Springfield Tornadoes Coverage

Recommended Posts

As tornadoes struck in Springfield and threatened other parts of MA, there was quite a bit of coverage from the regional media.

All of the Boston stations did quite a bit of expanded coverage during the day and sent reporters for 11 PM.

In Providence, WJAR was on the air from 5-7:30, preempting Nightly, even though the Providence DMA was largely spared. They are also co-anchoring their 11 PM news from Springfield.

As for Springfield itself, all stations had expanded live coverage. WWLP was able to get some amazing video of the tornado as it struck from their towercam.

Here's the video:

WFSB was simulcasting WSHM in Springfield starting at around 4:30. I was able to record some video from the 5pm newscast. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see the tornado happen on live TV, but I was able to capture when they replayed the video.

Here's some of the coverage:

Sorry for the video being recorded from the TV screen.

I've been on here for years but never tipped my hand on where I work. In this case I have to because I'm so proud of the crew I work with. Here's WSHM's live coverage as the tornado hit, along with our first coverage promo.

Our studios are located INSIDE Monarch Place, the building where this skycam is situated. I was in the control room as this thing came across, just a few hundred feet from us. With that in mind, listen to how calm our chief met is throughout this whole thing, even as he knows the twister's bearing down on our studios.

Just chiming in to add that that's WSHM's raw video, not WWLP's.

I think the stations share a towercam, or they have them right next to each other. I was watching WWLP live as it happened, and they had that shot live on the air.

Anyway, here's who was there live today.

Springfield

WSHM, WWLP, WGGB

Hartford

WFSB, WTNH, WVIT, WTIC

Providence

WJAR, WPRI

Albany

WRGB, WNYT, WTEN, WXXA

Boston

WBZ, WFXT, WHDH, WCVB (all of which aired continuous wall to wall coverage all day today)

New York

WCBS, WABC

I work at WSHM. We have separate towercams. Also, if you notice the video headline, it's via "CBS 3 Springfield". Sorry to nitpick... just tired of WWLP always getting the credit for EVERYTHING any other station in the market does.

Then how did WWLP have the video live?
