KDKA-TV Finally Gets HD VIPIR Radar

KDKA-TV, the CBS O&O in Pittsburgh, who is far behind the times in technology compared to WTAE and WPXI, finally upgraded their VIPIR radar system to HD. In the past they letterboxed the radar screen (and because the output was directly from the Windows desktop, you could sometimes see the radar window's title bar at the top, oops). It seems that they now have a proper HD setup and possibly even new computers as I can see some newer computer equipment in the forecast center.

Here's this evening's forecast featuring the new radar: http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/video/8976335-kdka-tv-evening-forecast-610/

They did drop the AccuWeather graphics. They're now using the same icons that the other O&Os use. I don't know if they'll ever move away from VIPIR, though.

They changed the icons but they're still running CinemaLive HD. You can see it on one of the monitors in that video.

Update: I don't actually know if the system is "new". I could still see a Windows Classic titlebar at the very top of the radar screen during one of the noon newscasts, and I can tell that the aspect ratio of the radar is still 4:3. I think they just changed the video output so that it fills the screen, though Jeff Verszyla did tell me on Twitter that a new HD system was coming....

Just based on the videos on their site, I don't see anything wrong with the VIPIR system. It appears to be 16:9, and all the VIPIR systems I've seen use the Windows Classic style option. They're probably running Windows Server 2008.

As for the HD-ness, I can't tell. Now the news nerd part of me is disappointed that my trip to Pittsburgh this past weekend fell through.

So all VIPIR systems work just by streaming a picture of the desktop like that?

PS: Love your profile pic. I can't believe John Shumway dressed as a furry for that live shot.

Yes. In fact, if the whole window was visible, the titlebar would show what resolution the system is running in, like in this screencap:

and he was actually off camera narrating when the fursuiter was on camera. The actual person in the fursuit is a TV news editor, though! I follow him on Twitter.
