KTLA helicopter makes emergency landing

Monday evening (August 27), KTLA's Sky5 news helicopter became the story while covering another after smoke began eminating from its engine. It happened while the station was covering a breaking news story regarding the search for a gunman following a shooting in Hollywood during the Tribune-owned CW affiliate's 6 p.m. newscast, when the helicopter's engine started malfunctioning. KCBS/KCAL's helicopter was in the area covering the story as well at the time, when pilot Dan Catalano noticed the smoke pouring from the engine, wondering whether Sky5 pilot Tim Lynn (who was joined by photographer Jeff Laabs, who was on his second day at the station) knew about the situation at hand. Lynn made an emergency landing in a parking lot on Highland Boulevard and Franklin Avenue; both he and Laabs, luckily, came out unscathed. The smoke has since been ruled to have been the result of oil leaking from the helicopter's cracked engine.
