Longtime WITI Meteorologist Vince Condella to Retire

I figured something like this was coming. The last time I watched the late news on FOX 6, he was doing "tag team" with Tom Wachs. It wasn't even because there wasn't any particular major weather events going on. I guessed that perhaps they were preparing for a transition to have Tom taking over some of Vince's newscasts.

I wonder if he grows back his mustache once he retires? (I still remember the big deal when he finally lost the mustache after many, MANY years.)

I hope he gets to enjoy plenty of time on the Harley and long road trips with nothing to do with sweeps live shots; he deserves it and the few times I've talked to him on Twitter about weather subjects and his weather radio advocacy he's been nothing but kind and excited about meteorology. He's leaving the weather department in good hands, I think.

After 34 years, WITI meteorologist Vince Condella will retire at the end of May (a sweeps period, imagine that...).

So the guy who replaced the guy who replaced Tom Freakin Skilling is retiring, but yet Tom still has a few years left on his most recent contract w/ WGN*

*baring any buyout that the 'up in the air' Tribune Media or successor might offer.

This morning, the station announced that Rob Haswell will take over the chief meteorologist duties once Vince retires, however Rob will remain on his WakeUp News shift.

Kinda weird to have your Chief Meteorologist on in the AM. Wonder how long that will last.

It's rare but it happens.....

In the early 90's In Louisville, WAVE 3 hired away John Belski, who had been chief meteorologist at WLKY 32, to be the met on the 5.6. and 11 broadcasts, while WAVE's chief Tom Wills (Kentuckiana's longest tenured TV met) moved to WAVE 3's morning newscasts, a setup which lasted about 15-20 years. Ironically, in 2009 Wills retired, and Belski left WAVE the next year returning to WLKY a year or so later.

While not the same, it reminds me of KCTV's Gary Amble who was chief met for a bit before being demoted to mornings and is still with the station after all these years.
