NewzPimpin 1
This past Sunday afternoon (less that 48 hours ago), I posted an open from one of WSBT's crappy, sub-par newscasts on YouTube. The GM of WSBT in South Bend, IN takes time away from running his station to email me a C&D letter. But that's not why I'm peeved. What pissed me off was the fact that he added this line to it: As an aspiring reporter/journalist you should know better and respect copyrighted material. Rather than just saying "Please take our below average open down; we don't want free publicity", he attempts to scold me. Oh, the nerve! But hey, then again, the open does feature a Stephen Arnold theme (U-Phonix), so this may be the reason he wants the open taken down (I have no idea why stations even do business with Stephen Arnold; his packages are starting to sound less and less like news music and they're very expensive to license). NewzPimpin 1
I've noticed a pattern in your replies, which is mostly negative and critical of other people here. It seems as if you jump at the chance... But on to my reply. No, I do not own their logo or news open, but what harm have I done by posting a 20 second clip of it to YouTube? Most TV stations don't care about their opens or packages being posted on YouTube; in fact, a GM asked me to post some old video from his station on a previous YouTube account. Everyone from WABC to WXYZ has clips on YouTube that have been there for ages; they're not whining and having hissy fits over them. In fact, the station where I interned at, WMC, recently celebrated meteorologist Dave Brown's 30th anniversary. On the WMC TV website, they posted links to YouTube videos of classic WMC footage that had been uploaded by multiple users months before they were linked to the WMC website. But I digress... The point was that the GM had no need to add a custom line to a C&D letter in an attempt to "school" me. NewzPimpin 1
Well, he has his reasons. That's exactly what I was talking about... Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1271-wtf-is-up-with-wsbt/#findComment-10791 Share on other sites
NewzPimpin 1
I get WSBT from where I live. I hate that station. They probably don't want it on there because it shows how bad the station is. Do you have a link to the video, or was it removed? http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/nagaflas/?action=view¤t=wsbt.flv Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1271-wtf-is-up-with-wsbt/#findComment-10797 Share on other sites

Do you have a link to the video, or was it removed? http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h135/nagaflas/?action=view¤t=wsbt.flv The open isn't so bad, but it doesn't have the impact that the old TVBD "Together, Making a Difference" opens did-- not that they were the greatest, but they lent something to the image. This look is a mix of an old logo that needs a refresh (not a total overhaul, it just needs to come into the 90s, at least) and some element that just don't work well together. I'm rather surprised that WSBT took the approach to you that they have. Like you said, it's free publicity, and to an extent, it serves a public interest. And it's not like you have misappropriated it. You have nothing to gain from posting the open, just as they have nothing to lose. And did someone finally ban First at 4:30? 10Viewer 334
I don't know why some stations get so jumpy about copyrights, especially if it's old footage from years ago...it's not likely they've ever use it again so what difference does it make? It's not like your trying to sell the material or pawn off the production values as your own...sheesh. Your not trying to sell airtime or anything...lol. MidnightJunkie 55
All of my videos on youtube showing off WAGT's (WSBT's sister station) opens were just recently removed after being up on the site for at least 10 months, if not more. I didn't receive a nasty letter, just an email that all 5 of my videos had been deleted because of a mandate by WAGT crying over copyright issues. I wonder if it's a Schurz communications deal to not have/want videos of their stations on youtube. *yawn* lame. mobilene 2
This past Sunday afternoon (less that 48 hours ago), I posted an open from one of WSBT's crappy, sub-par newscasts on YouTube. The sad part is, those newscasts are the best available in the market. WNDU used to have the best product, but in the past couple years most of the oldtimers that made the station good have moved on. What's left is a parade of kids just getting their start, and shortly moving to bigger markets. WSBT is like that too, just less so. The GM of WSBT in South Bend, IN takes time away from running his station to email me a C&D letter. But that's not why I'm peeved. What pissed me off was the fact that he added this line to it: As an aspiring reporter/journalist you should know better and respect copyrighted material. I don't blame you for being irked, but don't let that GM live rent-free in your brain! blueflag 0
Haven't these people ever heard of 'fair use'? Of course, 'fair use' is not a right, it's a defence -- which means even though you're most likely in the right, it's not worth it to fight them on it. Has anybody seen this? It's pretty darn funny (and educational, too): http://www.boingboing.net/2007/05/19/fairy_use_tale_amazi.html Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/1271-wtf-is-up-with-wsbt/#findComment-10896 Share on other sites
