  1. This screenshot is from today’s noon news. It’s more than likely temporary, but given the station’s recent history I’m surprised they aren’t going for an immediate launch of CBS News Philadelphia (likewise for NYC and Chicago). Perhaps Denver is a test market of sorts for the branding?

And we have problems already. Muslim groups are sounding alarm bells over CNN hiring John Miller as its chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst.

    https://nypost.com/2022/09/08/muslim-groups-slam-cnn-for-hiring-ex-nypd-official-john-miller/

Miller, a former NYPD official, "told the City Council earlier this year that the department never engaged in illegal surveillance of Muslim Americans after 9/11." Contrary to what he said, the department acknowledged that they did engage in said illegal surveillance (which was the subject of a Pulitzer Prize-winning report from the Associated Press in 2011) following the events of 9/11, with New York City Mayor and retired NYPD captain Eric Adams saying, "What we did was wrong." It also admitted that the program did not produce any leads to a terrorist plot. Yet, even after those, he continually refused to admit that there was any wrongdoing by the NYPD.

Thus, Muslim Advocates have called CNN's hiring of Miller "a cruel joke" and are convinced Miller will pick up from where he left off and continue to "propagandize on behalf of law enforcement and dismiss clear discrimination against Muslims and other marginalized communities."

From a purely journalistic standpoint, this is a serious issue. However, I don’t think it will do much to negatively impact CNN here. While the stigma against Muslims in this country has decreased somewhat, news outlets of every sort still have a level of deference toward national security analysts. I’m personally not a fan of having that much deference, but that’s the status quo across every American news outlet, for better or worse.

  3. Look, I’m not some sort of sappy royalist who thinks the American networks should cover nothing but the British Royals for the next ten days. I’m not a fan of the American obsession over British royalty either, and while Queen Elizabeth II was a remarkable woman and head of state, the institution of the House of Windsor is extremely flawed. Also, Prince Andrew can kiss my Royal Irish A$$™.

That being said, when a 70-year head of state passes away and news outlets from the UK, the Commonwealth nations, the U.S., and all around the world cover it on the *day* of her death, that isn’t obsession; that’s news. “American obsession” isn’t an excuse for one network’s gross incompetence, ineptitude, and stupidity from the top down. When every network, news outlet, newspaper, idiot with a camera, and their mothers are all reporting on this story, that means it is an event of *international* (a word that NewsNation’s staff likely had to look up in the dictionary) significance. It is not the time to run a Blue Bloods rerun and bitch about the whole thing in prime time.

That being said, I will admit to having one obsession: NewsNation itself. As I write this, I am well aware that I am spending WAY too much time and energy on a channel that gets outpaced by Newsmax in terms of both viewership AND news coverage. Yes, even Newsmax, which was born out of an opinion magazine and has always had serious credibility issues, is more of a news channel at this point. NewsNation is not a serious news outlet, and unless there is some cataclysmic event at the network itself, it does not warrant any more of my attention, time, or energy. I imagine many others can say the same.

One last thing and then I’ll shut up about this farce of a channel for good: Even NewsNET did a better job with coverage today. They ran this story on their channel at 2:30 PM ET. YikesNation indeed.

Most channels have stayed with normal programming, but without adverts.  Sky Showcase, Sky Sports News, Sky Racing all joined Sky News.  BBC Three and BBC Four are suspended.  BBC Scotland has joined BBC News.  S4C is producing their own coverage from Cardiff.  Shopping channels have been suspended.

Just curious, are non-news radio stations (not run by the BBC) suspended as well? I imagine they won’t be airing normal programming, but I do wonder what they’re specifically airing right now.

To be fair FNC was showing boring live coverage of a dull border apprehension at the US/Mexico border (aka them doing their job) with a whining pundit about the 'southern border crisis' as the other news channels switched to coverage before the death was announced, so they were doing worse.

Much worse is BBC America, which had...nothing. Not even a 'important news story, go to BBC World News for more information' ticker.

And honestly, this was more an international story than the domestic stuff that's NN's forte, so I can't be mad, or disappointed in them. Dan Abrahms is absolutely useless here and they don't have a big international bureau or 'royal expert', and you don't need one of their opinion folks leading coverage.

I partially agree. NewsNation doesn’t have the resources of other outlets because they never invested in international coverage. As far as BBC America goes, they never break into programs for major events, as it’s an entertainment channel. IIRC, the portion of the BBC that owns BBC America isn’t even funded by the British license fee.

