by any stretch of the imagination. Granted those longer lived packages are synonymous with the stations they are with, they are aged DO age, and they show their age. The music is fine. It's just modern, and everyone loves to hate anything modern.  Just imagine if everyone was still using the music they used in 1970 -- every market would be suffering with a WJZ 1987 - 2017. sound.

As an aside: NONE of those packages you mention are widely used: Signature is in use by six stations nationwide, all in sub-100 TV markets, Primetime News is used by one broadcast and a handful of cable stations, and we all know who uses MCTYW. Eyewitness News is the exception, which most likely occurs because it's a staple in the three largest markets in the country on stations O&O'd by The Mouse, except of course the one who uses MCTYW and that weird Fresno market 🤷🏽‍♀️. The ONLY other broadcast stations still using EWN are WLNE Providence, WJRT Flint,  WBAY Green Bay and also a handful of sub-100 DMA stations.

I guess "Wake Up Central" as in, KTHV is central to waking up.

Question: Who is number one in the AMs in Little Rock?

"Wake Up [Insert Region]" is the TEGNA name for all of their new revamped morning shows. Wake Up West Texas - KIDY/KXVA; Wake Up Washington (now Get Up DC)- WUSA; WHAS11 Wake Up -- all TEGNA creations, with the same (general) graphics created by TEGNA creative.

I’ve never been to the Hampton Roads, but I remember reading two years ago about Crystal Harper and her battle with cancer. I must say how proud I am of her for surviving, and her departure is sad because I feel she really captured the hearts of the Hampton Roads. Good Luck with her future endeavors.

Craig's return had nothing to do with her departure. The opportunity he "couldn't pass up" upon return, outside of joining the weather center was being named Director of Audience Engagement for the station.

Instead, Crystal has taken a job with Booz-Allen-Hamilton in PR, an frequent target of media personalities who want a change in scenery (plus, she's military so that probably helped too.)

  5.

WTVF's (Nashville) Dan Kennedy is joining Hampton Roads' WVEC in July. He'll be the anchor for the station's 13News Now Daybreak.

I wonder if someone's leaving or are they just adding a third anchor. If someone's leaving, it couldn't be Ashley since she *just* moved to the anchor seat...

  6. Sooo... this popped up on WUSA's website this morning when I tried to read a story with my ad blocker engaged... the "buy an ad removal pass" leads to Google Contributor:

Each page without ads costs $0.01 ($1 will buy you access to 100 pages without ads). You load your pass with $5. When your balance drops below $1 it will top-up by $5 automatically. The money from your ad removal pass purchase is given to the creators of WUSA9.com (after a small portion is retained by Google to cover the cost of running the service)

Checked a few other TEGNA sites... of the few I checked, KUSA had the same setup (it actually popped up on their homepage).

  7. VARTV.com reported on its Twitter page today that WJAX/WFOX (Jacksonville) reporter Deanna Bettineschi will be joining WAVY in Hampton Roads.

Meanwhile, WENY (Elmira) sports director Jenna Harner will be joining Buffalo's WIVB.

    http://buffalonews.com/2018/04/02/ch-4-hires-new-sports-reporter-from-elmira-to-replace-shepherd/

Is it just me, or has WAVY had a lot of turnover as of late? Like, I know reporters come and go, but WAVY used to be a stable market choice, and a lot has changed around there...

  8. WJLA meteorologist Josh Knight helped out WBFF about a year or so ago in their time of need. Not to mention, the occasional fill-in WX gigs during network morning shows, they usually poach from the O&O's. Similar thing happened when Paul Magers did an impromptu SR when Muhammad Ali passed.

Unrelated but while I'm thinking of it, are network O&O's basically considered de-facto bureaus for their parent network? Not talking about NYC, DC, Chicago, or LA, but say Raleigh for WTVD/ABC, Austin for KTBC/FOX, etc?

The short answer is yes, although in most some top markets, the networks will still operate a de-facto separate operation for true network level correspondents.

The example that comes to mind is in Miami, where NBC has an O&O in WTVJ, but still operates a separate NBC News Miami Bureau.

  9. It should just sever the umbilical cord with KOLD and have newscasts of its own like it sort of used to, and KNAZ should at least have the same subchannels that KPNX has even if they're not going to have newscasts of their own anytime soon, which I think they should.

