KCTV building a new set

KCTV, the CBS affiliate in Kansas City, is building a new set. It's coming in November, making it their third set since they launched in HD back in 2008. The now old one was a pretty big refresh and the one before that lasted only about two years or so.

This promo is of their temporary set, which frankly their current with some updated backgrounds: http://www.kctv5.com/video?clipId=9324871&autostart=true

Then there's this promo: http://www.kctv5.com/video?clipId=9325454&autostart=true

I don't really watch KCTV, but I'm getting the impression that they're still in their current studio that's been updated slightly while completely building the new one elsewhere. Unless of course they've crammed themselves into a tiny little corner of the studio.

They will probably post photos regularly giving us a glimpse of what it will look like. I also feel as if that kiddy blueprint and lego desk are actual representations of what we'll end up seeing...that will be an odd looking desk if it ends up being true.

I know KCTV's last news director got a job in San Antonio. Did a new one come in and is already starting to make an impression on KCTV?

Serious question, I can't find anything about KCTV getting a news director and the fact that this fairly recent set is getting replaced at the same time a news director is getting replaced doesn't seem to be a coincidence.

Hopefully they don't replace those graphics. Those are some of the nicest (non-cheap looking) graphics that KCTV has had in quite a while.

I don't think they have gotten a new news director yet. Their now old set always looked sort of weird on air and small market for a market of Kansas City's size. Their ratings are also on the increase, (practically the most watched station), so I'm guessing that's another reason.

Their current set does look pretty cheap. The they had before they went to HD was the one they had for nearly 8 years.

The other thing we seem to be forgetting is that Meredith investing in a station is a once in a lifetime event (slight exaggeration) but they don't spend money upgrading their stations too often.

The last Meredith station to get a set upgrade is KPTV in Portland. A set similar to this would would look great with KCTV's current graphics and help make it's overall presentation look professional and a formidable opponent to KMBC.

They already are a formidable opponent to KMBC, who are essentially a fall from grace now.

If they did get a set similar to KPTV, it makes me wonder how much it would inspire KMBC or KSHB to do something with theirs. KMBC's is little changed since they first launched in HD back in 2007 with their newsroom set. KSHB has only updated their interview area and duratrans, the latter only because of their re-brand. If KCTV's ends up looking all hip and modern, then KSHB and KMBC will certainly have the oldest looking sets in the market.

All I have to say is wow. Here's a time lapse video that they've provided of it.

It is MUCH better than their current one and previous one before it, that's for sure, and is EASILY the best set in Kansas City now. The next station in line for a new set has something to beat now. Sort of looks like an FX job as well.

I was thinking more of WCCO with that copper basket weaving thing going on there by the main anchor desk. Speaking of which, I don't really like how grid-like the main backdrop is, and that's actually something viewers have already complained a lot about.

Actually, I'm finding now that there's a lot more negative feedback than what I would've expected.

Here's a video from this morning of what's apparently the main shot with that white line dividing the two. People are right, the picture in that Facebook photo is what the main shot should be. It looks too off centered with what they're using now. They've also updated their graphics some and moved the logo to the right side (for SOME reason) like KMBC and KSHB.

But it's a nice set! Don't get me wrong, it is, but they just need to do some adjusting and nitpicking with it and it'll be great. Very nice for Kansas City.

People on Facebook always try to find a reason to complain, so I wouldn't gauge it too much. But I'm glad they finally got rid of their old set. They kept trying to update it but it still didn't age too well.

Did KCTV change their opens at all? To me, that was always the most disappointing part of their package.

No, the opens are still the same for now at least. Same single cut for every newscast.