NewsNation needs to decide what it wants to be. I’d have no problem with this lackluster coverage if they were a pure talk channel; they’d still be trash, but at least our expectations would be a bit lower. NewsNation wants to be a news channel (I think), and any news channel worth its salt needs to be on the ball when it comes to a story this significant. If NewsNation can’t even get on the air with a report from the Associated Press, that’s not a lack of resources; that’s incompetence. When even NewsMax is beating you, that’s a horrible look.

EDIT: As of 4:17pm, they’re still showing Blue Bloods. How embarrassing.

  6. On the BBC’s channels, Clive Myrie just stepped in for Huw Edwards, who will return at 10pm GMT.

The BBC’s platforms will no doubt be airing a constant stream of special documentaries, interviews, etc. surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s life over the next few days that have been prepared long in advance. If you have access to BBC World News, you might want to consider archiving their coverage (I’ll do my best to try myself).

It's the end of an era as Britan's longest-reigning monarch has dies at 96 years old.

coverage on US networks is as follows:

NBC: Lester Holt is anchoring a special report. It is not being simulcast on MSNBC or any other NBCU owned cable network.

Fox: simulcast of FNC rolling coverage anchored by Sandra Smith and John Roberts. this is being picked up on most if not all Fox affiliates even though it's technically level 2.

ABC: special report anchored by David Muir.

CBS: special report anchored by Norah O'Donnell.

the cable news channels are in rolling coverage. I don't know if it's being picked up by their co-owned entertainment channels.

David Muir actually isn't anchoring at the moment. Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are anchoring. David was in Ukraine last night for an interview with President Zelenskyy. It wouldn't surprise me if he is in transit from Kyiv to the UK as we speak.

Also, there is an existing thread here:

Huw Edwards had been on the air for several hours at this point, and was dressed in a mourning tuxedo throughout. All programming is suspended across the BBC, as per protocol (no doubt the same is true for ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and Sky).

Interesting news. I don’t think KIRO is trying to be a Scripps station; my guess is there are some people who used to work at KIRO that now work for Scripps or vice versa, and they had a hand in getting “Afternoon Focus” and “The List” on the station. Maybe I’m wrong…..

Or, more likely, there was just no other program inventory they were interested in buying to fill out the 3pm hour. I can’t imagine those shows are all that expensive, and they’ll work as lead-ins to their new 4pm newscast.

Gray stations stream their newscasts on Vuit. Hearst stations are on NewsOn. Does Nexstar have a platform where all of their stations' newscasts are aggregated?

Nope. Many of their stations don’t even stream on their websites. Even Sinclair does better than that.

I actually have liked John on everything he's done and think he's a great politics reporter. Hope he does well on this new program.

Who does have CBS News have for a younger and vibrant personality?

He’s certainly earned his pay as a political reporter, but he was just a little bit awkward on his opening night. I’m sure he’ll improve with time. Personally, he isn’t my favorite choice (I would’ve preferred Elaine Quijano), but I’ll admit that having someone of his caliber certainly helps their streaming effort. Again, even at his worst, he’s miles better than Chuck Todd.

  12. Omar Sachedina began his run at CTV National News this past Monday. At the end of the broadcast, he addressed Lisa LaFlamme’s departure. Reaction has been mixed; some viewers acknowledge that Sachedina was put in a tough spot, while others think that he is simply towing the corporate line.

Sachedina is in an impossible position. He is more than likely a decent man and a good journalist, and he certainly had nothing to do with LaFlamme’s ouster. That said, his initial response to the firing was extremely tone deaf. That alone made him an even bigger punching bag than he already would’ve been (which is likely what the Bell suits want to deflect the attention from them).

WCBD debuted it's new set at 4pm yesterday. A nice upgrade for them, but the wood reminds me of shiplap..not sure how I feel about that part.

The faux shiplap is one thing. What’s worse are those out of place dividers between the big monitors; it legit looks like they put sheetrock dividers up and called it a day. The whole set looks really cheap and tacky (it’s a small market Nexstar station after all), but I suppose it’s an upgrade over what they had.

  14. Here’s WBBM’s on-air announcement of their 9am show. It’s still being advertised as “CBS 2 News at 9,” and the show starts in 5 days. You’d think that given WBBM’s ratings history, and the fact that half the show is streaming-exclusive, they’d do what KCNC is doing and launch the new branding on Monday.

First off, welcome to the forums.

Second, Nick Cannon still in reruns? What the hell? His show got canceled this season, but your telling me reruns will stick around for another year?

I checked the program guide 2 weeks ahead out of curiosity, and it checks out. It’s replacing an 11:30pm airing of TMZ Live on WOFL.