TEGNA is making money off of the station (through sales) while not having to actually pay for the operational costs of the station. I doubt they want to change that formula.

  10. For the month of February, WTKR won the 5:00 timeslot for the first time since 1994 (before the station ditched the Eyewitness News branding for the short-lived TV-3 News branding)

That's pretty damn interesting... most of my child and adult life they've been last place. Combine the 3pm Ellen lead-in with Barbara and Les, two of the longest tenured anchors in the market...that's pretty damn good.

On the flip side...what does this mean for the other two stations?

  11. Who wants to sign off on this letter?

    Dear TEGNA;

Your purchase of KFMB is a win for you, because the station ratings are tops in the market. I'm sure you've seen their revenue projections, budgets, and more. Yes, your company changing the business model and doing new things that are consider ["innovative"] However, one would like to question some of the changes you've made with Belo Stations when you purchase them several years ago.

Please, listen because these are just some coaching points. STOP FUCKING UP GOOD STATIONS. You've gotten many gems tv stations and you have turn them into BIRD DEW meaning SHIT! Let take a look at KXTV, WWL, KENS, KING, KHOU and including your own stations that were apart of the Gannett umbrella WXIA, KSDK, WTSP, WUSA, KVUE. Please, don't let your consultants gut KFMB like you've done other stations.

Please, once again STOP FUCKING UP GOOD STATIONS AND DON'T FUCK UP KFMB! We know your track record, and it not pretty. Here hoping you don't cut Barbara Lee Edwards' salary, because we know it always awesome sauce when you can make millions and the talent has to take a cut and etc. Again, DON'T FUCK UP THIS ONE, the reason why? Well let take a look at WWL 4 in New Orleans. Let see if they will be #1 in time slots in February.

    Sincerely,

    Those that give a damn-

    Yeah, no.

  12. From Hampton Roads: WVEC morning and noon anchor Andre Senior is leaving the station in mid-December...

...meanwhile in Pittsburgh, WPXI weekend morning anchor Brittny McGraw is heading to Roanoke's WSLS 10 soon.

  13. If they want to do a more laid back newscast (maybe tieless) for Friday's fine. But not with any of these formats. Keep it the same but maybe a little "looser" with music perhaps?

I thought the format was OK, just some of the production was wayyyyyy off. The music playing throughout was probably the worst element of it. It overpowered everything during the news blocks. The weird camera angles were weird too.

  14. Certainly sounds like it based on one quote in FTV Live's article on it (emphasis original)

    http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/9/22/tegna-blowing-up-the-news-in-norfolk

Somewhere I think Jim Kincaid and Terry Zahn are doing rapid spinning in their graves.

It really wasn't like what FTV made it seem to be. I watched it, and what it appeared to be reaching for is the "Next" format, or a newsmagazine. Still had an A-block, weather and sports. It still has kinks, but it could work.

I just wish folks wouldn't take the sensationalism/over the top analytics from the FTVLive tabloid so seriously.

  15. WUSA morning anchor Mike Hydeck joining WVIT effective October. Also leaving the WUSA morning team is Allyson Rae who will be going to WBBH.

Lately I've seen Larry Miller fill in for Mike and it was already announced that Miri Marshall will be taking over for Allyson.

So in the better part of a year or so, the morning team at WUSA has essentially been 100% replaced. Jan Jeffcoat moved to mornings, with Andrea Roane demoted to noon/evening fill-in duties, plus what I mentioned above.

Not just with the team, but they tried to switch up the format IIRC a few months ago by using the Great Day Washington set too...

  16. KBMT sent a single MMJ out to the field to cover Hurricane Harvey buy herself

    http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2017/8/28/taking-tegna-to-task

I mean, I wouldn't necessarily blame TEGNA at large for that one... sounds like the ND at KBMT was just being stupid/cheap, especially considering they could have literally gotten help from anywhere, including WWL across the border.

Maybe 'BMT still thinks they're a London station. -shrugs-

  17. While we're on the subject of changes... it looks like TEGNA is in the process of changing the look of all of their station's mobile sites as well. I noticed it this morning when I was perusing WVEC's page on my phone.

For an example of the difference you can look at WFAA 's mobile site with the new look vs KIII with the old (the links will take you to their mobile page).

They have to be going through the slowest graphics change ever...
