That is the big rumor I've now read from multiple sources...

Nexstar owns KXAN and WGN, where there‘s now an opening for another meteorologist since Tom left and Demetrius got bumped to nights from the midday shift. Maybe there?

KXAN Chief Meteorologist David Yeomans is leaving after Wednesday

Their story says he’s going somewhere with “very different weather,” which would seem to indicate a station in the Northeast.

WKYC's Hollie Strano made her first appearance on-air this morning since her drunk driving incident about 3 months ago:

She's been demoted to weekend mornings (plus Mondays and Tuesdays at 7PM).

Shocked they’re being her back. That was a high-profile, well-covered DWI with shocking video. Stations have dumped talent arrested for DWIs far less severe.

  4. 2.5 months after they moved to a temporary set right after Thanksgiving and almost an entire month past their previously stated debut target of 1/15, they are set to finally debut this thing on Monday. Main anchor Daniella Guzman posted the news on Facebook this afternoon. The set is apparently “sleek” and “cool” with huge screens that require lots of standing and walking. All her words, not mine. She has a cheesy, totally staged — but kinda cute — teaser post on her Facebook page that only shows the new studio’s green screen, nothing more, in case anyone wants to check it out.

  5. One of their reporters posted this sneak peak on social media yesterday to mark KPRC’s 75th birthday. I realize it’s not done yet, but it’s kinda … underwhelming. Too much gray. As of now, at least, it’s a big step down from the not-very-old set it’ll be replacing. Also … based upon the multiple boxes, please tell me they’re not really ordering some set pieces from Amazon?!?

  6. As you can see from the FB post below, KPRC moved its newscasts to the newsroom beginning today at noon while a new set is being built. It looks pretty cramped, but the newsroom provides a decent backdrop.

Curious to see what’s in the works. Their current set debuted in 2016 when the station moved into its new building and has held up really well, with no significant signs of wear.

One issue they have had recently is that their livestreaming show from 7a-10a has a unique format and often has kinda funky setups. Same goes for the new 10a newscast. They do a super-tight shot of the anchors for that show that shows almost none of the desk and stick a small, lucite table between the anchors. For interviews, they often put stools in front of the 3x3 video wall instead of using the designated interview area.

  7. This Tulsa setup is clearly a test by a very desperate Sinclair. If they’re willing to torpedo a newsroom in a market that size, the sky’s the limit for them. They’ve obviously done the math and know that, even with lower ratings, they’ll come out ahead due to the cost savings from shedding all those salaries. I could totally see them doing something similar in Austin, for example, where KEYE has been in the cellar forever, moving production an hour south on I-35 to the WOAI/KABB studios in San Antonio.

Unless Tegna has a duopoly partner (like in Denver & Seattle), I don't think the networks they're affiliated with would be too happy pre-empting network shows to air a local ballgame.  The network contracts are more iron-clad now and don't really allow for deviation unless it's a local news or weather emergency.  Not to mention all of the retransmission consent dollars the networks have their hand in.

And this includes stations like WBNS, who used to openly flaunt the OSU Buckeyes during basketball season, proudly pre-empting CBS shows to air an ESPN+ game in primetime.

They’ve got a duopoly in Houston too. KTBU airs a straight feed of Tegna’s Quest, which used to be on a KHOU (CBS) subchannel. (KTBU has aired MLS games.) A total waste of the airwaves, especially when there are a lot of syndicated shows — shows that would have higher viewership — that either aren’t shown at all in the market or are slotted overnight. No one airs Seinfeld, for example. And Court Cam, Funny You Should Ask (2x) and iCrime are relegated to 2a-4a on KPRC (NBC).

  9. Competitor KTVT gave up on that timeslot during the early days of coronavirus. And earlier this year, KPRC/Houston killed their 4:30a newscast allegedly due to a producer shortage. They’re also now airing 2 Early Todays. Not aware of any others, although I’m sure there are some more. In both markets you still have the Fox O&O starting at 4a though.

  10. KPRC/Houston has added a third hour to its Saturday morning news: 6-7, 8-9 and now 9-10 as of this past weekend.

Also, they will be replacing Dr. Phil at 3 p.m. with a 3 p.m. newscast this fall.