I came across this interesting story that mentions the upcoming launch of the new CBS News Detroit local newscast on WWJ & WKBD.  The new newscast is expected to debut in or around November.  Unless CBS decides to do soft launch at the tail end of October in the days before Election Day.  This should be interesting.

    https://digiday.com/future-of-tv/how-cbs-news-co-presidents-neeraj-khemlani-and-wendy-mcmahon-are-stepping-up-their-streaming-news-outlet/amp/

They’d be dumb not to launch before Election Day. Frankly, if they were smarter, they’d launch in early October at the latest. They’ll be less relevant to the viewing audience if they launch their operation *after* one of the biggest news events of the year passes.

Lifelong Minnesotan here- even if you are correct, they will take a sweet long time to kill off the best known branding/call letters in the state.

They had the opportunity to unveil the CBSN MN brand to the tens of thousands who walk by their booth at the state fair and every sign, banner, and giveaway had the classic WCCO logo on it.

Along with the billboards, you don’t spend that kind of money on promos and giveaways (even if they are paper fans and reusable grocery bags) to flip it right away.

Good point, and now that you mention it, the state fair was at the back of my mind in the lead up to what we thought would be a Labor Day launch. The near absence of “CBS News Minnesota” branding on their tents, signage, etc. was hard not to notice. You’d think they’d use an event like the state fair to promote the new brand to the masses alongside their existing brand, if only for streaming purposes.

I still think they’ll implement the “CBS News Minnesota” brand alongside the existing WCCO brand (see the graphics demo, although that is likely not the final look). That said, it might take take at least a year before the WCCO name goes away on TV. There’s even a small chance that it doesn’t go away at all, although that would make WCCO a very special exception among the CBS O&Os. I suppose that would only happen if the market’s reaction to the whole rebrand is *extremely* negative.

WCCO isn’t the only station that is slow to promote the “CBS News (City)” brand. Even though KCNC is launching its rebrand on Sept. 12th, WCBS is still advertising their new 9am newscast (premiering on the same day) as “CBS2 News at 9,” with less than a week to go. There’s also a new KYW morning promo with the new graphics that advertises that newscast as “CBS3 Eyewitness News” (I’ll look for pictures/videos of both and post them here ASAP). Those aren’t “legacy stations” like WCCO, so perhaps those stations are slowly transitioning their brands because of the large number of OTA viewers in those markets? I’m honestly not sure. The rollout is a bit inconsistent at this point, and some things may not even be finalized yet. Chances are, we’ll know a lot more on Monday.

One of the problems was the tail end of the 19-20 and last season of Ellen were pretty much the last thing most viewers wanted to watch, so for many of these stations, they do have to spend the money and say that they have something to watch at 4pm, even if it's a newscast.

Also The Four is probably there to stay just based on hashtag-ness (#thefouronwccofour or #thefouronfour); if it was The 4 on CBS 39...yeah, that's a temp title.

Also, they’re the newcomer in the 4pm news game, and have to catch up with KARE, so I suppose every bit of promotion helps. Still, three in a row is overkill.

Agree on the name and branding. WCCO isn’t spending loads of cash to promote a temporary title/branding.

It appears that John Muller is replacing Craig Treadway as weekend morning co-anchor with Kirstin Cole.  I tuned in this morning and Craig Treadway was anchoring the 4am newscast with Vanessa Freeman.

Lots of changes at PIX, and Muller seems to have been demoted several times since he returned to the station as lead anchor. First, he was dropped from the 5 and 10pm newscasts in favor of Kori Chambers.  Then he was dropped at 6pm and moved to the early morning slot, and now weekend mornings.

I’ve given up trying to understand the logic behind many of PIX’s staffing arrangements. The only constant at that station is change, and Muller’s certainly used to that.

Trying to cast this as but anything but a downgrade and contract burn-off is completely impossible.

Marni isn’t stupid, though. She’s probably padding her resume as we speak. Any credible journalist would want to get the hell out of there asap.

As far as the programming goes (Cuomo is taking over the 9pm slot), it’s ironic how CNN is desperately trying to cast off it’s opinionated approach (a few years too late), while the “all facts, no opinion” channel has gone all-talk in prime time.

I’m sure the anchors would find a way to get back in time for a majority of the coverage but there are much more robust contingency plans for network news these days than the 60s. For instance, George or Whit Johnson are more than capable of holding things together in David’s absence. Savannah or Tom Llamas could hold things down at NBC while Lester was en route. I have no idea who works at CBS.

Usually Major Garrett covers for Norah at CBS.
