Nielsen Media Research has released its market rankings for 2012-13, and few changes in rankings have occurred within the 40 largest stations. While most markets have held their ranks from the previous market ranking list. New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia, which retain their #1, #3 and #4 rankings, actually saw a decrease in the number of television households.

* New York City saw a drop in TV households from 7,387,810 to 7,384,3402 homes

* The number of TV households in Chicago dropped from 3,493,480 to 3,484,8004 homes

* The number of TV households in Philadelphia saw the most substantial drop from 2,993,370 homes to 2,949,3105

#2 rated Los Angeles, meanwhile, saw an increase in the number of households with at least one television set from 5,569,780 to 5,613,460. Between 2011 and 2012, the overall number of homes with at least one television set has dropped by 475,620 households.

As far as the top 50 markets go, markets 1 to 38 saw no ranking change, but seven markets saw enough of a bump or decline in TV home to spark either an increase or decrease in their market ranking. Markets within the top 50 that rose in the rankings are:

* Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek, MI rose three spots to crack the top 40, moving from 42nd to 39th place (despite a decline in TV homes from 722,150 to 720,150)

* Oklahoma City, OK also rose three spots from 44th to 41st place (number of TV homes rose from 712,630 to 718,770)

* Austin, TX rose two spots from 47th to 45th place (number of TV homes rose from 686,830 to 705,280)

Markets within the top 50 that saw their market ranking lower are:

* Birmingham-Anniston-Tuscaloosa, AL dropped out of the top 40, with its market ranking decreasing from 39th to 42nd place (number of TV homes declined from 738,790 to 717,530)

* Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, PA dropped two spots from 41st to 43rd place (number of TV homes declined from 729,440 to 716,990)

* Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News, VA dropped one spot from 43rd to 44th place (number of TV homes declined from 718,750 to 709,730)

* Albuquerque-Santa Fe, NM dropped two spots from 45th to 47th place (number of TV homes declined from 710,050 to 691,450)

When I found this on TVSpy, I was surprised to see that Oklahoma City actually rose three spots in the market rankings. I don't think it's ever been ranked among the 40 largest media markets in either the Nielsen television rankings or the Arbitron radio rankings (correct me if I'm wrong), but this is a step in the right direction.

Dang Charlotte is still in the 25th spot but yet Raleigh-Durham is in the 24th spot. WTF!

I guess at the moment, Raleigh-Durham is the hot spot in the state. I'm not surprised considering how well the region has weathered the economic slow down compared to Charlotte.

Here in Alaska, Anchorage is up three notches from #148 to #145 with the number of homes risen by 680.

Fairbanks (still #202), on the other hand? We were the biggest gainer from 37,010 to 37,920!

HELLO ANCHORAGE! (trying to get your attention from a spot below)
