Mirthala Salinas Suspended 2 Months, no Pay

Hmmm.

There are reports that 4 others were disciplined.

The mere fact that this was reported on the Noticiero Telemundo national edition (dunno if it was the 6.30 or the late news) makes me believe this is the end of her career.

She is as good as gone from Telemundo 52. The fact of the matter is that she made a mistake by dating the mayor of L.A. and therefore her credibility is no longer good. I cannot see how she will come back after she violated journalism's code of ethics. She deserves this punishment, she knew what she was getting into. She failed to report her affair with the mayor to her bosses at KVEA-TV. This will teach her a lesson, that her job is to report the news NOT become the news.

This is outrageous >:) This woman must be fired!!! The integrity of Telemundo 52 and NBC4 is down the toilet. When Amy Jacobson was fired by Larry Wert the President of WMAQ(NBC 5) he recognized ethical dilemma he was in and took action. Here in LA Linda Sullivan became derelict in her duty and I stand by my comments there needs a wholesale wipeout in management on Alameda St. Because by all rights Amy Jacobson can and should sue for bias and point out the discrepancy between her and Mirthala Salinas. Maybe Channel 4 should hire Larry Wert or Phyllis Schwartz from NBC 7/39 as you can see the management cant or wont do their job. Disgracefull and morally bankrupt. >:(

KVEA's General Manager is going to be "reassigned".

KVEA's sister station KNBC ran this is the top story on the Channel 4 News at 11. Even had an AM 640 KFI discussion on it. IMHO, a hot story but not the top story vs. the bridge tragedy in Minneapolis which was the second story on KNBC.

She should have been fired along with the general manager and probably others at Telemundo.

Page 1 on the Los Angeles Times today (below the fold).

They are taking a poll online if she should be suspended or fired. At the time of this writing, it was over 63% in favor of firing.

Reader comments, also.

She's going to be gone...she must...NBCUni cannot screw this up, despite all of its screwups, besides didn't WMAQ just fire a news lady who went by the last name Jacobsen??? no relation to Walter.

The suspensions are a farce. KFI's John & Ken reported this afternoon the KVEA news director was at work today.

NBC Universal is trying to get a billion dollar project approved on the Universal Studios lot. Studio expanision, a new hotel, residences and Universal CityWalk expanision. The mayor's support is crucial as many in the Universal City area don't want this. Do you really think they'll fire her? Too political for NBC Universal at this time.

Also, today, another controversy errupted at the Mayor's press conference at the Port of Los Angeles. His people would not allow reporters access to him before or after the press conference (at which he refused to take questions and just read a prepared statement that was previously released last night). That isn't normal. Los Angeles Port Police actually lined up to block off access to him (from the reporters). At one point his people said they could talk to him as he was getting in his SUV. They ran over and a reporter from TV Azteca (KAZA Channel 54) was man-handled by a Police supervisor and pushed into huge container. You can see the video of this on http://www.johnandken.com scroll down about one story on the homepage (today, 8/3).

If anyone still cares:

http://www.laobserved.com/archive/2007/09/mirthalas_new_assignment.php

Mirthala's new assignment

Kevin Roderick

If Mirthala Salinas stays with Telemundo Channel 52 it will be as the station's general assignment news chaser in the Inland Empire, not as the star political reporter and sometime anchor she was before her affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa became public. The staff in Burbank was told of the reassignment today.

Telemundo executives want to send Salinas to the Inland Empire office to avoid any further conflict of interest for her and the station, the sources said. Both Salinas and her supervisors came under intense criticism after it was revealed that she had covered Villaraigosa as a political reporter while they dated....

Station executives also were concerned about shielding Salinas from lingering animosity toward her in the newsrooms of KVEA and its sister station, KNBC Channel 4, which share the same Burbank facility.

Salinas, due to return from her two months suspension next Monday, was reportedly mulling whether to accept the demotion.

Los Angeles television newscaster Mirthala Salinas, whose affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa prompted her transfer to Riverside, failed to show up for her first day of work today after a two-month suspension. A few hours later, Salinas' employer, the Spanish-language Telemundo network, announced that she would not be returning.

Salinas and Telemundo executives were negotiating an end to her employment as a network spokesman, Alfredo Richard, said: "She will not be coming back."

NBC4 reported this on their 6pm newscast.
