Journalist 894
Canada Election 2K19 is upon us! Canada's federal election is tonight, Monday the 21st of October, and it appears to be the tightest in decades. Due to late-re surging popularity of the Bloc and the NDP from the leader's debate a few weeks ago, all polls are determining a minority government between the Liberals and the Conservatives. It's being speculated that that the winner of the plurality could be decided by mere percentage points, so the election might go as long as 3 am eastern the next day. In the meantime: election coverage! On television: CBC/SRC and CTV is planning election coverage beginning at 7 PM ET. Global's going live at 10 ET and Citytv will provide election break-ins throughout the evening, presumably to cash in those sweet sweet American simsub bucks. Global: CBC: SRC: CTV: Citytv: Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/17374-the-2019-canadian-federal-election/ Share on other sites
skbl17 188
C-SPAN2 will also be simulcasting CBC's coverage starting at 9pm (EST). Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/17374-the-2019-canadian-federal-election/#findComment-234427 Share on other sites
AaronQ 282
CBC and CTV called for Liberal government. Edit: It'll be a minority Liberal government. Viper550 291
Looks like the graphics are staying the same but they're transitioning them to the new CTV imaging font they've been using since last year. Plus the L3s from the local update have also been using that font too. Guess we're not getting new news graphics any time soon. Global has some interesting flat graphics, perhaps they may make their way to newscasts? On CBC, that one empty chair was reserved for the one and only Peter Mansbridge, who joined in after polls in most of Canada closed; CTV brought in Lloyd Robertson, though I thought their desk resembled a corporate boardroom. Once again, advantage: CBC. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/17374-the-2019-canadian-federal-election/#findComment-234455 Share on other sites

Once again, advantage: CBC. CTV used the CFTO Toronto studio again for this election. That desk is massive. I thought CBC and Global had more interesting presentation this year. Also, interesting that every single CBC/CTV/Global station carried regional tickers showing local/regional results, rather than scrolling through all 322 ridings (Global promoted this but CTV/CBC didn't). abric 181
How long has it been Global actually used a real set and not a virtual one? Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/17374-the-2019-canadian-federal-election/#findComment-234572 Share on other sites

For the Federal Elections, Global used the old Bloor Street studios (non-virtual) in the last election, and the ET CANADA set before that. For local news, all the local sets except Montreal feature real interview sets. The news desk is usually in the other half of the studio that is virtual. CKWS and CHEX’s sets are completely real for now. The virtual sets that we see today were rolled out back in 2008 in the smaller markets, and 2010 at BC/Calgary/Edmonton/Toronto. For Global National, I think they stopped using real sets in 2008 when the network moved the studio to Ottawa for a couple of years.