These on-air additions — plus recently expanding their morning online stream from 7-8 a.m. to 7-9 a.m. — are all happening after they canceled their 4:30 a.m. newscast earlier this year over what they alleged at the time was a shortage of hiring and keeping producers.

KTRK has always had different pairs anchors for different weeknight broadcasts aside from 6&10pm. Years ago, Erik Barajas and Illona Carson used to anchor Eyewitness News at 4pm, Melanie and Art Rascon anchored Live at 5, Dave Ward and Gina Gaston anchored the 6&10pm. They broke EWN at 6 into two half hours as a stepping stone to push Dave Ward out, which was a huge mistake because Dave built that station to what it was.

Brhe Berry left Channel 13 months ago.

The station isn't bloated. In fact compared to a few years ago, is grossly understaffed and steaming stretches the station too thin. They don't have an investigative reporter, or a full time sports reporter other than the Eyewitness Sports director, they don't have a morning traffic anchor, Action 13 reporter, or 13's HealthCheck reporter either. They skip the sports segment at 6&10pm all the time now after the station forced Bob Slovak out.

    KTRK doesn’t do morning traffic?!?

The 3 shot with the weather anchor looks pretty good actually - the horizontal light bars make the set look more expansive than it is. A change of pace from other sets that are too bathed in white, have that stuck in a corner feel.

If they removed 'CBS AUSTIN NEWS' logo taking over 4 screens on the 2 shot it would be a lot easier on the eyes.

I think the last 6 months a number of sets are breaking that TEGNA 2013 set mold that's become stale, making better use of dimension and depth, and using a fuller sized desk to make the talent more professional.

This. They have to do something about the logo being everywhere. How did they not catch that earlier? Or did they not care? They have been using a shot of downtown on the video wall behind the anchors a lot, but that only takes it from 5 logos to 4 on the wide shot. With the desk, they could maybe do the day of the week on one screen and the date on the other, then switch it to an animation showing the logos of the social channels they’re on? And then their URL? Repeat. Kind of like a bug on steroids. Just spitballing here. That would get them down to 2 logos, which is manageable. The columns look good when there’s a OTS on them. Otherwise … meh. The new KXAN set is guilty of having multiple logos, too, but it’s nowhere near as obnoxious.

I was channel surfing on Pluto TV and stumbled upon CBS NEWS DFW when they were talking about Texas Governor Greg Abbott's State of the State address.

And I literally had to search YouTube, because I thought maybe they were taking clips from a Nexstar station covering it, which was weird, but alright. But no. The Governor's SOTS was produced in partnership with Nexstar (KXAN).

I have alot of mixed feelings. On one hand, I feel like it's good because of high production quality for the address, and a smooth transition to the Democratic response, etc. On another hand, I feel like it is weird to have a local media outlet produce a Government address, or anything like that matter. Yes, they allowed both sides of the aisle to address Texas, but at the same time I feel like there's a bit of a violation of journalistic ethics. But what I'm also wondering, has a State Government partnered with a local media outlet to do something like this?

They’ve been doing this for several years now. It is produced by KXAN and airs live on Nexstar stations statewide. In San Antonio, the address typically airs on Graham’s KSAT since that city doesn’t have a Nexstar station.

What is going on with WDIV?  They are losing people right and left, and bringing back people who already left.  Are they preparing to go Indy?

Interesting. The Graham station in Houston, KPRC, has been hit hard too. Lots of abrupt departures in recent months, including midday and 4p anchor Christine Noel, 5p anchor Lauren Freeman, Houston Life co-anchor Courtney Zavala, Houston Life reporter Joe Sam and the news director, who had been in the market for nearly two decades (first at KTRK). Plus a morning anchor change-up, bringing back a former anchor and bumping the current anchor to middays and 4p.

Bizarre programming changes too, including canceling the 4:30a newscast, sticking a day-old rerun of ET between the 11a and noon newscasts and moving Houston Life back to its old, less desirable timeslot.

Some of this is no doubt related to getting a new GM after the old one retired, but it still seems excessive. I’m wondering if it’s more indicative of potential turmoil at Graham corporate as opposed to station-specific issues.
