LexTVandRadio 418 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Morris spent a few bucks. http://www.wdef.com/mediacenter/local.aspx Also updated the set here. Set needed something badly. It was the same from 1997? Total about $2,000?
TennTV1983 807 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 They needed a change, albeit it was done on the cheap. The logo looks like a throwback to the old Media General days prior to adopting the crescent look.
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 Surprised they didn't want to go the virtual set route.
atlnews2 594 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Although this was cheaply done, It was badly needed. They still need a new website. All they did was change the banner at the top along with add some red to the site.
promoguy98 254 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 It seems like each of their stations went online and bought super-busy after affects templates. It's busy af but was definitely needed after 10+ years of the extremely outdated Media General look.

Big Country News 435 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 It seems like each of their stations went online and bought super-busy after affects templates. http://videohive.net/item/broadcast-design-news-tv-channel-branding-package/7627892
promoguy98 254 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 http://videohive.net/item/broadcast-design-news-tv-channel-branding-package/7627892 Haha $38 on Videohive! That might have pushed them over budget. Thankfully it didn't and they sprang for Aerial, otherwise they would have had to use digital juice tracks for music.
Hexagonal10 84 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 A new desk would've made them file for bankruptcy.
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 That is why I want someone else to buy this company. I can't find WTVQ's graphics on Videohive.
NEOMatrix 1307 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Yet another reason why Morris needs to be sold...
promoguy98 254 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Yet another reason why Morris needs to be sold... It can't happen fast enough. I wouldn't be surprised if Nexstar or Gray snaps them up over the next year or so. If Gray, obviously they'll spinoff WTVQ through a sale or trade. The broadcast division of Morris is ripe for takeover with someone who has the deeper pockets and the competitive sense to make long-term investments into the stations.
NWA_TV_guy 157 Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 I fainted when I read the thread title! The Media General graphics they were still using for the newscasts were changed around dozens of times. I believe the last refresh to those graphics were given the American flag effect. If you drive by their building you'll see why the set and graphics are out of date. There's very little money invested in the station. They'll keep this look for 10-12 years or until a company with more than $2,000 acquires them.

I could see Gray picking them up. Although like you said WTVQ would be sold off. I'd like to see them maybe get sold off to one of the Louisville stations owner. Hearst, Raycom, or Gannett. I could see WTVQ being successful if someone put money into them.
Ntropolis 599 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Surprised they didn't want to go the virtual set route. Me too. A couple years ago someone at WWAY told me they were going to expand the virtual sets to all the Morris stations. I guess not? That's the same kind of desk WNCT had... in 1998!
NWA_TV_guy 157 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Me too. A couple years ago someone at WWAY told me they were going to expand the virtual sets to all the Morris stations. I guess not? That's the same kind of desk WNCT had... in 1998! WJTV had the same desk as well back from 1995-1996 until 2003-2004 (see attached pic). I also attached a picture of WDEF's set before the refresh just in case some people need a reminder. The next pic is of course the refreshed set seen today.
promoguy98 254 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Me too. A couple years ago someone at WWAY told me they were going to expand the virtual sets to all the Morris stations. I guess not? That's the same kind of desk WNCT had... in 1998! And WJTV as well. They got that same style of desk after acquiring the WMC hand-me-down set in 1996. Haha Freddie Harrison beat me to it!!
Big Country News 435 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 WJTV had the same desk as well back from 1995-1996 until 2003-2004. It's actually not a bad refresh. Looks pretty modern.
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Much better than a horrible virtual set.
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 If someone at WDEF put their foot down and refused to go with the new virtual set...props to them. How much more would going virtual have cost? $2000 is better than something in the 5 figure range, for sure. I give Morris a year before someone snaps them up.
mardek1995 200 Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 I can see Media General buying Morris provided Nexstar doesn't buy the former company. If so however, Gray can buy it.
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted November 8, 2015 Author Posted November 8, 2015 This is what WTVQ uses for its 5:30pm newscasts.
NWA_TV_guy 157 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 This is an article on the system and setup Morris uses for their virtual sets already in place at WAAY & WXXV... http://www.vizrt.com/casestudies/39770/WWAY_uses_Vizrt_for_a_TV_in_a_box_solution_and_trackless_virtual_studio
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 I ran across this. This is from their sister station in Lexington. Real or fake.
promoguy98 254 Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I ran across this. This is from their sister station in Lexington. Real or fake. Definitely fake. Chromakey lines are around table cloth edges, especially on the left side. You can also tell with the right sleeve of the woman on the left and the top of the woman's hair on the right. If someone is going to chromakey a kitchen at least find a modern fake shot.... not something that looks like a google image search gone bad OR a wayback archive kitchen from the 1990's interwebs.
