Looks like Pandora is now the proud owner of KXMZ 102.7 in Rapid City, South Dakota, after a two-year long legal battle.

Thoughts?

They are using it as a loophole so that they can spend less on songwriting loyalties for the whole company, so I don't think they will be moving en masse to the terrestrial radio. Smart move.

iHeartRadio does the same thing. All their "speciality" music stations are really just simulcasts of one of their station's HD2 signals. If you listen to them long enough, you'll hear the ID.

Technically the FCC hasn't approved the assignment application yet. What came out on May 4th from the FCC was a "Declaratory Ruling" related to Pandora's (foreign) ownership. In fact on page 8 of the "Declaratory Ruling" it explicitly stated "We take no action at this time on the Assignment Application and related pleadings." And, ASCAP and Pandora are still exchanging blows in filings with the FCC. I don't know why the media did such a horse shit job reporting that. Although, in fairness it does appear like the assignment is a fait accompli at this point.

I'm still waiting for ASCAP and BMI to blast Disney for doing the exact same thing! And, they are doing it in reverse dumping all but one station. Of course ASCAP can't do much to stop Disney but, the hypocrisy is amazing.
