news89 468 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Locally owned Thomas Broadcasting (WOAY)in Oak Hill WV is getting a new set. Currently one dates back to the 70s?
TriangleTriadMediaNews 267 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 It always looked like they used a conference room for their set. Yeah, I get that Beckley isn't exactly Chicago, but I'd expect a bit more out of an ABC affiliate, not a set that resembled something from a public access network.

Very true I haven't watched WOAY in a very long time just YouTube videos.
TriangleTriadMediaNews 267 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Very true I haven't watched WOAY in a very long time just YouTube videos. I was in Beckley back at the end of February for a family function and some severe weather rolled through. I'll give WOAY credit for actually staying on and pre-empting The View. WVNS broke in to TPIR for a moment, WVVA mainly ran a crawl during whatever their 11am show is, but WOAY stuck through the entire storm.
Samantha 2902 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Yeah, that's it alright. Here are some views of it from the past... LexTVandRadio 418 Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 A little off topic but they are channel 50 (digital) now right? They were channel 4 (when it was analog). Moving to channel 31 for the spectrum auction. I wonder if they will call themselves WOAY 31?
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 The set would be no older than 1977 if that was indeed the case... The station burned to the ground back then and was relocated to an arena owned by the Thomas family, where it remains to this day. Here is a webpage, which contains an article on how WOAY rebuilt their facilities and got back on the air in only 10 days! http://jeff560.tripod.com/woay.html

And there's a very small part of the old building left! Notice the little ledge that sticks out just below and to the left of the "WOAY" sign on the building? And the small set of stairs next to it? That's still there, right next to their current facility.

Samantha 2902 Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 I mean, it's cool we can even see what the station was like right after the fire (even if some of the video is artificially distorted):
news89 468 Posted October 22, 2017 Author Posted October 22, 2017 To bump this up some WOAY has video on their Facebook page about new set coming soon.
TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted October 22, 2017 Posted October 22, 2017 To bump this up some WOAY has video on their Facebook page about new set coming soon. Their building looks small to house anything, let alone a news department. Also, it looks like the set will be much improved! At least for a market that small.

At least for a market that small. The building my station and news department is ran out of is smaller! It's not the size that counts!
TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 The building my station and news department is ran out of is smaller! It's not the size that counts! And which station is that? And why does it still say Copyright 2014 in your sig?

At least for a market that small. They actually seem to have demolished a large portion of the building. If you look at the aerial footage in that video and compare it to Google Streetview, there's a whole area left of the front door that's gone. Judging by the small trees growing on the roof I'd imagine that portion of the building wasn't seeing much use anyways... TV doesn't take up a lot of space anymore... You can fit two playback servers with 4 channels each in the amount of rack space two VTR units took up 20 years ago. A handful of reporters and salespeople don't take up a lot of room, either. They walk around the building a bit in this video from last year:
Big Country News 435 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 And which station is that? And why does it still say Copyright 2014 in your sig? I work at WMNN. (The signature year discrepancy can be chalked up to me forgetting to change it)
TheRolyPoly 2592 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 I work at WMNN. (The signature year discrepancy can be chalked up to me forgetting to change it) I don't mean to go off-topic, but I think I know you from somewhere.
LexTVandRadio 418 Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 To bump this up some WOAY has video on their Facebook page about new set coming soon. Did they drop the channel number from the logo?
news89 468 Posted November 13, 2017 Author Posted November 13, 2017 Bumping this thread up. WOAY just debuted the set, graphics for this market size it's a major upgrade front the the late 70s set and ok graphics. No word on music, I hope they drop Pinnacle by SAM. Edit: Per website new music was added. http://www.woay.tv/weve-remodeled-check-it-out-at-500-600-and-1100-pm/
tyrannical bastard 4033 Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Park Place Studio designed the set. I thought they went under last year? Must be a new incarnation of the old company.
MidwestTV 1244 Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 Well. It's better. Although it screams early 2000s.
news89 468 Posted November 19, 2017 Author Posted November 19, 2017 We now have video of WOAY, finally Pinnacle is out and Guardian is in.
Big Country News 435 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 We now have video of WOAY, finally Pinnacle is out and Guardian is in. Here's the graphics package they picked up: https://videohive.net/item/broadcast-design-complete-news-package-9/12909717?s_rank=5 Not a bad look or execution.
ChesapeakeTV 312 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 That's one of the better stock templates out there, but that voiceover almost sounds robotic...
CaptainNews 287 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 Are you kidding me? Out of all the packages on that website? This looks more professional and is cheaper: https://videohive.net/item/local-news-pack/11562758?s_rank=2
