WITI's new graphics

The only thing is, is that the new ones don't look O&O.

Look at the L3. It's much more light blue.

I wasn't referring to those. Check the promo for the 9:00 news during "House" tonight. (I will point out that they look like the graphics that plug myfoxmilwaukee.com)

Eh, I guess they're still not the O&O graphics yet, but they had me fooled.

The hints of the new package we've seen already (the "FOX6 NEWS AT 9" title slide they're using in promos, and the L3 they're using for the end card also in promos) definitely look better than the current one, but in my opinion, not nearly as good as the O&O package.

I honestly fail to understand why they would decide not to implement the O&O package, with everyone else going to it. Their studio is 10+ years old, which is almost ancient in TV terms; it could seriously use a total makeover, and what better to use than the O&O studio design? And as for the graphics, I'm a big fan of uniformity across the board... it establishes the identity that is FOX NEWS.

I guess if they plan to redo the studio, just not now, an interim package is better than nothing.... and as long as WITI is happy with a consistent third place finish in the market, who am I to question them?

I just saw a promo that said that AP named WITI the best newscast in Milwaukee.

It DEFINITELY had O&O-style graphics.

That sorry attempt of a graphic with the classic 80's style pizzeria ad font was created using stock graphics from digitaljuice.com - as is seemingly 90% of what WITI is outputting. It looks like the new O&O graphics, but 20 minutes searching through digitaljuice.com and you'll find most of what WITI is airing.

How pathetic...

  • 3 weeks later...

Wednesday they changed their weather graphics to a more O&O look. But the background has the square elements like all the MyFoxMilwaukee bumps.

It's definitely an updated style... but it ain't the O&O look by any stretch of the imagination.

I just don't get this station at all. They're in a distant third place... the only station trailing them is WDJT, which probably has a smaller budget than a college station, so that's not saying much. They have no clear visual identity, because they're using a mishmash of at least 2 graphics packages, plus a bunch of homemade stuff that doesn't even match itself let alone any of the packages they're using. They're using the O&O music package, yet apparently have no interest in using the graphics package that actually MATCHES it. They've got a set that hasn't really been touched since it was built almost 10 years ago (with the exception of swapping out the etched glass to update the logo). And they're using a website that is supposed to echo the O&O graphics package - the one they're apparently not interested in using.

Frankly, I've seen better run and better looking stations in smaller DMAs like Green Bay and Madison. How does FOX not step in and do something about this station? And why is this station so happy with just barely being adequate?

WLFD Fox Chicago uses the same weather graphics in terms of the day Planner. This is a step in the right direction. The O&O look will came to WITI one day. Changes take time.

I like WFLD's new "FOX Chicago WeatherWatch" graphics better.

I really don't like the O&O look. I hope WITI goes with something else.

There's a few reasons I like the O&O look. First and foremost, it makes the newscast appear big market - or at the very least bigGER market than they might normally be. It's designed to "mesh" with the branding at the national level, and as a result, it makes the local station feel like they're a national player.

Second, it's a complete package that is ready to go... all the station has to do is insert the local station ID into the package and they're done. I'm not talking some cheap off-the-shelf package either.

Third, and the thing I like for FOX6, it adds structure (properly implemented), which is something I think FOX 6's newscasts desperately need. The newscasts, at least to me, just sort of meander along, and it doesn't help the way they use their set, with newscasters just sort of aimlessly strolling about the set like wandering minstrels. I'd hope a new set and graphics package would help in this aspect.
