TVNewsRI 4
Denver's KWGN will launch a new set tonight at 7. From what I can see in the sneak peek pics posted on their website it looks pretty nice. I'd bet that KDVR will build a new set in the space where KWGN used to be. http://kwgn.com/2012/06/25/slideshow-channel-2s-new-set/ Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/11951-kwgn-debuting-new-set-tonight/ Share on other sites
C Block 1566
Well that caught me off guard...I noticed KDVR's 10pm program (which usually broadcasts from the set right next to KWGN's) was in KDVR's main newsroom set last week, but I never really catch much of KWGN so I didn't notice. I'm sure KDVR must be getting a new set at some point soon too but I doubt it will be in the same studio as KWGN because of their competing morning programs. I'll post caps later tonight. I didn't catch the open, so I'll post video tomorrow. Edit: It looks like I'm wrong, and they built it in part of KDVR's newsroom set where the weather center used to be! So I guess that means that KDVR must be moving back into the actual studio space? http://kwgn.com/2012/06/25/construction-of-new-kwgn-set/ Either way, I'm very curious as to how they'll do Good Day Colorado and Daybreak tomorrow. C Block 1566
I have a video in the works, but in the meantime, here are some screencaps. It looks like it's what's known on here as the FX set-in-a-box. Aside from the obvious custom Colorado flare, I'm pretty sure I've seen very similar sets built by FX in many small market stations. I like the sunset backdrop— it looks nice and looks very Colorado. The stone pillars aren't bad either. The black glass-top desk, though, completely clashes with the Colorado look that they're really trying to push. The grey walls to the sides are a little dull, and those plasmas hanging on the wall don't look very clean. I'm pretty sure they just took them from the Nightside set. That would explain why Nightside wasn't broadcasting from that set last week and this week. KWGN/KDVR has all these mini-sets (7 different presentation points!) sprawling across their formal studio space and their newsroom for many different shows across two stations. A solution to this (which would have been what I would have gone with) would have been to build two really high quality, versatile sets (one in the newsroom, and one in the studio) for each station so that they could be adapted for all the different newscasts and programs. Instead, it looks like they're keeping this sprawling mini-set idea. This set looks okay on television, but it's a small set for a small market and was designed by one of the cheapest set design firms in the country. Sure, the old set was going on 7 years old, had four different sets of duratrans, lasted 5 different station logos, and was even moved from the Tech Center to Downtown, but it's larger than the new set, looks just as nice (if not better), and its anchor desk could actually seat four people. It's a bit of a letdown considering their creative team did such a good job on the new logos, graphics, and music. They must've chosen FX because that's either all the budget could afford or they didn't know any better. Knowing Local TV, my guess is the former. *And please, don't steal these, Michael P Hill!* Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/11951-kwgn-debuting-new-set-tonight/#findComment-73610 Share on other sites

A3N 1002
*And please, don't steal these, Michael P Hill!* You should watermark your images. Seems like many screen caps and information on TVNT "winds up" on his site w/o giving this site credit. Nice screencaps btw, the set looks a bit bland, let's hope that KDVR's (potential) new set isn't a let down. Weeters 1916
I've made it known I'm not a fan of those thin bezel monitors, but if ever there were a time to use them.... Geoffrey 861
I've made it known I'm not a fan of those thin bezel monitors, but if ever there were a time to use them.... I think this part looks pretty bad. Not only is the separation between monitors so thick, they're not even pointed at the camera. sfomspphl 490
The stone and open plains horizon are a distinct look - but the rest of it, including graphcs, just scream 1996. C Block 1566
As predicted, KDVR is in a temporary set as of Tuesday morning. It's composed mostly of the former weather center and demo area of KDVR's set. The evening programs still use the blue newsroom set. But I guess it's safe to say...that KDVR is getting a new set in the studio? The temporary set is on the second floor in the open atrium area that overlooks the newsroom set(s). In other words, KDVR and KWGN are literally broadcasting on top of each other. Also, you can see co-anchor Nick Emmons walking back to the program from his coffee break below.
