devswartz 2 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 First it was WABC's set catching fire a couple of weeks ago...now it's a water main break at WPVI. That took place Friday in the station's parking lot after a backhoe struck the main, causing 100,000 gallons of water to gush into the station's first floor. Videos are still up at 6abc.com. Though definitely a setback, I imagine ABC has pretty solid insurance.
tazz765 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The only thing pertaining to WPVI's newscasts that was affected is the "Call for Action" segments because the phone bank is located on the first floor which is still being cleaned. It should be up and running again in a week.

who?cares 255 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The reporter talks too fast. Sounds like a record on the blitz!
tazz765 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 The reporter talks too fast. Sounds like a record on the blitz! You have to be talking about Dann Cuellar. Every single package he does sounds like that. He gets 2:00 minutes worth of material in a 1:30 package.
YoungstownTV 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 This is like what happened to KDKA-TV A couple years ago. A water line right near the station broke. As a result, KDKA lost some of their trucks and employees' personal vehicles(water flooded into the underground parking garage) and the graphics department (located near the parking garage) was ruined.

At least we know Channels 6 & 10 would be 1st on the scene, lol.
DFWTVNews30 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 WPVI is very solid and with the return of LIsa Thomas Laury its only gotten better. I do wonder why they still have that 1970s music theme. I heard they tried to change a few years ago but the station was bombarded with THOUSANDS of phone calls with viewers complaining they changed it back. With the dominance, and I'm assuming they make the most $$$, they could update their set. It is a top 10 market for goodness sake.

Yeah, that happened last summer. It knocked out KDKA's graphics department, which forced them to use their old (good) pre-viacom mandate open ( ). KDKA also did a story on the flood and the type of precautions they had to take and what they were doing during the flood. ( ) It took KDKA about a month or so to get back to normal. For the time being, everything ran normally except the graphics, so I doubt WPVI will see huge problems.
Ntropolis 599 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 With the dominance, and I'm assuming they make the most $$$, they could update their set. WPVI got a new set when they went HD... and it's great. I think they replaced the "6abc" logo on the front of the desk with a plasma... http://farm1.static.flickr.com/19/121460712_286d52de00_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/45/121460932_310596a234_b.jpg

It is a top 10 market for goodness sake. They just updated the set, what about a year ago? I wasn't impressed. I always liked LTL, but she has a manly voice. When I turned on the tv yesterday, until I actually looked at the screen, I thought it was a man. It's gotten much deeper as she's gotten older.
jerseyfla 207 Posted June 18, 2007 Posted June 18, 2007 You think LTL sounds manly? How about Natalie Jacobson from WCVB in Boston. I love both anchors to death but if it wasn't for her tenure at WCVB I don't think anyone with her voice would work in showbiz.
Alain 17 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 music computers? ahhaha...you mean record players You'd think they would have upgraded to 8-tracks by now. BRAVO! You have me in tears of joy!
HoustonNews 0 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Another O&O to add to the list.. Although it's not as catastrophic as a flood or studio fire, legendary #1 in Houston, KTRK, is #2 across the board for the first time in many years, if not ever. Last month's KHOU Morning News win bumped KTRK out of any #1 timeslots.

devswartz 2 Posted June 26, 2007 Author Posted June 26, 2007 WPVI is very solid and with the return of LIsa Thomas Laury its only gotten better. With the dominance, and I'm assuming they make the most $$$, they could update their set. It is a top 10 market for goodness sake. I think presentation-wise, WPVI's image is perfect. The golds and reds in the graphics look awesome with the trademark WPVI blue. The set is spot on in that it's only elaborate in spots (the glass skyline kicks arse, and the bumps to break showing the set are breathtaking). If it had more eye candy, it would actually take away from the station's rough-around-the-edges persona. Of course, that persona is heavily backed by its news music of 35 years, give or take five days. It has been 10 years since they tried to update the music...and have you heard the music they wanted to use? No wonder why it was rejected. They went from loud 70s hippie pop with an electric bass and a trumpet to much lighter sounding--thunderous, yes, but still very, very light-sounding--modern classical music. Also, the music was too straightforward, the direct opposite of the image that got them popular in the first place. Their actual news product is in major need of improvement, though. About making lots of cash, WPVI has been considered the main reason that Capital Cities bought ABC in 1985. WPVI is noted as being one of the most profitable stations in the country, and it was the station's large profits that gave CapCities the capital, if you will, to follow through. Finally, I am trying to see if I can get a hold of LTL, because she's awesome. That and I am a broadcast journalism junior at Marshall University. Her bio says she was a broadcast journalism graduate of...you guessed it...Marshall University. And no, I have no flippin' clue why nobody in the school of journalism knows about her.
